Alan Wake won't be exploring the darkest corners of your Xbox until next week but developer Remedy has already announced via Twitter the release date for the game's first DLC episode: July 27.
... Or is it July 28, as seen on promotional dashboard show Sent U A Message host Daniel Maher's Twitter account? We're just as confused as you presumably are and have reached out to all parties (including Microsoft) to help us cast some light on things. Inconsistent release dates aside, users will be able to access the DLC through the included token download card packed in with all new copies of the game. No word yet on how much the DLC will cost those of you who go the used games route.

Looks like I will be picking this up at midnight with Red Dead next week. Should hold me over until Transformers comes out.

Not sure why but I always assumed this was a more European site than American... either way, my point is the game is out tomorrow (and for some of us, today) in Europe and the UK.

This is a smart move.... too many people wait too long to release dlc and people don't play the game anymore.
I think remedy is on to something with the idea of episodes to tell the story. Since each one is a separate "package" it works well as DLC. I think if there is a Alan Wake 2 they might make a downloadable version in addition to the retail release (where they just release each episode individually on live and charge $10 per episode).

An awesome game and the first episode is free? Mmm. Love ya, Remedy!
I'll buy the other episodes if the first one is good!

This has me somewhat worried... The title's been in development for many years, and yet it yields only about 10 plus hours or so. This makes me wonder if much of the contents have indeed been cut- and put into episodes.
Even so, most developers who'd do such a thing wouldn't admit it. Take BioWare for example, what with Kasumi and all. They had a placeholder for her on the two discs, and yet the DLC is to be purchased for you to enjoy it.
I guess this sort of thing is the wave of the future...

Nothing was "cut". DLC is now a key part of development for every developer, whether they it in public or not.
That, my friend, is not a cause for concern, however.
Alan Wake as a game is a linear story driven experience, so of course you'd expect 10-12 hours. This isn't an RPG. I bought most AAA linear story driven experiences last generation and they were the same length. And from what I hear, Alan Wake offers a very satisfying conclusion, but it leaves doors open, just like every game that gets sequelized (not a bad thing).
Alan Wake's DLC simply offers more beyond what you get on day one. This makes me happy. I always beg devs to offer some good single player DLC. We don't get enough of it. Usually it's either complete shit or it's multiplayer maps.
When you buy a game, you're entitled to what's in the retail box. And there are many reviews and impressions to take in before spending $59.99 on a game. Anything beyond that is certainly a component of the game that you are not entitled to. Whether it's worth the $5-$10 they charge is another argument. But just like when you buy a standard stock car and you get average wheels/rims, you're not entitled to something more or better. You have to pay extra if you want to go beyond the stock option. You pay for what's in the package. And you're getting the full Alan Wake game as it was intended. And if you read reviews, most people seem to be satisfied with the experience you get on day one.
Good post-launch DLC should be encouraged. And this is free. Always nice.

No game drought this summer. :)
I bought 3D Dot Game Heroes Yesterday (and I love the hell out of it..). I'm getting this next week. Then at the end of june, Starcraft 2 will most likely keep me occupied until the end of summer.

As does every other big PS3 release.
Blu-ray doesn't equal jack when it comes to free DLC.
So how about that 5 hour Heavenly Sword? Great game, but Blu-ray did that game's length no great service!
