I own a mac (and i love it) but i hate how ppl try to make it more than it is, a personal computer.

In something completely unrelated.... i'm tired of meeting Bronzers on the Winner's Path pokewalker route. I want a frakkin exploding munchlax or a bouncing magikarp dammit!!!

Yeah, I would join you guys. Just tried to get Steam on my Mac, and to my utter disappointment, Steam only supports Intel-based Macs. Valve, you guys are awesome, but way to crush my extreme anticipation.

PC stands for personal computer, so your Mac is still a pc.

You might define pc as a Windows-based computer, but your definition is wrong.

..."I'm a Mac, I'm a PC"

It depends on the context but you'd have to be blind to not notice many people use the term "PC" to reference Windows-based computers.

@Drak

don't play semantics. Everybody and their brother says "PC" when they are talking about a Windows machine.

Reuben, one could argue you're playing semantics, too. Whether or not how it's commonly used, PC just means "personal computer," and that's what Macs are. Mac, Windows, Linux... these are just operating systems... PC is the hardware.

@BPM

Of course that's what they are. This has gotten ridiculous. The majority of us use "PC" for Windows, so it's silly to stop and give someone a lesson who is using it like everyone else.

Who really cares? A mac is a mac, a pc is a pc, let's keep it that way.

"A Mac is a Mac, a PC is a PC"
An equivalent phrase would be "a square is a square, and a rectangle is a rectangle." Except for the fact that a square is a rectangle, and a Mac is PC. A square is a more specific subset of rectangle, and a Mac is a more specific subset of PCs.

People, please . . . We're missing the real issue. It's not about PC or Mac, Windows or Mac, Macs being PCs, etc . . .

What we should be concerned about here, is that our loving comrade Shadowbender has used the MACronymn.

And a pox on me for adding a non phonetic n to Acronym. God . . . as if the English language wasn't bad enough, I have to come here and sully it even more than I usually do.

Honestly, I didn't even realize that saying "PC" would make you react like that. I mean, I completely forgot that Apple and its fans like to pretend that their computers are not PCs. It never even entered my mind. Wow.

Well technically the term PC when used to describe windows machines comes from "IBM PC compatible", which is what all windows machines are, as well as most desktop/laptop Linux machines. Hardware wise, modern MACs are "IBM PC compatible" as well, but older ones (pre-intel) are not. That is why PC refers to Windows and Linux machines and Mac refers Apple computers. It's a little unfortunate that the bit used as the platform label (PC) also means Personal Computer though (that's even what it means in IBM PC, so really calling them IBMs would be more useful).

P.S. If you don't like calling it a PC, just call it a computer. You can't argue that it's one of those right? It really does annoy the crap outta me when people say "on my MAC" and the like. It's not something to be proud of - it's a computer. Don't be smug about liking a brand. Mac zealots are even worse than console fanboys (less cursing, but far more arrogance).

I would love to coral Joystiq users....

I have a healthy amount of games purchased through Steam and several games available on Steam for which I own the retail boxed copy. I'd be happy to help in any way I can. Work kicked my butt these last two months but I am back to gaming virtually full time.

I've been playing games since 1979 and have also set up and moderated forums for various guilds and compiled tons of technical support documents and FAQs which have proven useful in helping others to get their games working.

Most of all I am patient with people in 99% of cases. The other 1% is reserved for dealing with NCSoft or Gamestop employees.

By the way folks... I know IRC is suddenly all the rage again.. but there is a chat channel available for every group in Steam.

There are event scheduling tools, forums, statistics and all sorts of neat things in Steam. Take a look.

Especially if you are playing an older or not-so-popular game.. joining a group and getting involved in the chat channels is a great way to build a list of friends who also play that game. When everyone else was complaining about not being able to find games in AvP 2010 I was able to get a full server in no time.

Creating a group for a specific game is never a bad idea either. It either works or it doesn't and costs you nothing. Some MMO guilds run their entire out-of-game experience through Steam.

Peace!
