Not only is Sega's Alpha Protocol going to be "the espionage RPG" (according to the box), but it's also the case study in mixed messages from the creators to the game press and public. IGN recently asked Obsidian associate producer Matt Hickman if he could clarify the key moments that held up the development process, noting that there had been "a lot of different, sometimes conflicting reports." Hickman responded, "The decision to move the game out from October [2009] was merely for repositioning and constituted a business decision only."
Strange -- considering that in February Hickman told MTV Multiplayer that there were "a few reasons" for the delay, including giving the game more polish, with "tweaks" to the lighting and inventory, and a general objective in "just bringing the whole quality level up."
Perhaps Obsidian and Sega have taken the "espionage game" a bit too literally (dare we discover this to be a viral marketing campaign that went way over our heads). As if being interrogated, the creators have erratically covered up the game's development tracks with changing stories. Last October, Alpha Protocol's expected release date was flat-out ignored by Sega, until the publisher came out of hiding a week later to confirm that the delay was "official." The reasons for the delay have been many -- and now just one: a business decision. We'll find out if the "repositioning" was the right business decision for Sega when Alpha Protocol breaks its cover on June 1.

I will always gladly take delays if it means to better the game. Keep on trucking Sega. You're doing pretty well.

Well it sounds like they delayed it without doing any more work on it. God, I really hope this game is good...but this is a bad sign...

It will definitely come down to being a hit or miss. Though it tends to be that way with Sega's publishing lately.

@Ben
You may be right, but I take releases game by game and try to not compare them to others. Rather take it for what it is, by itself. We'll never know until we get a release!

That video last week cracked me up. This game should take a VERY long delay, you know, to try and make it look like something other then a PS2 game...

Graphics aren't everything. I played KOTOR and Jade Empire (PC) long after the graphics were considered "dated" and I still loved it, because the game play and story were great. That being said, this game comes out while I'm on vacation, so I'll wait and see what the reviews say.

Deadly Premonition had PS2 graphics and was still a great game. As Seare says, graphics aren't everything.
P.S. - Jade Empire RULES.

True, but it wasn't just the graphics, it was the animations to. I could defiantly be wrong, but its usually a bad sign

Graphics don't matter when you are playing a classic game all over again but I expect a lot from a new release in today's climate. This game went from day 1 purchase to not even a rental. It looks as bad as the new dead to rights.

don`t know you guys but i have the feeling this could be the biggest flop of the year, a shame as it really looked like a winner. But the decision to make the fights like virtual fighter 1 has created many doubts..... hope we are all wrong......

Looks like crap and the early previews agree too, hopefully they can pull it out and get it going cuz it sounds like it could be a good game if done right.

Sadly, it'll be a clunky mess just like every other Obsidian game.
I'm already prepared for Fallout: New Vegas to break my heart.

I have this game preordered but my finger is tensed over the cancel button. I can't see anything about this game that sounds unique and the visuals look like they are 2 years outdated (Hopefully the screens Im looking at are from before the delay). It's just got nothing that makes me excited.
So I'm appealing to the biomass here, before I cancel my order, tell me what it is about this game that you think makes it interesting.

I think one big thing that has me interested is the combat system. The fact you can hand to hand combat with Kenpo is a pretty great idea. That's a lot to bet on though.

It's hard to say exactly what makes that earlier video off putting. I love deadly premonition and the graphics don't bother me, but then again that game was $20 and created by a small studio.
Alpha protocal is not any of those things. Its being developed by Obsidian which is a well known RPG superstar developer group. They have a legit budget (or enough to warrent more than 2 keyframes of animation for walking).
I think they are delaying it again due to the negative feedback of the video. I don't think anyone at all was impressed with it.

I can't wait for this game. I love Obsidian's stuff. However, deep down in my gut, I know this is going to be critically received as a "shit" game. If you don't believe me, I recommend you watch 1UP's latest Game Night.
Glitches and weird oddities galore. This needed A LOT more polish.

They can delay it for business reasons and then take more time on the game.
If anyone has ever thought that Obsidian has had too much time to develop one of their games, then I've not met that person.

I have high hopes for this game.
While it isn't visually appealing, the game mechanics and RPG elements are very interesting, the story telling seems good and the different interaction choices between characters is good too, I hope all that pans out well though.

From my understanding the rpg elements are virtually non existent.

This has all the signs of a doomed game. Delay it long enough and you'll have an outdated game compared to the competition, ie Mercenaries 2

I've been a staunch defender of this game since the first info about it was released, but with a more realistic approach (the opposite of "ignorant fanboyism"). You know, the game really does look like garbage considering what we know that the Xbox 360 and PS3 are capable of. That said, the fact that its developers are obvious fans of Mass Effect (one of my favorites this gen), I just can't be brought to write it off. I reserved it yesterday, and I'm looking forward to it. The graphics are bland, but if I'm told a good story that asks me to replay it again for a different outcome after I'm finished, then I'll be happy.

I'm going to get this out of my next paycheck, probably the only game I'll get in the month of June.

Can they delay it for another year to "bring the whole quality level up?"
I was really excited for this in 2009 but the recent videos have left me disappointed in the same things everyone else has bitched about: the voice acting and animation.
:\
