We can already see a hot new trend surfacing in the gaming hardware modding world: Hastily conceived designs featuring the handheld ShowWX laser projector. Yesterday, we saw what happens when the pint-sized display was adhered to an iPhone 3GS; today, we see how Nirav Patel managed to stick the projector (and a Spacepoint Fusion gyrometer) to a Zapper-equipped Wii Remote. The result is a somewhat disorienting 360-degree "virtual reality" display, which is just perfect for playing simple, open source first-person shooters with.
Check out a video after the jump to see Patel's projectorgun in action. We'd hate to find ourselves on the business end of that bad boy.

But with a laser projector, you don't lose focus when shifting perspective or moving from one wall to another.
The ShowWX seems like a really versatile device. I'm surprised nobody's yet used one with the Playstation Eye to create a portable multitouch "Surface."

It's amazing how many people are finding awesome ways of utilizing Nintendo's sensor bar.
Except Nintendo.

I'm sure Nintendo has tried a lot of cool tech ideas for the Wii, but in the end (since they're a buisness) it's all about pricing. Sure, this would be amazing. But, as someone said, that's like $100+ thing he's using. I doubt there's a way for nintendo to price effectively market that.

This would be perfect... if only my home had a tiny, cylindrical room. Perhaps I can go crash a barn silo somewhere.

So, if he's using the fusion to get orientation - it's a $100 sensor, what is he using the wii controller for? publicity?
At any rate it's a cool use of a micro-projector - anything that can be set up for HMD use could use the same setup.

Okay, now I see from his site (eclecti.cc) that he's using the joystick and buttons on the wii remote.

Off-topic, but Joystiq, get a new comments system already. The "YOU DID IT" stuff is beyond annoying. Yes, I have an account, it's your stupid software that sucks.
