It only does everything... except what it use to. I hope they don't remove anything else from the PS3.

Yeah, the only thing they've added recently are a bunch of games and 3D blu ray support, while removing BC and Other OS. A fair trade for me, seeing how I'm using Linux right now and my PS2 is still next to my PS3. It does suck that they are removing things, though.

I see zero correlation with what you just said and this article except that this article had "PS3" in it.

And, given this is a video game blog, I'd expect a good number of those.

@Alexisonfire
And strangely enough, yours was equally unrelated outside of mentioning the article in passing.

I've noticed PS3s have been short in stock everywhere but Wiis have seemed plentiful, at least in these parts. I think most people around here who want one already have it.

Seems like Sony calculated well, though. Their console is selling like hotcakes and probably will continue to get more and more popular.

So removing this feature really didn't harm their reputation.

I loved otherOS and I'm not going to be buying a PS4, but the PS3 is truly a great way to play games and be entertained and I'm not surprised most gamers don't even notice the change. I wish people cared about things like broken promises, but they don't. What are they going to do, switch to Microsoft out of a need for ethical business practices? LOL. Nintendo is no saint either.

All the really noble companies that make consoles went out of business. I'm annoyed, but I'm not surprised.

Gimboa....you won't be buying a PS4? why not? I most likely won't be getting one at launch(unless its under $500) but I damn sure will be getting one....I have owned every console since the N64...don't plan to stop any time soon

I won't be getting a PS4 because I really liked the otherOS feature and feel it's a breach of trust that Sony removed it.

I still like the PS3 a lot. I think it's a substantially better console than the 360 and won't bother to compare it to the wii, but I have a personal problem with how Sony promised me a console with features and later forced me to choose which features I keep. Even if they had no alternative (which I dispute), I can't rely on them to plan ahead so they keep their word.

That's one reason why. It's hardly a surprise that this great console is extremely popular, as most people just don't care about this issue. Even though I'm polite about it, just look at how I'm downvoted (And I honestly don't mind that... if that makes you fell better go ahead).

If you're interested in why I found otherOS valuable, you can read my comment history where I discuss what I used it for... you'll notice I'm a flaming PS3 fanboy and have been for several years. At the end of the day, what matters is that I trust a PC I build myself to keep her features longer than the PS4 does. It's just a basic element of trust and honor. Sony lied to me. Their EULA probably covers their rears, but I have the right to just move on. Hardly going to make a dent in Sony's budget, but there's a reason developer firms are irritated at this action... it does hurt the community.

I've gone ahead and put a PC under my TV so I can keep browsing under linux from my couch, so it's much cheaper to use that for gaming as well. I'll keep buying PS3 games (except New Vegas... that's probably going to be better on PC), and I do think the PS3 is a lot of fun. But character matters to me.

I don't really understand the idea behind telling people to "STFU" on a discussion forum, but I think this is interesting.

My mother in law saw a Wii in stock and called me to ask if I wanted it. She was sure she had just identified a massive opportunity because of the idea they are hard to obtain.

I thought that silly crap ended a few years ago, but it hasn't. To some extent, a product being artificially scarce causes low information consumers to be herded to purchase.

Don't they constantly claim that there's no money made on hardware and that it's a waste of shelf space?

even if there is no money made on hardware(which I doubt is true nowadays), you still need people to purchase the hardware so that they can purchase the software.

more hardware sold+more software sold=profit

Not to mention a lot of people buy a lot of other items at the same time they splurge on the console. Gamestop wants you to be able to go to them for your PS3 because of all the other stuff you'll probably want to buy.

"Despite current shortages in the market, we expect to improve the situation shortly."

Or: “PS3 shortages are expected to continue until it outsells the Xbox 360."

I didn't realize PS3s were in such short supply this year. Is that because of the changeover to the slim, or something else?

Yah, you're right. There was a report (either here on Joystiq, or maybe Gamasutra or something) that Sony had finally gotten really close to making money on consoles sold, or breaking even, so the goal was to get the current models that still cost them a lot money to product off the shelves, and re-supply them with models that were cheaper to make.

There's any number of reasons for shortages

1) Item is in great demand that you can't keep it in stock
2) There's a part, yield, assembly, manufacturing problem
3) Manufacturer is shipping less due to the economy
4) Manufacturer is limiting supply (creating an artificial shortage)
5) Retailer/Consumer is purchasing less due to the ecomony

I doubt the issue is #1, but rather any combination of the latter. The economy is certainly a factor these days. We're almost mid year, which I'm not sure sales would be that significant anyway right now.

Nintendo is bound to see decreases in sales from the past, because sales were so high all along. They have nowhere to go but down. You can't sustain the highest sales indefinitely. Right now they're bundling/changing colors.

Sony was seeing a surge due to the slim model.

Microsoft hasn't really done anything of note hardware-wise.

I don't anticipate consoles sales increasing significantly til probably October. I suspect manufacturers are going to build up supply prior to then to meet any potential rush. Both Sony and Microsoft have new hardware options appearing. Noone knows what Nintendo may be doing this holiday. E3 should enlighten us.

I think that it's either a manufacturing problem with Sony, and/or the high demand for ps3 as the article states clearly. I highly doubt that Sony are limiting the supply, cause I figured that they'd probably only do that to increase the price of the ps3.

If the retailers/consumers purchase less, that would mean that the demand is decreasing and not the supply.

If they Nintendo and Sony ARE actually limiting supply, then I can see why they are doing so, it is because they are trying to benefit in the long run, because they are waiting for a recovery or boom in the world's economy, and maybe they would supply more at that time, because their would be more consumer confidence in the market. - But that's just my opinion.

What are these shortages? I see these consoles in every store.
The wii was pretty rare the first couple of years but anyone who is having problems finding a console just needs to go to any store in NYC that would typically have them.
