What, did you think the company that created Halo only had one gentleman suitor after parting ways with Microsoft? Don't be silly -- the studio, which recently formed a ten-year partnership with publishing supergiant Activision, was also approached by EA last year. David DeMartini, general manager for EA Partners, explained to CVG, "we had extensive conversations with them, but could never really figure out a deal that made sense for both of us. It just didn't come to fruition."
Though Bungie was ultimately snatched up by one of EA's biggest competitors, DeMartini claimed that he's not bitter. "I don't want to see them fail - I want them to be successful," he explained. "And when they start up a second team, we'll have other discussions with them about that game as well - because they're a great studio." My, what a twisted, complex love triangle that would be.

Yikes, what a scary thought THAT is. Just imagine all of Bungie's future games having the online code thingie to unlock "the rest of" online content and online play. Oh wait, Activision will undoubtedly follow the same business plan. Oh well, there goes the hobby...

There's nothing wrong with buying used games.
It's when you buy used games from Gamestop at 92% the price of a new game that's a problem. The developer loses money, and Gamestop creates a very profitable second hand market at the developer's expense.
Used cars and books cost much less than new ones...

Yes, a book or car is perfect examples of used items being sold...
After all, a game does degrade when you use it, it's ... pages get torn ... and you need to buy ... parts from the company to keep it running ... and the graphics degrade so new games look better?
No wait, they might not be the perfect examples after all.

he should have just said used movies.....I can go to the pawn shop right NOW and get a used blu-ray for $15 or less.....even IF the original buyer paid $40 for it(like an idiot) and it has no scratches....
fact is Gamestop RAPES people....look at GameFly....I can buy used games from them....and it could be just a few weeks old and I get it for $15-25 off of the NEW price.....not just a measly $5

Uh, what? So buying used from Gamestop is bad because the developer loses money... but there's nothing wrong with buying used games!

People can argue about project $10 etc all they want, fact is when you buy a game used the developer gets no money.
You can make all the comparisons in the world, books, cars, whatever - that fact remains.
@Mats - so the fact a game doesn't degrade over time means a third party (e.g. Gamestop) who put nothing into creating the game, should be able to basically take someone elses work and sell it for 90% of the price just because they stuck it on a shelf?
Basically any grown up person who doesn't think they are entitled to everything can see why EA are taking the measures they are. Sure you may not like it, but deep down everyone knows it's perfectly justifiable.

My issue isn't with GameStop here, because when I can afford to I usually buy or pre-order new copies anyway. But I think when we start seeing ourselves being asked to pay $60 for less and less quality content that's actually on the disc on Day One, and being hit with $15 (or even higher) DLC that should easily have been on the disc the first time around, you'll see the other side of the story here. I'd much rather have the option to buy new or used and have equal footing to access a game's features and online content than I would have everything dictated by a mega-developer who only looks out for the old bottom line. And believe me, in the end EA and the other developers who follow this path will shaft gamers in ways GameStop never did.

The problem with the "used games" debate has to do with the longevity of the game. The more your game becomes dependent on a server or other remote connection, the less likely you are going to be able to play it down the line. Five years after a game's release, EA might just drop support for it, meaning you are left with a crippled game.
Used games do degrade over time. Discs scratch or get cracked, manuals are lost. The game becomes less valuable because it is incomplete. And new games are always prettier. However, there's no excuse for someone trying to sell you the metaphorical beater for a steep markup, when you then have to expend even more effort in parts/labor just to get it working. The problem with GameSpot is that it has such a severe markup for games with much less real value, and such a severe markdown when it is buying the games back again. It isn't bilking the developers, so much as its customers.

There's nothing wrong with those examples. "Degradation" is not the word to be using. It's "depreciation".

I still feel like EA partners would have been a better fit for them.....I mean based off of what we know about Bungie/Activision it sounds a LOT like EA/Respawn......so I am curious as to what they couldn't work out.....

Why do you think EA would be a better fit, by reasearching the ridiculously limited info we have as consumers/fans?
Let's all be real here: We think EA would be a better situation almost solely based off the amazing turnaround of EA and the horrible reputation activision has dug itself in recently due to the IW fiasco and Bobby "I Eat Babies" Kotick. Simple and plain. Let's not begin to even think we know the business side of this. All we know is the PR side (which obviously has an impact in the business side but not as much as we'd like to think, which is why activision is still rolling in dough, for better or worse). Activision apparently provided a deal that bungie believed better suited them.
All we can do is hope that the IW situation doesn't have an ancillary fallout elsewhere within the firm that could affect Bungie.

The Kotick went down to Kirkland,
He was looking a I.P. to steal,
He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind,
And was willing to make a deal,
When he came across this top Studio,
With a new franchise that they got,
The Kotick jumped on the corpse of the ward,
And said "Bunge Let me tell you what",

You probably already know it,
That I've lost my all-star crew,
But if you'd care to take a dare,
I'll publish a game for you,
Now you make a pretty good franchise, Bun
But the Kotick his due,
I bet unpaid royalty against your new I.P.,
'Cause I've milked a brand or two,

You wouldn't have caught me saying this a couple years ago, but what a loss not going with EA over Activision.
Also, I have no sympathy for anyone who whines over the fact that they bought it used and lost content. For a $5 difference, support the developer of the game your playing. I'd probably buy the code for additional content if the game was OLD and still kicking, not new.

The problems with the online code system are many; aside from the fact you won't be able to play online or access certain content by renting a game or purchasing a used copy, it also prevents friends from being able to share copies to try out. It also prevents folks without broadband access from being able to have the features that should rightfully already be accessible on the $60 disc they just paid for new. Multiple systems in your home means you must have a separate new copy of each game to be able to get all the features. And most worrisome is the fact that now developers will be able to fully dictate what constitutes a "full copy" on the original game disc; do you really want to have to wait for stuff that may actually be on the disc to be "unlocked" by an online code when you get it home? And what if it means there's less and less actual features and quality stuff on the disc to begin with, and their plans are to milk you bone-dry via downloadable content, which again, could and should have been already on the disc to begin with?
Oh yes, there's DEFINITELY a problem with this, and I think a lot of gamers share that opinion quite strongly. But it won't matter if the companies who begin practicing these Draconian policies end up turning a profit on them. The only way gamers will be able to have any say at all is to vote with our wallets and simply refuse to buy their products; otherwise we will have no right to complain about it. So it comes down to a choice, I guess, for all of us.

I honestly don't believe EA is any less 'corporate' than Activision. Both have had issues with developers over the years. Activision is what people are hearing about now, but it wasn't long ago that people we saying the same thing about EA.
It certainly doesn't surprise me that everyone came out of the woodwork to court Bungie after they left the Microsoft fold. That probably heard from Take Two and Sony. If I were Sony, I would have contacted Bungie.
It does somewhat surprise me that despite wanting independence, Bungie did ultimately partner with another company, but perhaps they realized distribution was going to be an issue going alone. I suspect long term either Bungie or Activision will regret the deal, but all will be peachy in the near term. And all eyes will certainly be on Bungie for their post Halo output.

Didn't Bungie leave Microsoft because they wanted to start a new franchise? What happens when they decide they want to start yet another franchise and Satan (I mean Kotick) tells them that they have to keep making sequels for the game. I am willing to bet that under their new contract, Bungie will have to release at least 7 games from this 1 franchise. I also bet that Satan (sorry, Kotick), will have another development team on the project ala Call of Duty, so we get a game a year.
