Still waiting for that review from Eurogamer... They better watch their backs if they give another good game this year a 70...

They gave it a 100... does this mean the world is going to end?

I have to agree.

The best Mario game ever was easily Super Mario World.

I personally separate the Marios when it comes to dimensions.

2D, I prefer World only for the fact that it is less linear and more open ended then 3.

3 does have stronger level design but I just can't bring myself to love it more then World.

It seems like a similar scenario with Galaxy 1 and 2.

I respectfully disagree. Sunshine gets my vote, followed by Super Mario 64. Seriously, why people disliked Sunshine was beyond me. You could give Mario....

because it was way too childish and puny. Oooh water, that'll show em baddies. Squirt squirt squirt!

I'm glad they realized Mario is suppose to be the weapon, not hide behind a little pack that squirts water.

I'd take the reason seriously if we weren't talking about a Mario game. The puzzles, combat, and level design were all epic. I have never played SMG at length, but Sunshine set the bar ridiculously high for me.

I'm going to go ahead and say Yoshi's Island for the SNES was my favorite 'mario' game, though I realize it's technically not the same as all the mario games listed above.

Well since we're going there, Super Mario World is my favorite. Sooooo many friggin secrets, and alternate exits. Yoshi's island 2 was cool, but in a completely different way.

I liked 3 a lot, but i love me some Yoshi. Especially in different colors.

The controls, and to a lesser extent the camera, were what I disliked about Sunshine. That and most of it didn't really have that "magical" feel of Super Mario 64, or later Galaxy. Definitely wasn't a bad game, though.

I agree with everyone saying that the 2D and 3D games need to be separated.

As for what my favorite 2D platformer Mario game is, here's a rundown of how I rank the Mario games I've played so far:

Super Mario Bros 3 > New Super Mario Bros > SMW2: Yoshi's Island (Can this even be counted as anymore of a "Mario" game than the Donkey Kong Country games even though Mario is in it?) > Super Mario World > Super Mario Bros=JP Super Mario Bros 2/Lost Levels>US Super Mario Bros 2/Doki Doki Panic

Haven't played New Super Mario Bros. Wii yet, although I feel as if it'll take the DS game's spot. Would've included Mario VS Donkey Kong, but I count that as a puzzle platformer, unlike the other games.

As for the 3D games: Super Mario Galaxy > Super Mario 64 > Super Mario Sunshine

I don't consider any of these games bad and many of these are just barely better than the others in my eyes, except for Super Mario World; As in, I think Super Mario World is a much better game than Super Mario Bros.

Yeah, it didn't really get much hype... until these review scores.

Hype based on actual reviews - that's a pattern I'd kind of like to see for other games, to be honest.

(Lots of much-hyped games are really great, but not all; and hype based on previews where the previewer got to see one or two really good levels of the game - and not, say, the fact that other levels are less good, or that there are only a few levels in total and the developers claim it'll be 10 hours when really it's probably more like five... not so reliable.)

I'm not crediting Nintendo for an honest marketing strategy or anything (hello, they're a business, and 'honest marketing strategy' is an oxymoron). I mean, there were still previews and loads of trailers and stuff. I think it only really happened that there wasn't much hype for this game because it's a close sequel and whatever the previews said, everyone was writing it off as that; 'I'm sure it will be great but we've seen it all before', that kind of thing. Seems like they added enough stuff that actually, there IS something worthy of hype there...

I just had to get my credit card cancelled for a fraudulent transaction, so that plus international shipping delays means I won't get to play this game for at least a couple of weeks. :( Oh well, I'll live! And at least it'll give me enough time to play Trauma Team first. Not exactly in the same league there, but...

How can you say they milk Mario when it is really the only way they could have gotten the Wii in people's hands in the first place. Nintendo survived Sega, Sony, and Microsoft by allocating the shit out of their assets. It is not milking it is marketing. Yes there are a lot of games with Mario in the title, but there are still very few Mario games (this being one of them).

People were bitching about Mario being milked, but as long as the main Mario games are this great I don't care about the spin-offs, even though those are mostly pretty great too. This game is pure Nintendo magic, and just like it's predecessor it shows that a Wii game can get higher ratings than the biggest HD games. Mario remains king of the gaming world :)

I don't get where this milking comes from honestly.

Yes, the Mario name has been milked when it comes to spin offs but geez

There are more Mario Party and Kart games then the actually established 3d franchise.

Rehash my ass.

I agree with the dimensional separation. IMO:

World > 3 > Original = 2/LL > New Wii > Land 2 > 2/US > Land > New DS

64 > Galaxy = Sunshine

I'm happy for Super Mario Galaxy 2 being good but I can't buy the games anymore. Zelda and Metroid, yes but Mario...other then the RPGs; I've kinda lost interest to. Not saying anything bad...just Mario never hooked me. First game I played but not the first I loved.
