Good point. It might be less horrible to interact with if you have the ability to remap the controls.

So, there's a huge "if" there.

There is a small but respectful list of console games that allow full button remapping, Resistance for one.

There's no good reason why they can't code the ability in more games. It's just that players don't demand it since the controllers themselves are standardized. Somehow Bungie changing the Reach controls is a big deal. Only because they've never given us choice to begin with. An action either needs an analog input or a digital one. Why the hell does some tunnel vision developer get to dictate if I melee with B or R3? I don't give a damn about your focus testing. How about you give a damn about my muscle memory? What if I'm actually missing a finger?

The 360 started out with an idea of persistent controller setups, but never really followed through. Why aren't my controller preferences down to the button, instead of just whether I like my flight stick inverted or not? Does anyone even remember that those preferences are kept on our profiles? Maybe next go-round.

Have to say I wasn't feeling it. Both singleplayer and multiplayer demos were deleted after roughly 10 minutes for me. Don't like the physics or the environments and there was nothing to make me want to pay to play this.

If only the grappling hook were as useful and fun as the one in Just Cause 2. Never had more fun grappling around than in that game.

Solar, well said. I'm not a game designer and I don't have much programming experience (two C++ courses in high school don't make me an expert), but if designers are able to produce mind-numbing graphics and gameplay experiences, why the hell can't they add in button mapping? Most games even have a controller menu that tells you what every button does, so is it really that hard to throw in some button mapping so gamers are more likely to sit down with a game for longer periods of time, rather than throw it away in disgust only because the buttons were configured poorly?

Most of the time I don't have a problem adapting to new controls. I play FPS's, racing games, TPS's, and Peggle all the time so I'm constantly having to adjust to new control schemes associated with different genres. However, there have been a few games I have returned/burned due to my inability to learn the controls and wrap my fingers around the controller in awkward positions. It's unfortunate that a potentially good game is rendered unplayable because you can't figure out how to move your character.

Wait..so you're saying the game is too hard? If that's what you're saying maybe you should change the difficulty to the easiest setting. I'm sick of these reviewers giving any game that they can't breeze through in a couple of hours a low rating. If you don't like the controls then too bad. If you don't like getting knocked down maybe you're not prepared to be challenged in a video game. Look back at games like resident evil. They were very difficult, and Im glad capcom isn't giving into the casual gamer. Yea that's you halo/gears/gta. Just bc a game has violence in it doesn't mean it's hardcore

That was the biggest thing I loved about The Conduit, every single facet of that game could be customized to your liking. It was definitely a big move in the right direction, and I don't understand why we aren't seeing it happen more often by now.

I put about 4 hours into the co-op tonight. It's actually crazy good. Found a control scheme that clicked for me, and haven't had any trouble at all. I didn't check out the upgrades, so I'm not sure if I'll like the slot machine thing. The game is already awesome without them, though. The graphics are amazing, and I didn't come across any framerate drops.

I went in with incredibly low expectations, but so far Lost Planet 2 has blown me away. All the word-of-mouth I've seen so far has been incredibly positive, as well. I'm very confused as to how it hasn't garnered higher scores.

Aye, a simplified control scheme would have been better. It's as if they tried to make use of every single button on the controller.

I still enjoyed the game nevertheless. Pity about it's short comings though, this game could have been sooo much more fun!

Lost Planet 1 is still one of the most anger inducing games I have played. I think I stopped playing after Green Eye whooped my ass 100 times. I almost threw the controller through the tv...so if the 2nd one is frustrating I think I have to skip it. For my sanity.

My apologies, I should have phrased it as:

"Lukewarm reviews from the sources that hold the most weight for me."

Which are 6/10 from Playstation the Official Magazine, 6/10 from Eurogamer, and of course, this review here from Griffin.

ROFL @ Markez's comments. I have to agree...6/10 is by no means lukewarm to me, but I guess it all comes down to preference...to me, 6/10 (and even this Joystiq review) tell me that this game is by no means a genre-bending triumph, but a competent game nonetheless. That being said, I don't blame Ezio for waiting for a price drop. Depending on how Red Dead Redemption rates, it will decide which of these I pick up first, and which one I wait to get online at a greatly reduced price.

"Every single enemy has methods of interrupting your actions. While being shot, you lose your ability to shoot back, throw grenades, heal, or do pretty much anything but run away from the thing shooting you. On top of that, most enemies have a method of knocking you back -- either by blasting you with a shotgun, hitting you with an explosive device or swiping at you with a grotesque mandible.

