Rollercoaster Tycoon movie rights picked up by Sony Pictures

Sony Pictures has been rather successful with its Resident Evil movie franchise, so it only makes sense that the company has acquired the rights for the next big video game movie: ~~Heavy Rain~~ ~~God of War~~ Rollercoaster Tycoon. According to a report by Reuters, the project is being developed as a live-action/CGI hybrid at Sony Pictures Animation, with Harald Zwart, director of the upcoming Karate Kid remake, taking an executive producer role.

Heat Vision adds that David Ronn and Jay Scherick are attached as writers, tasked with adapting the PC game into a marketable movie. Perhaps that should be an easier task than their current project: writing The Smurfs reboot. Considering the original games had no story whatsoever, the writers will have a lot of creative freedom -- as long as they remember to put rollercoasters in it.

This is the only way the rollercoaster tycoon movie would make any sense

they need a MvC2 reference here: "I wanna take you for a ride!!!!"

No. They don't. In fact there are absolutely no scenarios past, present, or future that require or would even benefit from any amount of "I Wanna Take You For A Ride". Even suggesting this is punishable by death in several countries.

i love this game, but a movie... really?

Really? You can't see this being a really cheesy kids flick about a group of lucky rapscallions who won the big prize to run their own theme park but little did they know how hard it would be, etc, etc, evil rival tycoon from Huge Theme Park Corporation, etc?

Yes, exactly what I'm hoping to see. Crowds of people with balloons on an unfinished sidewalk... rollercoaster approaching... our hero, call him Mr. Mason, working furiously to finish the sidewalk before disaster strikes...

I can't wait for the scene where the unseen hand of God suddenly forces tons of park goers to let go of their balloons, forcing them to buy new ones.
Or the scene where it starts to rain and the park guests discover the Umbrella Stand has begun to sell umbrellas for the new low price of $69.99 a pop!

I loved that first RCT game.

I remember liking Sim Theme Park more, but can't really justify that.

Monopoly? Rollercoaster Tycoon? Reboots and remakes galore. Hollywood is really reaching for ideas these days. So when's the Joystiq movie coming out?

I thought Joystiq the movie was already out on adult home video... I think they're up to 5 or 6 sequels.

Apparently Sony has got deep pockets and money to burn because this makes about as much sense as Kim Kardashian/Paris Hilton/Justin Bieber making an album...

I'm not sure you really need to license 'Rollercoaster Tycoon' for a movie. Why not simply just make a movie about roller coasters and call it whatever (i.e., Tracks). You have a GREATER advantage that way. That it ties back to a game, makes me leary as most video game to movies translations... well, suck.

It's a safe bet that they release another game in the series as well. My kids and I love RT3. Mostly for the sandbox mode.

I'm sorry, but in order to be accurate, the movie's going to have to feature cleaning crews outside the ride exits constantly cleaning up puke. I swear, I can never have enough of those guys.

Drat! Now I have the sudden urge to go find my Rollercoaster Tycoon CD again and play it for nine hours straight. :(

This'll make Garfield look like an Academy Award winner.

I imagine this movie will play out like "Furry Vengeance" but with wacky rollercoaster rides.

If they make the movie anything like what my parks used to turn out like it'll be rated R.

People flying off of half-built roller coasters, unruly patrons getting dropped into the water by some benevolent force and drowning and people just pissing on the sidewalk due to $8 bathroom fees.

I'd see it.

Is this a joke? I mean, who will play the main role? A roller coaster? A mouse's cursor?

Or maybe those vomits everywhere?

A young man inherits his dead uncle's failing amusement park, and then discovers he is a telekinetic who can manipulate time

The main character will be Will Wright designing a roller coaster.
