Lego Universe pre-orders now available

Somehow -- and we don't know how -- pre-orders for Lego Universe kicked off this past Friday and, again, we don't know how, there's no "special edition" that includes some actual Legos. Some of you Legomaniacs may already know, but boxed copies of the upcoming Lego MMO from Netdevil are now available for pre-order at Lego retail outlets, the online shop, the amusement park (Legoland!) and on LegoUniverse.com.

Dropping your 39.99 USD/EUR or 29.99 GBP on a copy will net you not just the game itself on DVD, but also a month of free play (30 days, to be precise), a "story leaflet," and a user guide -- some folks will also get an "exclusive Minifigure" and a code to redeem said Minifigure in-game ("while supplies last"). Though the game has been in closed beta for some time now, the game has yet to receive an official launch date. That said, we have to imagine that Netdevil is building towards that announcement, right? You know, with Legos? Isn't that what they do over there?

Ugh mega blocks the poor man's Lego. I remember my nan bought me mega blocks once I never spoke to her again.

I can understand hating MMOs but not Lego (though Mega Blocks are better now).

Finally the definite WoW killer is here. ( I played the beta)

I think there is a problem in that playing a game about lego might be considered even less cool than WoW

I hated the beta. What a simplistic game.

I was really hoping for it to be free2play, but then again it's Lego...

Gosh darn kids these days, why back in my day we had to build using physical lego bricks! And if we wanted to build with a friend, we would have to carry a bin to their house! In the snow! uphill!

And it cost $200... in 1910 money!

don't worry, there wasn't much building in this game anyways. your old fashioned legos > mmo legos.

i was in the beta and i thought game would go F2P. If it is p2p It fails to me lol.

Lego Island was one of the best PC games of all time, so I hope they continue to succeed with this. Long Live Lego!!!!!

Having played the beta a bunch, it's fun, but...

I don't know. I kinda think they would've been better off making it a console multiplayer platformer. I can't see playing it for more than a month or two.

This is mighty cocky of them. There is very little media, video or otherwise, on the game, and now we're supposed to pre-order it?

It said it will be released in Autumn 2010.

I've been in the beta since the start and the lag is horrible. I hope it gets fixed in the retail version.

Overall the game is sorta fun but the really need to change the playing times for it.

I've been on the beta for over a month now, and lag is horrible. The day they wanted to stress test the server was unplayable. I get more of an "Animal Crossing" MMO than say WoW. If they wait till fall to release, I think they will lose all their players once Cataclysm drops.

A Lego MMO, about ...building stuff? and I have to pay a monthly subscription AFTER the free one? Its bad enough that actual Lego's are expensive. :c

This just seems like a mega phone screaming hey pedophiles come here for easy victims, MMOs for kids are a bad idea all round.

There is a filter of what you can type in the game. It has to be approved before it'll send it to chat so...

@Haubergeon: there are always ways to get around systems and these perverts are determined bastards.

I know it's aimed at children, but... The beta gave me the impression it was too MMO and not enough Lego. It was like WoW Lite Lego mod. IMO, a Lego game should have you building things quite often. I kind of understand the branded ones, like Batman and Star Wars, but when it's just a Lego game, it should be about Legos!

Lego island was awesome. Im not really into mmos though.

Well, it looks like I just found my nephew his Christmas present.

Man, I wish my nephew would play MMOs. I'd get him Star Wars: TOR when it comes out. Instead it's all sports games and bakugan.

My nephew is literally obsessed with Legos.

This will be his first MMO, but he loves all the Lego games. And whenever he comes to visit, he breaks out his Legos, and starts building on my kitchen table.

As a big fan of Lego, and the Lego games, I have to say the beta utterly failed to impress me. Very generic MMO, with lite building mechanics slapped on.

I also have to seriously question the decision to make it subscription based. £40 per 6 months is not something a kid can afford, and I don't see many parents willing to put down that kind of money on a game either, especially if they have more than one child and would have to pay the subscription for each one.

As expensive as real Lego sets are, it's the much better option.

Just an FYI, people outside of the US/EUR store cannot see the pre-order, and I assume if I pre-order from the Us I wouldn't get my copy for weeks after it's release :(

Make it KOTOR Lego Star Wars and I'd play it.

This game should be free-to-play. There simply isn't enough to it to warrant the monthly fee.

It's fun and adorable but definitely not worth the monthly fee.

I don't get it at all...

I am playing beta and at the beginning of May there was a character wipe. With my new character (or minifig, as they are called there) I was able to complete 95% missions and achievements in _twelve_ hours... (Anyone care to compare that to basic WoW?) Sure, there are some left, but they would take an enormous amount of grind (smash 1000 enemies, anyone?). Also, at the moment one land is not available, but logically it would be about the same size as the rest.

What I am saying is that if you play the game very leisurely for three weeks, there will be little left to do. You could do the survival challenges and races, but there is simply not enough content right now.

Granted, they will add new content (that's what MMO is about, isn't it?), but it will be extremely hard to keep the user base at decent levels. It does explain the box price, however - they do not have much faith in subsequent month subscriptions (which are USD 10 per month).

Anyone actually play the beta? Is it any good.

I received a beta invite, but never got around to using it. Just been too busy.
