Nintendo of America announced a strategic partnership with the American Heart Association this morning, effectively adding the AHA stamp of approval to all retail boxes of Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sports Resort, and the Nintendo Wii itself. "The brand serves as a chance to remind people about the benefits of a healthy approach to living and how active-play video games can be an integral part of a healthy lifestyle," the partnership's official website explains.
In addition to the marketing partnership, the AHA and Nintendo will host a "multidisciplinary summit of representatives from a variety of fields ... to take a closer look at the synergies and benefits of active-play video games," entitled the "Innovation Summit." No details have been provided on when and where said summit will occur. Finally, various "active-play Nintendo video games" will be available to play at select "Start! Heart Walk" events this fall.
Also, no, Nintendo hasn't explained the Vitality Sensor yet.

It can't really be that good of a workout if they're all dressing so nicely.

Does this make the Nintendo Wii an official "exercise machine" and not a "videogame console"? "I'm on my exercise machine" is a much nicer sounding excuse for playing games. *wink*

Phase 1: Buy an exercise machine (elliptical, treadmill, etc) and stick it in front of your TV.
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Lose weight!
Although, be mindful of what games you choose to play if you go with a treadmill. You might not realize how much physical reaction you have while gaming until you're trying to walk at the same time - I learned that the hard way, with Final Fantasy XIII oddly enough. I always tend to drift left/right when turning the camera.

not sure what to say about this.....
I mean while it will help some people get off their asses and work out....of which some will quit after a few times like most people do(I know people that buy treadmills EVERY year for new years), I just don't see this taking off that well......time will tell tho

Brilliant marketing move, even if it really does nothing substantial.

Is that Reggie in the background? And why is he shamelessly criticizing the size of my manhood?

Interesting Considering that an hour of playing CODis actually the same amount of exercise as 40 mins of Wii fit. So how many hours of Wii Fit do you play vs. COD?
Then add it up and see which game you actually need to credit with burning the most calories.
And were talking about the high impact exercise games for comparisons. Playing as if you were actually performing the real sport not just moving your arms to waggle.

Huh? I have played an hour of Call of Duty, either W@W or Reflux.
I have also put in 40 minutes of Wii Fit.
In no way is an hour of Call of Duty = to 40 minutes of Wii Fit.
Where are you obtaining your info from? Should one be doing actions like the old FPS commercials for Wii, jumping from behind the couch ect???

There are many articles about the Wii and losing weight that shows playing Wii games (The ones that require you acting like your really boxing, or really playing tennis with the full range of motion) burn 40% more calories than playing a game with a regular joystick like COD.
No one plays those Wii games actively for that period of time so you actually probably lost more weight playing regular games just due to how long you play them.
Just google some articles on Wii and Weight loss vs. traditional games, they will all support what I'm saying here.

Neither one of those guys pictured has ever played or even heard of Metroid Prime.
Just give me the real Zelda for wii and we'll go our separate ways, no hard feelings bro.

Good for you. Like I said, give me the real Zelda for Wii and we're done Nintendo. No hard feelings at all, but I am no longer your consumer and the titles you push demonstrate that on a consistant basis.
I hope one day you'll get to play your survival horror game on the Wii with this sensor, and I hope it doesn't suck. Really. Though I'm not waiting around for that Unicorn to land.
At least while you're waiting there'll be plenty of health 'games' to play. I'd rather just get outside and do the real thing, games are for escape, release, down time.

I love going into stores like CVS and seeing "we fitness" or "yoga training at home" 150 dollar machines that poorly imitate the wii's already cheap software. But hey, the housewives are happy right?

We get it Nintendo; making great games is second to marketing health products. Soccer moms and the elderly are the new "core" gamers...

Or you could just work out for an hour. I don't wanna be sweating while playing my games.

Check out pedal360 if you want to work out on an exercise bike while playing non-shovelware racing games. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1388052880/pedal360-turn-your-exercise-bike-into-a-video-game

I'm happy that gaming has gained some relevance outside of the 'couch potato' stereotype that alot of non-gamers have of it. It would be nice if Sony and MS follow this lead and implement their own physical fitness titles. First of it's good PR. Secondly it's good business (turn on your TV at 3 am and scan all the gym equipment crap they sell), and thirdly, some physical exertion is always a good thing.

Great. This means we're stuck with an inevitable 30-minute demo of the Vitality Sensor during the E3 presser.
I hate Nintendo.
