Being the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 fan that you are, you've no doubt read about the game's upcoming Onslaught mode DLC. If, for some reason, you haven't -- and didn't click on that link there -- here's the skinny: it will add up to four-player co-op to EA's latest military shooter, pitting human-folk against opposing A.I. foes in a rush to complete four different maps as quickly as possible. You'll want to do that because the mode will sport worldwide leaderboards for each of its four difficulty settings.
I played the mode a couple of weeks back at EA HQ. Even on the lowest difficulty setting my three fellow players and I were absolutely humiliated within seconds of starting our first level. The A.I. is unforgiving. Our initial embarrassment had what I believe is the effect DICE is after with this mode: really making squads work together. You won't make it 50 feet if you don't -- and if you all die it's game over.
The mode plays similarly to multiplayer Rush, the objective being (besides simply surviving) for your squad to capture one of several flags while progressing along a fairly linear map layout. In fact, as noted in the mode's announcement, those maps will be ones that already exist in the game, but they have undergone some tweaking, primarily seasonal and time-of-day changes. The maps are: Atacama Desert, Nelson Bay, Isla Inocentes and Valparaiso.
In action, the mode feels very much like the single-player component would, had DICE built four-player co-op into it. Unlike multiplayer matches, it relies heavily on scripted events and enemy spawning, with some arriving on-board patrol boats, depending on the map. I found that not only is using squad tactics and maintaining situational awareness key to staying alive, but getting through the stages really requires a well-balanced squad. I'm not saying it's impossible to play as four assault class characters, but things definitely went smoother when I played recon, clearing a path for my squad mates using artillery strikes and long-range sniping. Overall, it was a lot of fun and a good challenge.
Another note about the mode: unlocks from multiplayer carry over, so your character is going to be as well-equipped and capable here as he is in the rest of the game (and vice-versa, since you still accrue XP in Onslaught). This also means that as you advance in multiplayer, you should theoretically be able to place higher and higher on the leaderboards when playing with similarly ranked partners.
The release date for the Onslaught DLC is still officially "to be determined," but an EA rep I spoke with said he expects it to hit in early June. Pricing is yet to be decided, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if EA was waiting to see how well Modern Warfare 2's "Stimulus Package" sold at its price point before setting something in stone.

Holy crap is it! I own the game, but rented Red Dead Redemption ... and I've still been playing Battlefield over RDR! And I hope it's VIP too - afterall, wasn't that one of the benefits by buying retail?

I hope they don't charge $15. If I recall correctly, Battlefield took many jabs at Modern Warfare regarding their methods and pricing of DLC. If they charge roughly the same amount, it's pretty hypocritical.

i love BC2, but looking back, they have no reason to jab MW2 one bit. all their "free" maps were already on the disc. old maps with new modes shouldnt be a map pack. at least with MW2 (which i personally dont play) they actually give you some new maps in their map packs.

@8-bit.artist: Very good point. I remember when I finally bought the game that the "map packs" were immediately installed when I entered in my code. But I also notice two new maps that I never played before. Still, it was on the disc the entire time. *sigh*
They do have roughly 3 upcoming DLC that VIPs can download for free - so it's not all cheap. We just don't know what they are yet ...

they have the details for map pack 3, which you can see at the in game store are still old maps with new modes. one is on nelson bay SDM i believe, the other one is laguna alta rush i believe. so thats already 3 "map packs" that arent really map packs. all the other stuff, like the outfits and the new onslaught mode make having the VIP code pretty worthless.

very true however just like the core game you can't compare BC2 maps to MW2 maps. the only thing that stays the same during a match is objective locations but games are totally random. sometimes you run it, sometime you fly a chopper, sometimes you settle for an atv. But any real battlefield player knows that tree/wall/building isn't always going to be there to hide behind. the flow of battle is always changing. MW2 is and will always be about memorizing spawn rotations, quick reflexes and that perfect noob tube angle..

i rather them keep the community together with free non-maps than force you to spend $15 because your friends are doing it. + onslaught is a new mode you don't need it, so are the uniforms. you can be assured when you press search for a game and put the map selection to 'any' you'll have no worries.

Get it! Get it NOW!
Although, I'll have to admit, you won't like the first few hours in MP - only because you need to work your ass off to unlock the good stuff.
Anyways, whenever you get the game (on the PS3 that is), add me. PSN: J_A_R_HEAD2012

This sounds like so much fun, but eff you for making up pay for your multiplayer! MW2 comes with like 3 times the competitive maps, and mannnnny more modes, and an expansive co-op all for the $60 dollar entry fee. This is just getting ridiculous! Also they should have mentioned this earlier, cuz I wouldn't have traded in the game as single player was my only interest. Multiplayer is good, but I have no one to play with and going rogue sucks. Plus I bought it used and was not down with having to pay $15 dollars to get more than a demo of the multiplayer. The Killzone 2 beta had more multiplayer content than BF:BC2 had on the disc! And the beta was FREE!
I never thought when DLC was created that companies would abuse it to try and force your hand at market. I understand devs don't get cash with used games, but with all this extremely high priced dlc and lack of content on disc, I don't really feel sorry for them!
In my opinion: There are very few pieces of worthwhile DLC at a reasonable price. Just my opinion though. Some of it is fantastic and free though!

If you're just getting started, pick up kits from dead soldiers. That's how I got through the first 5 ranks. You see someone dead, you pick up his kit. Repeat until your kit is better than the ones you pick up.

I'm at 16/20 for this right now. I think a few of them have been team kills though. Much easier to blast the last wall of a house and destroy it than arm and defend until its destroyed

Thanks Atomic, I traded the game in though. Multiplayer was fun and i sunk a few hours into it, Ultimately without the VIP though it is lacking A LOT. I hope future games do not use this business model. I'm looking at you, medal of honor.
