I honestly want this more than any currently announced game. 40k has the best lore ever...

I don't like games based on pre-existing IP's that the developers don't own the creative rights to.

It creates a huge clash between what the players with no interest in WHM40k itself and the serious Warhammer lore buffs.

Developers can't add a certain gun/alliance/race/vehicle/boss/skill into the game because it clashes with the lore and the game suffers, or they do it anyway and lose the interest of the 40k fans by not being faithful to the source material. Either way, both parties suffer, and it can cause the game's player base to falter. It really constricts the developer's ability to make unique and interesting classes while maintaining balance. The result being that classes are almost direct mirrors of their opposing faction counterparts.

It's precisely what happened with WAR.

Between this hoping for 1 million and SWTOR hoping for 2 million, MMO's are clearly getting bigger and bigger production budgets. Whether or not they wish to directly compete with WoW is irrelevant, if they don't offer more content, balance, diversity and enjoyment for the subscription fee in comparison to big MMO machine then they won't reach their numbers. It's a big ask against a game with 6 years of post release development behind it.

THQ is Games-Workshop sole developer. They work hand in hand. That's why WH and 40k games tie in so well with the story.

My point being that if Blizzard wants to add something to WoW but it doesn't quite fit the lore, they can simply bend the lore or add an exception as they see fit, the quality of the gameplay never has to be sacrificed to pre-existing restrictions.

While THQ are the sole developers of 40k games and they have a tried and tested partnership with Games Workshop (Dawn of War II is a superb lesson in how RTS games should play) it doesn't mean there won't be creative clashes. An MMO, which has such an enormous amount of content in comparison to other genre's, will exacerbate these disputes, and they will certainly have a greater impact in their outcome than they would in an RTS or a regular FPS with a multiplayer component.

I've noticed when it comes to WH40k and THQ GW is pretty open to their ideas.

At least it'll be a change. I'm sick of MMOs being only medieval-themed..

There's adifference in WH Fantasy and WH40k Orks.

For instance, WH40k Orks are amazing!

Also, WH Fantasy MMO is made by Mythic. This one will be made by Relic.

"The Warhammer 40K MMO is in development at THQ's Austin studio, Vigil"
Relic does not develop MMOs, the new WH40K game they are making is a action game like God of War/Devil May Cry called Space Marines for consoles only.

Ultramarines have been the cover-boys for the Space Marines since the 1980's. I wasn't aware this was the case, though, and they could have just opened it up to all the chapters with the an editor like they use in Dawn of War. I need to do some research on this game, I wasn't aware there was so much info available.

Why is THQ talking about this before they've even come close to finishing that Space Marine game they've been teasing?

Maybe this is close to being finished?
I don't really care for the Space MArines, I prefer Orks, Eldar, and Tau, but I still plan to pick that game up.

Because THQ has several studios that develop for them and so they can make several games at once?

WH40K MMO = Vigil
Space Marine = Relic

I hope that the Tau are included, they were a lot of fun in the first Dawn of War.

Even though I just started getting into Warhammer40k, THQ craft some great games, and I'm glad they're not trying to be WoW for a change.

Oh man, if you start up the WH40k table top game (it's a bit pricey, but you can make your own units and they count as legal units) it's way better then the games.