Enemies will exercise their ability to knock you back with exasperating frequency. It's a minor annoyance during most of game's missions, but it completely ruins Lost Planet 2's massive, potentially awesome boss fights. You'll encounter more than a dozen towering, intricately designed bosses during the Campaign, but each fight plays out roughly the same: Find the best weapon, shoot the glowing weak point, get knocked back, heal, repeat steps two through four for twenty minutes."

this hear reminded me of fighting rogues as a caster in wow, when i used to play it... i don't think i'll ever play another game where i can be interrupted non stop to prevent me from doing anything.

other than that, im not sure about this review, it shouldn't include a PC tag, most of the problems you stated are due to control issues, and i expect that they will be better, or customizable on the PC.

Reminds me of one of my few frustrations from AC2: dropping smoke bombs was one of the few interuptable actions, yet that made the least sense in real life. If I'm getting pummelled because I'm stuck against a wall, I know damn well I'd figure out how to pop smoke to help me get away.

Considering the problems are gameplay decisions and have nothing to do with controls (if you've actually played LP1 or any of the LP2 demos you'd know this), the PC version won't be any different in this way.

The graphics might be the best of this generation so far though.

After playing the first, this is exactly what I feared we'd get from the sequel. Most of Capcom's games suffer from this same issue - the controls and design choices are too archaic and complex. This is not a cry for more 'casual' games, so don't get me wrong there. It's more that if I haven't played Lost Planet in two weeks, I have NO IDEA how to control it due to how unintuitive the game is. Something about that makes the game less fun. It punishes the player. Dead Rising and Resident Evil games kind of suffer from the same thing - weird design choices that hinder an otherwise great looking and seemingly well thought out game.

Such a disappointment. Like Griffin said - Giant monsters and mech suits. How do you mess that up?

I want to enjoy the first LP so much, because on paper it sounds awesome- And then every time I pop it in I get frustrated and turn it off 10 minutes later. I had hoped the new one would be put together a little better. Doesn't sound like it is.

The only reason I played Borderlands as much as I did was because it controlled like CoD4. Not because it wasn't a great game (it was), but because with all the games coming out at such a breakneck pace it's just getting to be too much to remember 6+ control schemes in similar playing titles. If GRAW2 controlled like Gears I would have played it....

It makes sense. You know 4 bazillion people already know how to control Gears, so if you game has all the same functions, why not at least have an option to make your game control that way?

It's hard to imagine the controls being worse than the first one. I loved the demo. Going to give this a shot as I loved the "Oh ****!!!" when you saw some crazy beast pop out of the snow in the first.

Ok, almost all of these complaints are things that are apparent in the first game, and I loved the first game. The snowy landscape was sort of a breath of fresh air from the typical brown environments of most shooters, but I can't fault the sequel for changing that aspect. Getting knocked down by enemies was in te first game, an it didn't bother me. Moving around isn't cumbersome in the slightest if you're a minimally capable gamer; it's just slow, so if it bothers you that much, I think it's more of an ADD issue. The controls are responsive.

Perhaps these aspects are just more exaggerated in the sequel. I know I'm in the minority, in that I loved the first game. I'd be playing the second by myself or with online teammates though, and because of that, I'm much less a fan of co-op than most, so I'm less excited by this title.

Well, like I said, I can't comment on some of the negative aspects of the review. Bad co-op AI is one thing that I can't stand. It's really the complaints that carried over from the first game that I was trying to counter.

The demo for the sequel didn't have me as excited to play it as the idea of going back and playing the first again. The boss battles in the frst game were awesome.

I liked the first game. I didn't love it because the story was so nonsensical, imo.

I didn't mind the controls either; like you said it doesn't take long to get used to.

Multiplayer in the first one was fun too.

With all that said, I played the LP2 demo for about three deaths and shut it off in disgust. The boss battle was boring, dull, stupid, frustrating, etc. I had no problems with the controls, just the lack of fun of in the boss battle itself.

Mal, I agree and disagree. I felt the same way when I initially tried the demo. I recently re-downloaded it and retried it, and I enjoyed it more the second time around. I still don't think it will be as good as the first though.

Also, the story from the first game was cheesy as hell, but I kinda liked it. Sometimes a little cheese doesn't hurt. It was good enough to make the encounter with the Green Eye memorable, but not good enough that I don't even remember who you fought at the end of the game.
