"Our core audience of 16- to 34-year-old males are much more familiar with Green Day music than The Beatles."

You see, that's actually the problem here. Everyone knows that Green Day suck ass.

Just give up on releasing these stupid one-band games, unless you allow them to be moved over into the original game.

Uh.. did you not see the entire last paragraph?

"The clear market advantage that the Green Day game does have is the benefit of being compatible with Rock Band's existing and ever-growing library, as its tracks are exportable (for a fee) to Xbox 360 and PS3 hard drives and playable in the main iterations of the series. Though Guthrie didn't say as much, it's possible Beatles sales suffered because the game was a standalone project, which didn't mesh well with the Rock Band ethos and its core demographic."

My sole reason for not buying The Beatles: Rock Band was that it would not in any way integrate with any of my other 200+ Rock Band tracks. If they released The Beatles: Rock Band Track Pack, I would have been willing to shell out $40 for just the songs.

While the new look was pretty cool, I'd much rather have one game with access to all of my songs than any new animations or graphics. I barely get to see any of that stuff while I'm playing anyway. And how many people really cared about the 3 part harmonies? Are there really that many people out there who all want to be singers? Whenever I play with my friends, nobody ever sings.

Just stick to making full versions of the game with minor tweaks that allow us to import all of our songs. Here's a tip guys:

Single band games = terrible idea
Single band track packs = great idea when reasonably priced

I disagree that Single band games are a horrible idea. I like the idea of one day seeing the story and history of some of my favorite bands played out this way. In some regards I'm more interested in that then a band featuring Dakota Fanning. The Beatles Rock band had a decent offering but I wanted more depth. Not just the good times. With Green Day Rock Band I see myself getting much less of that which is tragic. I do predict it may sell better then Bealtes though just for the slight fact that most people have at least 1 song on their iPhone or Zune from Green Day.

Also 3 part Harmonies were awesome. Can't wait for it to appear in RB3.

That's a fair comment.

My issue isn't so much with it just being about one band, as it can be fun to get all of the extra goodies, but with me not being able to integrate any of those songs into my core experience which is almost always freeplay mode. Single band games can work, as long as I can either export the songs to the main game, or at the very least, access all of my DLC songs. What they did with The Beatles, and what Activision did with the Guitar Hero: Single Band games, was terrible.

I can imagine there are a few people out there who enjoy the addition of three part harmonies, I just can't imagine it being a significant portion of the audience.

I forgot to mention that I agreed with your integration comments. Was happy to hear that they were going to allow this with Green Day Rock Band and Lego Rock band last fall.

The integration thing took the prospect of me purchasing this from "not even entertaining the idea" to a close "maybe". Green Day isn't the best band around but I'd be lying if I said I didn't think some of their stuff would be fun to play in the main game. Their story doesn't really interest me though, just give me the music.

I think they are going to find that rhythm games are in general on their way out. I predict poor sales (under expectations) for Green Day Rock Band.

I don't agree with this entirely. I do agree that they'll see fewer sales than they expect for this game, but I don't think music games are on the way out.

I simply believe people are more interested in the music game as a platform that they add music to than buying a new iteration every 6-12 months like sports games. I think this game will underperform, and that Rock Band 3 will sell very well.

Over the last 6 months the number of players actually playing Rock Band has decreased. I don't have a chart of the last six months but even the last 30 days paints a pretty clear picture:

http://360voice.gamerdna.com/game.asp?id=%2509%255d%253adh%29k%253f%257ex&type=2

Also annecdotally I notice that fewer way fewer people are entering the challenges anymore. It use to be you'd be lucky to get in the top 10,000. Now its easy to routinely make it into the top 100, and no i haven't gotten any better.

I don't necessarily think that shows a general decline in the viability of music games. Rock Band 2 as a whole is getting older, and new games are being released in the genre which will undoubtedly take away from the amount of players playing Rock Band 2. Green Day: Rock Band likely will underperform the same way The Beatles: Rock Band did, but I do not think it shows any sort of doomsday apocalypse for the music game genre.

I don't want to sound like a nimrod, but i wander if "Green Day" really will sell more then the Beatles just cause they are modern. Whether there are 39, or 1039 people lined up to buy it It just seems like Beatles has more of that.. classic.. feel to it.. you know. Even if you don't listen to the beatles as much as othe rmusic you may own.. didn't some of us American dimwits feel Like Hitchin' a Ride on beatles mania.

I might be in the minority here, but The beatles felt special, this feels Cool, but like cashing in. And hopefully MTV doesn't end up on a road of broken dreams if more shoplifters buy this than us working class heros.

Not to sound like a basket case, but I would prefer to say good riddance to all these 1 shot band versions and just have some compilation DLC released. i am sure by the time September 31st roles around there will be another special version in the works.

