According to Siliconera, this week's edition of Famitsu outed Namco Bandai's current project: A frantic, Bayonetta-esque action game titled Knights Contract. You play as the titular, scythe wielding soldier named Heinrich, who must slay groups of gruesome enemies while protecting Gretchen, a witch who has cursed you with immortality. Why are you protecting the witch who put a curse on you? We have no idea. Probably because she's pretty, and you're a knight?
If that sounds like a winning combination, you can check out the debut trailer for the game just past the jump. Right now, it's only slated for a 2011 release on 360 and PS3 in Japan, but we think fighting monsters with agricultural hand tools is a concept the whole world will be able to get behind.

I don't care if she is pretty and has you cursed, that bitch better pull her own weight! I swear, if I have to carry her throughout the whole game Bodyguard style I'll throw my virtual self off the first cliff I come to.

I saw this yesterday on another site... I am really interested in this game at the moment. I hope it continues to hold my attention.

Eh, it looks okay... kinda like dmc mixed with darksiders or something. I'd rather have Bandai work with Cyberconnect2 to make a new console (ps3/xbox 360) dot hack game with multi-player... I know they tried last gen but not alot of people were using online multiplayer before this gen... It could have single player and multi-player like co-op and stuffs.

I don't usually comment on joystiq (or any site for that matter) but I really like your idea. Wish it would come true.

This game reminds me a lot of Nier's old footage but with a nicer engine. Enslaved, Namco's Majini game, and this all have the an AI-controlled cooperative theme. Very, very interesting. Add Resident Evil 5, Lost Planet 2, and Nier to the list and it is clear the direction Japanese developers are moving. Nice!

Agreed that it's a good direction, but they need to do it better. The AI team mates in Lost Planet are a joke, and RE5 was kind of the same way. I'm glad to see Japanese developers trying to do some different things that might better appeal to a gamer like myself, but I feel like a lot of those efforts haven't worked out so great thus far.

Ugh, I'm so tired of scythes. They're like the new bullet time.
That being said, that looks pretty great.

At least it's not the scythe of the incarnation of Death, stolen after killing the incarnation with it.
Ugh. I feel dumber for typing that.

The Devil May Cry series is getting tons of competition all of a sudden. It will be interesting to see what they pull out to try and stay on top.

Hrm... If you're immortal, could that mean that you can't be damaged, but the game's over if your charge dies? That would be an interesting mechanic, if handled skillfully.

I imagine this plays the "Scud the disposable assassin" card.
In other words, since the witch cast the curse, her destruction breaks the immortality spell and means you're dead.
I suspect the entire game will be a spin on the old "protect the character" missions we see in various games like this. You can't be killed, but the game is over if that character dies.

Am I the only one who thinks it's more Draksiders than Bayonetta?

Immortality means you live forever. Invincibility means you can't be killed. They are not synonymous.

@Mayor West. I too was surprised it was called out as a Bayonetta-esque game. Why Bayonetta over Ninja Gaiden, God of War, Dante's Inferno, Darksiders, or any other insanely violent hack-n-slash?

Shouldn't the title be "Knight's Contract"?

Immortality means you woun't age because the telomeres at the ends of your genes won't break down (theoretically). That won't make you bullet proof (or stab-proof in this case).

Wow, that logo is totally awesome. There's at least 3 ill-used Photoshop filters at play there!
