'Dragon Ball drought' to end, fans get much-needed sequel
68
"Will there ever be new Dragon Ball games?," you begged. "Will they be sequels?," you cried. Namco Bandai has heard your pleas, Dragon Ball fans. There will be more Dragon Ball games after all! One of them is even a sequel.
Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 is set to fill that Goku-shaped void in your PS3 or Xbox 360 with 20 more characters than the first Raging Blast. That and a "new Raging Soul System which enables characters to reach a special state, increasing their combat abilities to the ultimate level." Yes, they can power up.
Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team is a fighting game for PSP featuring four-player simultaneous Ad Hoc battles. Both are due "this fall." Hang in there!

With the name Son Gokou he might know it was over 8000, but I think someone simply called Goku can be forgiven for using the most popular meme of it as opposed to a litteral translation :)

AMERICAN Goku speaks ENGLISH like all real AMERICANS. And AMERICANS are tougher than everyone else so obviously we have a higher power level.

At least he knew it was from DBZ at all.. I've seen the reference extend far beyond the bounds of DBZ\anime awareness. Those 4chan hipsters..
On topic, has there ever been a truly great DragonBall game? I loved the series as a kid and tried out more than a few games, mostly to disappointment (though I remember having some fun on the SNES).. I guess I lost interest after a while, it's been years since I watched or played anything DB.
If there was a snappy, flexible, challenging, fast-paced DBZ game that could hold its own against the best Capcom fighters and facilitated some epic multi-power-level battles between key characters.. I'd be tempted to check it out.

But did we mistranslate it? Or did the Japanese first record what Nappa was saying incorrectly? What WAS Goku's power level? What if it was over a million already at that time, but it's just been lost through mistranslations and mythology?
Will we ever know?
Also @ Foetoid.
Stop being an elitist jerk. Who cares if it's a mistranslation, the meme is IT"S OVER 9000!??!. Most memes aren't exactly based on accuracy and finding the truth you know.

Anyone complaining about DBZ mistranslations at this point is so far gone that it's not even worth it. Funimation did not translate DBZ word for word; they pretty much wrote in whatever they wanted, making pointless switches for no reason at all. As an example, there is a scene on Namek where Vegeta gives Gohan and Krillin some Saiyan armor. In the original Japanese, he gives them the "older" model. In the English version, he gives them the "newer" model. Why? God knows. Funimation thought it was more fun that way?*
Having said that, the original Japanese voice track for DBZ is awful. Five minutes of listening to it and I'm ready for a lobotomy.
Oh, and Dragonball GT Final Bout for the Playstation 1 rocked my socks when I was a kid. It probably doesn't stand up to scrutiny today, but it was great in the late 90's/early 2000's.
(* disclaimer, my memory of the situation may be bolloxed because I haven't seen the show in years. Facts presented may be bullshit.)

despite it's horrible online (being the first online DBZ game, it was expected), the Wii version of Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is better, as it not only has the classic and gamecube controller option for people that prefer traditional controls (though I like to actually make kamehameha motions myself) it also has extra characters and is technically superior (sharper graphics and textures than the PS2 version).

@edweird, I'm going to have to agree with @Foetoid. Budokai 3 is exactly what you're looking for. It still is, and likely will always remain, the best Dragonball Z game there is.

Being one of the few Tenkaichi/RB fans around, it's great to hear they're making a new RB, rather than just another random game with another absurd title.
(And thankfully they realized what a huge mistake Burst Limit was.)

Wait, why was Burst Limit a mistake? That's the last DBZ game I was excited for because they got rid of the shitty free-roam. I still haven't bought it, though.

^ I gotta agree with that one. I personally really liked the return to the old 2D fighter formula that burst limit was going for. It wasn't that great but it was enough for me to really want a sequel because I just KNEW they would get it right, or at least give me a super HD remix of the older Budokai games. In Budokai 3, there's a great portion of the story mode that involves you flying around basically a big google map version of the dragonball world, and I thought that was pretty cool but I don't really think it belonged in a 2D fighter (The MMO, however I am still excited for.) but it wasn't too in my face to the point where it ruined the game for me. But then the Budokai tenkaihooziwhatsit bonanzas started comming out and that was that for me. And when the first Raging Boner came out, I thought it was a sequel to burst limit...I cried so heavilly knowing that a Burst Limit sequel is probably never going to be in the mix.
I suppose this post doesn't really have a point, does it? Ah well. Just my opinion on the matter.

@Traceur
Top 5 reasons why Burst Limit was an awful mistake:
5. Recycled animations (every character was copied and pasted to the same animations for the "cinematic" sequence in the fight, which wore thing.
4. It actually had 1 less character than the original Budokai, and despite it being a joke character, there's no excuse for having 1 less character when the game prior has 150 (Burst Limit has 22 characters).
3. Online mode was all the game had to offer, which was decent at best. They even took out the Tournament mode for some reason, which made no sense and therefore made the game much worse than the original Budokai. So a game released 6 years later after several sequels, was actually a step backwards
2. Presentation. The singleplayer campaign was way too short to do in slideshow progression. The HD cinematics were nice, but it would've been cool to have Dragonworld again.
1. You were forced to play through the single player to unlock EVERY character aside from Goku. So if you bought the game to play with your friends, it would have to be Goku vs Goku until someone runs through the singleplayer slideshow adventure..

no offense to dbz fans out there but they haven't changed anything form budokai 3 or tenkaichi 3 which are the best dbz games imo. They need a reboot fast. idk who keeps buying these games...

more than 2 fighters at a time? Finally! Probably won't be balanced, but as long as its a Raging Blast to play, I'm on board. But hopefully, the console versions get 4player support as well.

Just gotta say, the graphics for Raging Blast 2 look really good.
The last Dragonball Z game I played (and liked) was Budokai 3 for the PS2. Never liked the Tenkaichi series or any of the free-roaming ones.

Excuse my mistake but I agree that Budokai 3 was the last DBZ that truly did something for me. I fell into the Tenkaichi hype (probably because that's when I was younger and really got into the internet that year) and was surely dissapointed and the next two were basically the same thing with a ton more of useless characters. I did think Burst Limit was a step in the right direction and if it had a sequel it would've been amazing (and the inevitable sequel of that would've been better).

As someone who likes DB, I can say that the last great DBZ game was Legacy of Goku 2. The track record for these games has been terrible, and with good reason. They put out a DBZ game more often than Madden.

How can anyone like the old Budokai games? The Tenkaichi series' gameplay is much more true to how the actual anime plays out.
Budokai might be a more technical fighter, but it's slow and feels extremely dated. DBZ should be fast and absurd.
