I hate rapid fire and all who use it.

As a person with an extremely fast trigger finger, I loathed anyone who resorted to a modded controller back in the days of pre-patch Call of Duty 4. They ruined it for everyone. I don't understand why Joystiq would advocate something that is, in my mind, cheating.

I wondered if people get away with this crap online. Do a lot games prevent these for online gaming or just those that release a patch you think?

It depends on the game. Most games, like Halo, have a ROF cap on their guns, so these dont really help all that much. But with CoD4 pre-patch, there was literally no ROF cap, it was how fast you could pull the trigger. Some people could pull the trigger pretty damned fast. Then you had Timmy and his 120 dollar modded controller ruining the game for everyone.

Yeah, people like that are the reason I'm weary of online gaming. I want to win and get beat by people with the same tools available to us all within the game only.

It is reassuring to see all the hate displayed for turbo controllers here. I thought I was the only one who didn't like turbo and seeing the initial Joystiq article was disheartening but I am actually cheered by all the negative comments.

Seriously Joystiq, I've stood by you through a lot while others were lighting the torches, sharpening the pitchforks, and heating up the tar but this is too far. I understand reporting on all things related to gaming but the way this is presented is practically an endorsement for douchebaggery as far as I can tell.

I don't get it. What would you need rapid fire for anyway? Unless you're using the pistol, aren't all the guns in COD fully automatic anyway? I mean, you just hold down the button and bullets spray out. Where would this come in handy?

Is the Joystiq main page broken? The ads on the right and the breaking news and featured stories columns are all missing but are present when i get past the "jump". Also when I scroll to the bottom of the page the "next" button is missing.

What the HELL, Joystiq? This kind of this is NOT advocated among gamers. I heard of at least one vendor getting banned from PAX for selling modded controllers.

This is the most heat Joystiq's gotten from readers in a while! I bet it's to stir up some drama. Down with auto fire! If your finger can't move fast enough then pick up a new hobby.

I don't really see why this is such a big deal. Rapid fire is great for many games. And it's particularly great for many single player and old school games.

It's a legit product that has nothing to do with cheating. Sure, I guess some people have found a way to cheat, but there are always going to be rapid fire controllers, so the onus is on the devs of online matches to prevent this from being a problem.

I guess I just don't play the games with this problem, but apparently it's a problem for a lot of people. It's trivial to have some kind of protection against this in the code. It's the dev's fault. Why ban the entire product for people who don't cheat? It's not like joystiq is advocating cheating here.

I don't see the big hooha about rapid fire either ... Rapid fire is shit, I dont see how it can give you an advantage it only takes a few bullets to kill. Rapid fire ends up wasting a whole clip for nothing, whats the point ? its just wasting bullets. I dont even consider rapid fire cheating..

What pisses me off and what I have seen being used by the biggest ass holes is a lag switch..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyXBWJYZnjA -- This is genuine cheating..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooq_vFjLP1w&feature=related

I think sony and microsoft should build an anticheat mechanism like punkbuster, if your in game and your net connection continuously drops they should knock you out of psn / xbl for 30 minutes at a time.. I am sure all of these ass holes would stop using lag switches then..

If you actually watch the 1st video, the idiot takes half an hour to strip the ethernet cable (ever heard of stripping with your fingers, easiest way to do it and you only remove plastic) and to top it off he logs in with his username onto psn he has to earn dumb ass of the year here..

If you watch to the very end he demonstrates this in action on a socom game and the 2nd vid demonstrates this in cod4 on the 360. Next time your sitting there and shooting and the person doesn't die but you end up dead or he just disappears its because the asshat is using a lag switch.. Ive seen it happen in MAG recently as well, a specific clan in MAG all of them had lag switches. Ive seen it in
cod4 , 5 and 6 as well..

Egotism? I don't think so.

The dude builds bodies and bangs chicks, most likely in that order. Being honest about your lifestyle choices is a good thing. It also helps us know who to ban from our games without a second thought, which is really very kind of him (or her!?).

I feel you should do whatever you can to get the most entertainment out of your purchase.

I agree with you from a single player aspect, but not multiplayer. I dunno, the person who is really losing out is the owner of a product like this. Very similar to ANY glitching of leaderboards in gaming. Yay you made it to the top with a great score, but didn't do it legit. It's more depressing for the consumer than the people playing against them.

Exactly, they know they aren't getting those scores legitamately. So if they want to do it, let them.

Anything done outside the rules/scope of normal gameplay is cheating. That's why glitching, hacking, or using controllers like this is considered cheating. It's also why spamming moves, camping, and only using the most powerful gun is not cheating.

Instead, trust it to some potentially crummy add-on which might fry your controller and defintely voids your warranty. I don't use third party stuff, but I certainly wouldn't choose this over that..
