Backbreaker continues to promise a little innovation in the football genre, even as it tries to take on the mighty Madden juggernaut. In this new Training Camp video, you can check out the running game and how it works. In theory, it sounds great -- just use the right stick in an intuitive way to bump, stiff arm, and hurdle your opponents in the constant drive towards the end zone. In practice, though, it's tough to see how well the game will determine the gestures, like comparing a simple hurdle (pushing the right stick up quickly) versus an all-out leap (pushing the right stick up for a while).
Still, even though Backbreaker is starting out deep in its own territory against the long-lived, well-funded and officially-licensed Madden series, if there's anywhere a plucky young underdog with a big, physics-based heart can win, it's in the sports genre. The game will set, hut, hike on June 1 for a discount price of $49.99.

Great video, even though it was on GT.com 4 days ago!
Game looks fun but if the right stick is controlling the players actions, whats controlling the camera! If its the computer and I end up getting side swiped from my peripherals, Id be pretty upset.

Or, you know, 10+ years if you consider it all just one evolving project. It's not like they fix half of the bugs in the game anyhow, so it's really just like a bunch of milestones as opposed to full releases.
They should stop remaking the art every year, maybe.

This game doesn't look bad at all. I'm tired of the madden series and it would be awesome if they were to over throw madden. All you need is fun gameplay and solid DLC and as far as I can tell they got the controls down pretty good, it seems. I wonder if this game is going straight to that price?

at least it won't require an online activation code.

Visual Concepts made the Madden team work. Nothing like competition to light the fire! And I'm all for some arcade action.

this looks fantastic, and I'm a british sports hater. The physics look great, and the right stick controls kinda remind me of Skate's flickit system. I am greatly looking forward to this.

you guys can't be serious in thinking this game will do anything to Madden sales. it'll do just about as much as All Pro did for 2K. nothing. people (the majority anyway) aren't interested in playing a fake football game in which you have to create characters, colors and teams.
euphoria engine or not. and proper physics? lol ok. i hope it does well but i'm not going to fool myself into thinking this game has any chance especially at $50. $30 or $40 maybe but not $50.
it's a very very long uphill battle for any football game that doesn't have the NFL behind it. that's just the reality of it.

i'm not naive enough to believe that is actually going to sell all that many copies, the best we can hope for is that it sells enough copies to get EA's attention to the point that they make wholesale changes to the tired as hell madden engine. Buuut that probably won't happen either. as long as there continues to be an army of Madden sheep happily buying the same game every year with almost no real changes, and since EA bought their way out of competion a few years ago...we're screwed. well not really. i'm still playing all pro football 2k8, which is awesome...but you get my point.

Perhaps if this does well enough, EA will just buyout the rights and integrate Backbreaker's advances into Madden 12.

There's no slide option for QBs? Ouch.
Anyways, I love the physics engine. I might check this game out just because of it.

Backbreaker seems to be a football game featuring men, not little boys, so it makes sense that the slide feature might be missing.

wow so many games for systems i dont have righ now. as of right now there are about 6 games i want for the ps3, and i dont even have a ps3. backbreakers, (if its a ps3 title) of course, but im so sick of madden, i lost interest in it around 03. i was so hyped to get madden 01 for the ps2, THAT was a nice madden, seeing the huge difference between madden on ps1 and ps2. but im so sick of the same thing over and over and over, who cares about a license anymore. remember blades of steel? tecmo bowl? mutant league hockey/football? mega man soccer? see my point, no license, and you all played those games, and loved them. when a kart racing game comes out like atv off road, or mario kart, no one screams a cry baby scream about those games not having kawasaki racing licenses, so why on football? mario strikers, baseball, soccer, toadstool cup, etc, no one cares about a license for those games, why? because they are intuitive, fun, addictive, and enjoyable. do i care in backbreakers if i have a reciever named randy moses? or joe throwback? jason rice? (im sure you can tell who they are supposed to be). no, u know why? because mutant league football and hockey both had bones jackson, and NO ONE, not ONE DAMNED PERSON i ever came across who played those games were like, "man theyre ripping off bo jackson", ui know why? becuae you all were like, holy crap, tahts supposed to be bo jackson! hes a bad-assed skeleton whos going to shoulder rock your head off and bribe the ref, thats why. pull your heads out of your asses, have fun and enjoy yourself.
