Usually, if you want to be a dictator, you need to find some impoverished country and navigate the treacherous political ladder all the way to the top. But thanks to Steam's sale on Tropico 3, you can achieve that end relatively quickly and cheaply. And with far less blood on your hands.
The Steam Special Edition version, which includes two additional maps for Sandbox mode and additional costumes and accessories for your avatar, will be available for 75% off over the next week -- a mere $7.50. And with the "Absolute Power" expansion now available for download, the offer becomes even more enticing. Viva El Presidente!

What's this game like? Is it worth the $7? I know it's not a lot but I honestly have no idea what to expect walking into this. Seems a little cheesy.

It's a sim city style game with a twist, You build an island nation have to keeping the rebels at bay while maintaining safe relations with the US and USSR. I was playing yesterday and some roudy tourists went joyriding in my personal El Presidente limo. I had them and their families executed.
It's also fun to go out as Fidel Castro and shoot at rebels with a pistol.

Let me elaborate a bit more. The game is played in missions. It presents you with different social or economic situations and your have to build a successful city under those conditions while trying to sneak as much money away to your personal Swiss bank account in the process.
If you have a inkling of curiosity I'd say the game is worth it, especially for the price.

The cheesiness is what makes it fun. I'd say it's more of a political simulation game than a civilization game. Your main goal is to stay in power, whether that be through democratic means or maintaining an iron grip on the island as a dictator. Like Evo said, you have to constantly keep rebels at bay and appease the US and USSR so that they don't invade you. I bought this for $13 and I considered that to be a steal.

I'd recommend the game at $7.50. Great graphics if you have a pretty high end PC. Gameplay is like Sim City but smaller in scope higher in fidelity. You can 'read the minds' of each individual person in your island, see them go to work, see where they live, everything. You manage wages, education levels, rent, housing quality, all the way to choosing what to make speeches about, nuclear testing, assassinating rebel leaders...

Worth a punt, surely. Couple of things I noticed: was surprisingly resource demanding on my PC; and it doesn't explain the core game concepts very well. Infectious music, though. :D

If I were to pick up this one would it still be worth getting the older titles? Or is this version significantly better.
