They actual DID do this with Halo! (Halo 3)

Except they ALSO had the DLC-only playlist, so it's like the best of both worlds!

Or the most sensible idea ever. For once the developers aren't forcing people to buy their DLC if they want to play online. People who say DLC isn't mandatory apparently don't know how frustrating it is to get kicked back to the lobby every time a new map comes up.

@Hello: Don't confuse "mandatory" with "poor programming". Without private servers, good matchmaking code and lobbies are still an elusive silver bullet.

Regardless of motivations, without a DLC-only playlist the developer has fractured paying customers from enthusiastic paying customers. Especially illogical given the apathy that seems to be in the Bioshock 2 multiplayer community. If I buy those maps I want to play them now, and lots. The next apparent step would be branding players that do and don't have a given map pack, so that enthusiastic players can harangue people into buying the DLC and not hold public games back.

So the only way for the 10 people who bought the maps is for them to play privately?

They should have done like every other FPS with a map pack and created a playlist with only the new maps.

So they rip off people who buy the first pack by selling them content already on the disc.

Then they rip off people who bought the second pack by selling them content they'll never get to play.

Any theories as to what Strike 3 will be?

What a stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid design choice. I was going to buy this DLC, but now no way. What a bunch of morons! How could they be so stupid?

Well I have only played the multiplayer a little since its so laggy and not fun. You can tell that the multiplayer was just tacked on to the final product to try to cash in on the multiplayer craze going on. Bioshock should always be a single player game.

They don't want to split the player base so they recommend that you setup a private match to play the new maps. That gives the same exact result as providing a DLC only option but makes the players due all the work setting it up. Laaaazzyyy.

Why not let people without the map pack play the levels with people who do own it, but only allowing you to select the levels or "vote" on them if you own the pack?

The current problem is that all the maps, DLC and non-DLC, are in the same pool of maps. In other words, the maps are in the "possible map" list whether you own the maps or not.

This is a problem though. People without the maps can't play them because their is no map file to load. People who do own the map can't play them because too many people don't own them.

Making a voting system wouldn't work because people not owning the maps would still be a problem for those who do own them.

The only possible fix is to make a DLC playlist that's only open to people who have those maps. Any possible "fix" that mixes non DLC owners with DLC owners will just lead to problems.

Include the maps as part of a patch so everyone has the data. People who buy the pack gain control over the maps, ones without can't pick the levels, but you can play them with others.

Everyones happy, and the only way the maps can be played is if a decent amount of people buy them.

You don't pick the level, it's random matchmaking. Your idea lets people enjoy all the benefits of the map pack with none of the cost.

No, the only way the maps can be played is if someone buys them, but people who don't own them can join in too.

Like the baseball bat in Left 4 Dead 2.

That's still not a great idea. Why buy the maps when you can play on them free (assuming someone else already has them). It means 1 person who bought them can join a match and suddenly everyone in the match gets to play them for free.

Also, the baseball bat in L4D2 was a non-essential melee weapon that didn't really offer that much over the standard in game melee weapons. There's a great difference between a simple bat and an entire level.

This is an incredibly stupid design choice. Why didn't simply do what Infinity Ward did in CoD4 with their Map Pack. If you don't have it, you simply get put into rooms with other people don't have it. If you do have it.......then yeah.

I don't see how this can't be any more complicated than a simple "if and then". Seriously.

I have the DLC but haven't played a single match on the new maps in the past ~6hrs of playing since the release of DLC... I never would have bought the DLC if I had known that wouldn't be a DLC playlist option. Certainly seems that the 2K gang hasn't played a recent MP title that all offer DLC playlists.

So it's like Wipeout HD, you can't race on Fury tracks online if you don't have the expansion.

Seems reasonable, though I don't know how one figures that doesn't split the player base. It does JUST that.

Sounds like they should have been a little more clear on the wording of said DLC.

At the best, I can say 2K Marin is being incredibly consistent so far.

I am glad I didn't buy the DLC for $10 and not be able to play yet. Plus, if you play in a private match, you won't get credit for your online mp stats, I guess. I know the trophies say in non-private match. That's not good.

Ouch. They're obviously new to this whole online multiplayer thing. All companies have different ideas about the best way to setup playlists to deal with DLC maps, and this is possibly the most inelegant and annoying way I've ever heard of. They need to talk to the people at Infinity Ward (the few remaining) and figure out how to get their shit together.

So... More reasons not to buy DLC. You pay for something you can't actually play. Well until the day they make you required to have the DLC for the playlists, then people who just bought the game can't play.

The endless cycle of why charging for maps suck.

I have to say,,, I had bought the metro map pack. I kinda like the MP but not as much as alot of other shooters out there but because it is so easy to lv up quickly I find it some what fun anyway, I had bought the map pack to get a bit of change of scenery and was looking foward to the 6 new maps and other stuff that came with it. I am throughly pissed that I can not even play them this is NOT a design desision it is a design FLAW they clearly did not think this all the way through no matter what they tell me. I also think that this was faulse advritisment due to the fact that there was never a metion of ONLY being able to use this in private matchs (at least for the time being. I am not sure what to do but a refund is not to far from my mind nor/or do I think that anyone who did buy this should have to pay for any DLC pack to fix the problems that this pack has. I have a feeling that 2K will say, "If you have the metro pack and you want to play in public ranked matchs you need to buy this patch for our mistake for 240 MS. I am calling shanangigs on this and probl;y 2k to get my money back. They basterdized one of my faveriote franchises because they wanted to make the game "more accesable/cassuel and now we all have to suffer the slow death of the fracnchise that could have been.
