Just curious, is 200 people a lot for one project?

200 is a lot but it also depends on how many people are working in what areas.

It's a lot when those are just the people who fetch dry cleaning and coffee!

I really want to know what this new IP is all about. All the buzz words and hype they are brewing is making me antsy.

This whole deal makes me depressed. Why couldn't Bungie have gone with EA!? Bungie, whatever you do don't let Activision ruin you. PLEASE!!!!!

Well they don't have to worry about that since Bungie made sure they don't end up like IW by staying an independent company and keeping the rights to their ip.

Well yeah, but Activision has the sole publishing rights. You seriously think the person cashing the checks isn't going to have a huge say in the game? The power is where the money is, and the money is coming from Activision. They can be "independant" all they want, as soon as Activision wants something they don't like, it's too bad, since they can just pull funding.

Bungie will regret it when Activision will be holding on their royalties for 10 years.

also, people need to realize that Activision is publishing the games, not taking ahold of their IPs. This is a good PR move on Activisions part...not getting directly involved with development and letting Bungie just do their thing.

They're also funding the games. Its silly to think Activision wont try to pressure Bungie on what they're making, because obviously they want to assure they'll make a return on it.

How does Bungie think it can remain independent or keep its IPs when other companies are funding its projects? As soon as you start letting another company pay the costs for developing that game you start to find out that they are the ones in control.

Because part of the contract means that Bungie has full control over its IP, meaning Activision, apart from funding and publishing, can't do shit with whatever game Bungie decides to make.

They couldn't afford to fund their own game. At the end of the day, someone was going to be footing the bill. They could have gone the Hollywood route and tried to secure individual bankrollers for their next project, but I'm not sure I've ever heard of that happening for games.

The model they are talking about is incredible for them. Usually a publisher would pay some of the costs to create the game, but they'd own the IP. Under Bungie's deal, they would retain the IP, which is obviously preferable to the Call of Duty situation, where Activision will have a death grip on the franchise forever. Under this plan, no one can create games within their universe unless they license out the brand (which could happen, but it's rather doubtful).

What I'm wondering is if Bungie could get tired of Activision in a few years, and decide not to make any more games in whatever franchise they're creating. That would be excellent leverage against Activision trying to exert any control over the studio. We'll see how this whole thing shakes out.

Bungie being bought by Activision worries me for several reasons, but there is one thing I can see being a positive outcome: licensing the Halo engine for 3rd party use. I would rather make a game that looks and feels like Halo than use CryEngine or UDK, personally.

I don't think Microsoft would retain the rights to the engine the IP was developed for unless specifically stated

With 200 people working on the Bungie project...it's a MMO folks...there's no way it is not...you wouldn't need those many people...this console's generation is too far along for the project to have that many people on the payroll, this early in the development cycle.