(DISCLAIMER I was not trying to make any real statement with this comment it was simply a container for a joke.)

but i can see myself firing up my PS3 10 years from now to play Beatles Rock Band.

To further clarify, comparing The Beatles to Greenday is like comparing Hemmingway to whatever the name of the chick is that wrote the twilight series. Kids are definitely going to identify more with that chick, but kids also have no taste in anything. Remember when harmonix featured indie bands into their games to try and get a younger generation hooked on good music? Now they are making a greenday game? Put on your money hats.

Maybe the less than stellar sales were because that expanded market would have had to spend several hundred dollars on a game console, the game itself, and the instruments.

I don't understand why people feel so burned by these type of comments. Who is more popular then who, who sold better, who slept with who's mother. Well maybe it's because everyone takes this as a personal offense. Lighten up gamers. It's music and here on the internet all music is the same. By the same I mean all the music you like sucks to everyone else...

This shouldn't be about "Who's Better?" because it's not fair to compare The Beatles to Green Day. But game-wise, I'm a huge Green Day and not excited about this game. It seems there's going to be less than 50 songs and most GD songs are 3 and half minutes or less so it's not like we're going to be getting some furious jam-sessions here...a rental title at best.

I see it more as a "wait for it to drop to $30, then buy it as a track pack for RB2/3". I might play through the story mode once (for the achievements if nothing else...), but I'm frankly not all that interested in The Story of Green Day. And I say this having grown up in the Bay Area and seen them a few times in the early days...

But yeah, I don't get the comparisons either. They're different bands, different genres, appealing to different audiences (though I suspect there's some overlap in the fan base, it's probably not a huge percentage). The Beatles would never have released as DLC for RB, so I don't understand all the incessant complaints over not being able to do so. The Beatles/Apple Corps had a narrow (some might call it "old fashioned") vision of what they wanted a Beatles game to be, and would never have licensed any other way. Green Day, being perhaps more savvy and open to technology, are willing to allow their songs to be played outside the context of "their" game. I mean, heck, they're already available as DLC. Good for them, and I suspect they will sell more based on this ability. Fortunately, both bands will get the game they want.

Now, if Harmonix could just get to work on Pink Floyd: Rock Band... I don't give a damn if I can't export them, that'll be a day 1 purchase from me!

Oh, and Michael T., you aren't at get-off-my-lawn status yet; the bands he mentioned just aren't very well known at all (on account of bein' extreme metals). Several were around before Green Day, for example.

My only request would be to add Opeth and stuff onto that list; otherwise, thumbs up!

There seems like far more relevant bands out there that would have "core" appeal. Or was Green Day the only ones available for the price Activision wanted to pay? (which lowers my respect even more)

Ah, now it all makes sense. MTV is the one coercing this unnecessary title.

Be mindful that Harmonix does not have its hands on this title, it's being made by somoene else. The Treyarch of Rock Band, I suppose. They would never make such a title, I dare say.

lets just face the facts here. The Beatles are OUT of the radar for coming generations. sure, there will be the kids who get into them from their parents and such, but this is about money. The Beatles: Rock Band appeals to an older generation of people, not to say it doesnt to younger. But this creates a problem. All of the older fans of the Beatles probably dont know the difference between a Gigabyte and a Trilobite and never got into the whole technology thing. That makes MTV/Harmonix VERY sad when sales come. its not that the beatles are bad, not at all. just they are OUT of the Spectrum of music.

for instance. sure, milk is a great thing. but every time you pour a glass, you dont think "hmmm you know, without cow # 20483684B, there wouldnt be any of her kids to produce this milk". its out of sight, out of mind for most.

now in comes Green Day. Just released their second "concept" album. riding their American Idiot wave. their videos still get play on television, their songs are still played on radio stations aimed to the demographic, and their still touring, in the public sight as far as that. why would Harmonix NOT pick a band with such charisma and a large following? they would be dumb to. sure their songs are very similar to one another, and are mostly power chords. doesnt mean they are not going to be fun. i can see where the Beatles rock band was a bad choice in that area. The Beatles:rock band doesnt necessarily have the most ROCKIN sound track.

in closing. green day haters are going to hate on it. Beatles haters are going to hate on it. lets just shut the hell up about whose better, who deserves what, and who sucks, and just try to play some games. try it sometime. you may be suprised!

really guys? what are we all, 12? ageism is stupid. if you dont like a band, it doesnt mean you HAVE to complain about them. comparing 2 bands of different genres is like comparing mayonnaise to steak. because steak is a food, and mayonnaise is a condiment, the argument is invalid. saying the beatles are better than green day or vice versa, is stupid. TOTALLY DIFFERENT styles there.

in closing, dont waste your life complaining about things you hate. spend it doing stuff you like. go play the beatles rock band all you want, enjoy it. dont buy GD:RB, and enjoy that.

Green Day = 7 or 10 good songs.
The Beatles = every song is a classic masterpiece
