It charted #1 in the NPD for Xbox 360.

Anyways, BioShock 2 is fantastic. The story is great, but different from the original. Rapture is still atmospheric and beautiful. And the gameplay was improved. Also, the multiplayer was actually kinda good (SHOCKER!).

Convince fans of the original that they needed a sequel? I'm not even sure I comprehend this sentiment.

Are they not aware that most top sellers are sequels, many of which are sequels of games that don't necessarily cry out for sequels? People love more of the same thing, when the original was good. It's like...more pie.

The "pie" in Bioshock was the story and how it unfolded. And any of the endings you'd get basically ended said "pie" for good. I'm not sayingt that Bioshock didn't offer anything but the story, but still the story was the best part of it. That's where the problem for the dev team was.

I liked Bioshock and didnt want a sequel. Its not a sequel kind of game, Rapture is not changeable or very expandable and its the entire point of Bioshock, you cant have Bioshock without Rapture. Imagine all the Resident Evil's taking place in the same mansion from the first game, that would get old. Other games can do sequels because they arent limited to the same locale.

I'll never play Bioshock 2 because I got enough of Rapture in the first game, Im just not interested in more.

I can understand the finality of the story, but a "2" installment could be a prequel, or some other connection. I'm just saying they had a hot property. A sequel is not a surprise nor does it seem like a monumental achievement to come up with some engaging narrative string to tie it together.

To me it seems this game came and went very quitely...I seem to remember the blog coverage on 1 being constant but this has, to me, slipped under the radar.

The best marketing tool would have been to make Bioshock 2 as good as or better than 1. Instead, they dumped level design, story telling, and innovation. Seriously, if you are going to use the same engine, most of the same art assets, and mostly the same game systems, I expect a game that is polished as hell and twice as engaging. Not a slapped together, totally linear shooter with a nonsense story.

It was a great game. The story was emotional, more personal, but still introduced you to the world of religion and politics in present day Rapture. You're just spouting stuff that haters spout. People who haven't played it. The first one had problems, ya know. It was a masterpiece, but the combat was drastically improved in BioShock 2. Give some damn credit, my friend.

i agree with you. those other two can act like everyone who doesn't love this game is a hater. but frankly- this game is just not interesting. the story is weak, the mystery is non-existent, the locations are all too familiar and while gameplay may have been smoothed out, it's not like it was broken in the first game.
the multiplayer is not a draw either, since i will never touch it. that doesn't make this a bad game- it just doesn't make it a game that matters to me.

Bioshock 2 was a fantastic game and a perfect sequel. If for some reason you have not yet played it, I'd strongly encourage you to go out and buy it, now. Of course, I'd recommend you play the first Bioshock before this one. I'm sure you could play this without any pre-existing knowledge of Bioshock, but you'll miss a whole layer of depth in the story if you didn't play the first Bioshock.

I'd also recommend giving the Multiplayer a go. It really feels like first person shooters of yester-year (with some obvious enhancements like Plasmids). But if you liked the classic run and gun gameplay from older multiplayer games like Doom, Quake 2, etc - I think you'll like this.

My only disappointment is the post-release support. Their first DLC pack was an unnessicary cash-grab ($5 for content ALREADY ON THE DISC!). Their next DLC pack will probably go largely unnoticed considering the cost and the dwindling number of gamers still playing Bioshock 2 online. If anything, they should be releasing the pack for free to help encourage sales and growth, and not try another cash grab.

I agree. I wasn't sold on the idea of a Bioshock sequel, but I wound up buying it new, and while the gameplay didn't seem much different, the story pulled me in and definitely had its share of twists. I've still got to replay it and harvest the little sisters for some point achievements.

I'm not a big multiplayer fan, and I tried it a few times. I can see how some people would dig it, it did have its own unique feel.

I was hoping for some dlc that was more in the lines of expanding the single player experience, although I'm not sure how they would incorporate that into the story. All in all I'm glad I jumped in and gave it a chance.

I think BioShock 2 was a great game. I enjoyed the first game more since it did a great job introducing you to this bizarre underwater society but the second one just threw you back in and let you play on. Which was still great, I did thoroughly enjoy the second game too.

Never tried the MP though.

I bought this at launch. Actually, I preordered it. The last game I bought at launch was Brawl (not worth it). Last game I preordered was Guitar Hero: Rock's The 80's (I don't even have to say not worth it). Bioshock 2 was awesome. I bought it based on the best kind of advertising a company can have - positive hype and good reviews.

And now I probably won't launch purchase another game until Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Unless Bioshock 3 comes out first...

Bioshock 2 is ok, but it came and went with a wimper. It could never have the impact of the original. Even with all the changes made, it still felt like more Bioshock. Which was ok if you wanted that, but if you were looking for this great big leap of WOW from the sequel. You were disappointed.

Nobody looks for a "great leap" from sequels. Rarely does a "great leap" happen, but that doesn't mean the game isn't superb and didn't surpass expectations.

God of War 2, , God of War: Chains of Olympus, God of War 3 - Nearly identical to God of War 1.

Halo 2, Halo 3 - Nearly identical to Halo 1. The online multiplayer for Halo 2 was a big step up, however. But the single player was certainly ore of the same.

Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2 - The Episodes were more of the same. And they were freaking fantastic, especially Episode 2.

And you can say this about nearly every sequel. Gears of War, Call of Duty, etc.

Sure, sometimes a sequel is a good bit different in its structure or overall polish (Mass Effect 2 and Uncharted 2 come to mind), but that's rare. And even then, even when things are a lot different in many ways, both Mass Effect 2 and Uncharted 2 still feel like sequels to the originals and don't really innovate in any meaningful way. That's fine. They're AAA masterpieces. And so is BioShock 2.

That's my 2 cents.

Assassin's Creed II and GOW II took the game to the next level. They got better reviews than their prequels. They're beloved. Bioshock 2 is a mediocre at best. It's already forgotten.
