In his latest Divnich Debrief column at IndustryGamers, EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich has made some predictions for E3 2010. Divnich sees this year's expo as a pivotal one for the industry, noting that new technologies like PlayStation Move, Project Natal and the 3DS must make a big splash. Otherwise, says Divnich, we may see industry funding driven toward sectors like MMOs and social gaming. Divnich sees the expo as an "inflection point" in gaming history, saying, "Either E3 2010 acts as a positive catalyst and boosts industry confidence, or it reinforces the negative notions about the long-term viability of traditional gaming."
Divnich makes a few predictions about the show, notably that Rockstar may reveal Grand Theft Auto 5, though it won't announce any hard street date if it does. Divnich believes, however, that you can expect a new teaser for Agent. Nintendo, meanwhile, will announce the official name of the 3DS and announce plans to launch the device in "at least two regions" this November. He also expects the unit will sell 5 million units by March 2011. Furthermore, Nintendo may finally show off its Vitality Sensor in more detail.
Beyond that, the show will likely revolve around Move, Project Natal and the 3DS. "Whatever the outcome or your own personal opinion, one thing is for certain," says Divnich, "E3 2010 is a must attend event for anyone with any vested interest in the video game space."

I liked GTA IV , it was that filter or whatever that made everything fuzzy that I didn't like.

I would rather a new Gen IV GTA Game were announced than number 5, provided they remove some of the realism that ruined GTA IV I would definitly get it.

Interesting.. I liked the realism (but hated the pidgins and lack of checkpoints); you should be able to choose whether to restart from a checkpoint or start at hospital when you mess-up. Actually the biggest problem of that game was I never died/failed because it was my fault, it was always because of something completely ridiculous (Roman walking off balcony, Riding motorbike on flat-road causes it to flip).

The realism made that game so dreadfully boring. It's nowhere near as fun as the older GTAs and because of this it suffers. Not that it matters what I think of it, the game received perfect scores from several gaming websites and sold millions of copies. Rockstar isn't going to change anything.

it's pretty scary when you think about the future of gaming and where it can go. i mean, what else can they do?

there's plenty left to do. the problem is that most publishers are less willing to take a chance on something like Heavy Rain, and more willing to package CoD4 in a CoD5 box and sell it. but it's hard to blame them when consumers are more willing to buy the latter, and less the former. it's a catch 22: it's too much about the money, but money is what keeps the industry afloat.
ideal gaming (for me) isn't necessarily a reinvention of input device, or social gaming, but games that are as thought-provoding and stirring as they are fun to play. as much as i await Socom 4, i'm far more interested in Last Guardian, LittleBigPlanet 2, Mod Nation Racers and Fable 3 (IF the promises are kept this time).

thats true about some of the awesome games coming out, i mean if developers keep things fresh with their IP's then it doesn't seem that bad. Borderlands for me was insane cuz it was just right on the fps and rpg elements. but then ive been burned on other titles so called promises.

Time travel is no big deal nowadays. Every time I turn on the Wii, I am instantly transported back to 2002.

what do you mean? Sony and MS are just copying Nintendo's successful moves.
And Nintendo's trying to copy Apple's gyro+touch screen + online DLC store model.
The portable 3D thing will be very interesting, but could be a weird gimmick. As it is, the DS lite is awesome, but I only ever play my iPod touch.
What's really interesting is if Nintendo could get a REAL online service.

This is going to be a killer E3 and one of the best ever. Move looks incredible, as a Wii gamer who wants to buy a Ps3, enhancing the games on the console with motion controls is just spectacular. If RE5 gets a patch to get similar controls to RE4 on the Wii, then omfg. Im looking forward to seeing Zelda and Golden Sun DS, as well as the inevitable Pikmin 3. I'm not even sure WHAT Microsoft are doing this year. Showing off Fable 3 i hope, but thats the only thing i can imagine that would grab my attention. Natal is balls. Hairy man balls.
Posted: May 14th 2010 1:07AM drewciferpike said
I dunno: Natal's hardware made me perk up and pay attention because of the tech they've used. It's relatively simple, for what it does (and simple is usually better).
As an intentional Wii-only gamer, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a fan of Microsoft, so I'm still wary. If the software is robust enough to match the simplicity of the hardware, they might have a golden goose on their hands.
I honestly don't care what system pushes the industry forward, as long as there's constant evolution.

I expect move to fail for being a total rip off of the Wiimote, the 3DS will likely be a success, Natal will be the next Wii only more supported by third parties and have a far more sizable core game library, I doubt social gaming or MMOs will take over but multiplayer will take on a greater role.
Since I've made my E3 predictions I want my check that all analysts get!

We all know move is rip off of the Wiimote, we've seen the rip off software all ready and Natal has too much potential not to be good, as for Nintendo, they always find the fun.

Except for the fact that Move has been in development since the mid/early PS2 days.
If I remember right that's also around the same time Nintendo stealthily applied for a patent for a Gamecube motion controller add-on. Go figure, they started around the same time (and there's videos and patents to prove it).

What? All Natal is, is Eyetoy 2.0 and Move is Wiimote 2.0. I think they're both gonna do great and be well supported. Blind fanboys piss me off, I admit I have fanboy moments, but damn...

Also, I think Move will play a larger part as being supported in existing games than having it's own games (Examples: Socom, Resident Evil 5, LittleBigPlanet, Flower, etc.)

How is it fanboyism to point out move will fail and the two console manufactures will do just fine?

@ Armageddon. I don't get why you'd think the move would fail for ripping off the Wiimote/nunchuck when its the wiimote/nunchuck that has made the Wii so successful. Its the move itself that puts the Ps3 up quite a bit higher in priority of stuff i need to get. You speak about "ripping off" as a bad thing. Nintendo did the Analog Stick and rumble first on the N64, Sony very quickly changed the original Ps1 controller to have a paid of analog sticks and built-in rumble. Sony had the first dvd-enabled console too, are you gonna rip on the 360 for having dvd-based media? Its very common in the industry for 1 manufacturer to take a risk (usually Nintendo) and if/when it pays off, the other manufacturers take advantage of the hype with their own versions and improve on it. Its not a bad thing you idiot, its evolution, and its made games and consoles what they are today.

Move and Natal need killer apps, which i haven't seen from Move's current crop (you're not going to get anywhere by making better versions of the stuff that made Wii popular). Move could get some good 3rd party support, but it needs a standout home-grown title to really get off the ground.

I'll watch the pressers of all the streams again, thats for sure. I'm interested in the 3DS for sure, will it be gimmicky head tracking pretending to be 3-D or real deal 3-D without glasses? I hope we see a gameplay demonstration of The Last Guardian, DC Universe Online, Little Big Planet 2 and Agent ... Playstation Move needs to show me it's worth my money. Also, the megatons ... oh what will they be?
Posted: May 13th 2010 10:45PM Johnnynumber5 is powered by cell said
In terms of Megatons ... perhaps the Respawn guys will announce a working title? Thats probably premature though because they aren't really even fully formed studio yet. Maybe we'll see Ubisoft announce the PS3 version of Splinter Cell (like every other game in the series has done) ... don't know.
