Cryptic Studios and Atari are taking a two-fold approach to increasing the player base for their spacefaring MMO, Star Trek Online: First, potential subscribers can now download the game and play through the tutorial and first mission for free. Though they'll have an unlimited amount of time to tool around in their Federation vessel, players will have to purchase the full game to gain access to STO's other offerings.
In addition, former subscribers can play for free this weekend, and check out the new content that's been added as part of the game's first "Season" of updates. The "Welcome Back Weekend" ends Monday at 10 a.m. PST, so we suggest applicable parties should hop online ASAP, so as not to waste any potential Trekking time.

You know that's essentially resembling the whole idea behind Tortoga in AoC during the beginning right? Using the best-designed/most interesting part they can at the beginning of the character's life to try and rope in your subscription. Least that is the vibe I get from that statement.
One thing I'm really surprise is that Massively hasn't mentioned the current scandal, where if you trick five friends into buying the game and paying for a month, you get a free end-game ship, the Galaxy X.

They really just need to make it free, they have the microtransactions in place and with all the bad press so few will play it. I think it's worthy for a free game, but I'm upset I wasted 80 bucks on the CE.

Who plays games seriously on Macs anyway? Macs are a bloated commercialized joke, I think its people who dont know different but want to seem trendy that buy Jobs' proprietary bullshit. When did Macs even start comparing to PCs? When they decided to let PC components into Macs, Intel anyone?

I heard the game sucks. I downloaded the free trial, it does suck.
Period.
Graphics are horrific. Star Trek Bridge Commander, from 10~ years ago, has far better GFX. The missions are boring and slow paced.
Avoid.

This game is about 8 years old.
Yet the graphics are pretty much the same as STO, if not better tbfh.

It always amuses me that whenever a game does something like this, people crawly out of the woodwork to start smack talking the game. I enjoy STO quite a bit as do all the people in both my fleets.
With so many options for your gaming time available now, companies have to do *something* to draw in people to check them out. The unlimited trial idea is a good one in my opinion. You get to check the game out on your time without any any real pressure, and you can get a taste of what all the different character types can do. I fail to see how this equates to 'the game is dying'.

How is it that you equate the fact that you enjoy a game as somehow proof that the game is good. Enjoyment is subjective, and doesn't hinge on quality.
One man's trash is another man's treasure.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it in the beta, up until the flaws in it became too glaring.
I enjoy UO, which might even have less subs than STO, and is so old as to barely get a reputation in the modern media.
Also, how is it that you completely miss the point people are making?
It's not the unlimited trial, because that's somewhat sensible.
It's the "Welcome Back Week", three months after the launch. At this stage, you're not supposed to be trying to bribe former subscribers back, unles the subscription churn post-launch was less-than-ideal.
Trying to draw former subscribers back after only three months could easily be interpreted as a desperate move, from a company that lost too many of its initial subscribers.

And the downfall of Star Trek Online begins.
Not exactly rocket science, but I predicted that STO would last no more than a year. I'm sure most other gamers out there predicted a similar outcome if they too played that horrendous beta. Considering I haven't heard anything positive about the game since the beta, I think it's safe to assume nothings changed.
Cryptic, you had an opportunity for a huge success and you blew it. You could have contributed to the re-invigoration of the Star Trek franchise (following the success of the pretty good movie!), but you only contributed to the various "worst games ever" lists of the world.
In a perfect world, Cryptic would be sent to the crypt.
