Fan project Star Trek Adventures: Year One has the unusual distinction of being doubly retro. Not only does it meticulously recreate the nearly 45-year-old Star Trek series, it's also got an uncanny resemblance to an early '90s adventure game (think Quest for Glory or, indeed, Interplay's Star Trek 25th Anniversary). The act of playing forces one to simultaneously pine for two bygone eras, the effect of which is not unlike watching Fruit Brute playing with a Teddy Ruxpin.
If you're unsure whether or not you can handle that level of nostalgia, there's a demo for the game on the project's official homepage.

Taren, I've tried Klingon bloodwine, up at StarFest a couple weekends back, it just about did me in. Still not something I regret. This game looks like fun, makes me wish i played video games.

I never really get "Adventure Games are Dead" talk anymore. The genre is doing pretty well again, and is doing much better than Western RPGs in terms of releases and game quality.

Anyone else remember the canceled Interplay / D.C. Fontana Star Trek game "The Secret of Vulcan Fury" that was slated to come after the "25th Anniversary" and "Judgment Rites" games? I still remember watching the trailer on my 486 and nearly dying of joy. I was so pissed when the game was shelved.
This project could in no way measure up to that, but I downloaded the demo anyway. "25th" and "Judgment" were two of the best Trek games ever made.

I don't know about the others, but God I loved Judgement rites. I played that so many times. (I think I had to install it in dos). Good times.

Hey guys,
I'm Andrew Smith - official team member of the Star Trek Adventures project. Funny you should mention that Chief Oddball, because our team has an idea for creating our own version of "The Secret of Vulcan Fury". Ideas for this project at this time are just that - ideas. But we will let you know more as it becomes more of a reality.
Thanks for the support.

I really enjoyed 25th anniversary as a kid. Scoring 100% on a mission was one thing, but finding all the ways you could kill your security officers and/or innocent bystanders was the best.

Yay for being old enough to remember Fruit Brute and Yummy Mummy!

Red shirt's gonna die. Oh well. He will be remembered with the rest of his security brethren as being brave enough to sacrifice himself for the Captain, CMO, and First-Officer who really shouldn't be going to the planet surface when it is already known that when command officers beam down, instant-death for any other non-command officers is imminent.
I really want to play this now.
