A recent EA Sports press release has announced that the developer's upcoming hockey title, NHL 11, will be the first game to feature the teams and players of all three divisions in the Canadian Hockey League. The CHL is a "development" league, featuring players between the ages of 16 and 20, many of which go on to play for major teams in the NHL. We might go so far as to call it NHL Jr., if we didn't think every one of its players could beat us within an inch of our lives with little to no effort.
The two parties penned a four-year agreement to include CHL teams in the NHL game franchise, meaning we can expect to see minor league players in EA Sports' hockey franchise until NHL 14. We might even see a few CHL players move on to the big leagues between games. Won't that be nice?

as a graphic designer i have to agree. that logo is painfully outdated. looks like a typical early to mid 90's logo as you said. hopefully this is just one Joystiq dug up and not the official one they still use. i don't watch hockey so i wouldn't know.

It is their current logo.
As a non-graphic designer can someone tell me why this is any worse than the logos used for the NFL, NBA or MLB...seems to me they were all designed in the 70's or earlier no?
I think you have to remember that the CHL is just an oversight entity of the three component leagues...you don't have this logo facing fans except for at the final championships which bring together the winners of the component leagues plus a host team.
Look at the logos of the component leagues..nothing exciting there either.

You'll see that the CHL logo takes elements from the 3 component leagues.

The Canadian Hockey League: just one of the many exciting new bonuses you'll get when you use your online code to unlock it!*
*Disclaimer - May not work with used copies, rental copies, copies you borrowed from your friends, folks with dial-up or no internet, and probably some other situations we haven't thought of yet. If not, SORRY SUCKERS! We got your money, and GameStop doesn't do refunds on opened copies! So shut up, play our games as we dictate, and take it like a man!!! Soon the online code strategy will enable us big developers to take over the world! Muwahaahaahaaaa!!!!
And thank you for purchasing our products. Remember, we're nothing without you!* Psyche, gotcha! - EA Sports
*Some gamers will recognize this phrase as the one now-defunct "hardcore" RPG and schmup developer Working Designs used to put on the last page of all of their game manuals. My, how times have changed with regard to how game companies think of their consumers.

a lot of hate considering how many unique games EA makes, and considering their sports titles routinely out-do 2K's, and considering how many gamers would unfairly take advantage of an open box return policy if that existed at EB or Gamestop.

Erie Otters fan here. I went to a few games in '01-'02 while going to Gannon. Definitely excited to see EA reaching out to the CHL and getting some awareness of the new blood.
I imagine we won't see the game until around late August or early September, shortly after Madden arrives.
I wonder, though, if the game will allow exhibition matches between the leagues... that'd be kind of weird to see the Penguins and the Otters go at it. (Of course now that it's typed out like that it sounds less like a hockey game and more like interspecies erotica.)

Everyone outside of the US (Minus Michigan, Maine, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Oregon) are more than likely not aware of the CHL.
Having worked for the Saginaw Spirit (AKA Stephen Colbert's team), let me just send out some basic info.
This is a developmental hockey league comprised of three leagues based on geographies.
This league plays a full schedule (72 games-ish), and follows NHL rules almost exactly. This is opposed to NCAA hockey, where there are only about 25 games, no fighting, and different rules.
Many, MANY great players have came through this league. Gretzky, Yzerman, Lindros, Crosby, Kane, Brodeur, Luongo.
Each year the winner of each league and the host team (rotates between each league) plays in a round robbin tournament called the memorial cup. This current year has Windsor from the OHL (feature the #1 draft candidate), Calgary (WHL) and Moncton (QMJHL). In addition the host team is from the WHL this year, Brandon (Maintoba).
Many players who get drafted from here go on to play in the AHL, which is kind of like triple A baseball in a sense. Junior hockey is not "minor league."
This is great news for fans of junior hockey like myself. I encourage people who like hockey to go through hockeydb.com and look at some of their favorite players; you would be surprised to see how many of them played junior hockey (as opposed to NCAA).
Tl;dr --> Junior Hockey > NCAA Hockey. Go Spirit.

wow NCAA basher much? College hockey is on the rise and a lot of good players are coming out of it. Zach Parise, Travis Zajac, Phil Kessel, Erik Johnson, Tomas Vanek, Ryan Miller, ect ect ect all came out of NCAA hockey. And BTW they play between 30 and 45 games in the NCAA not 25 games.

I would think it's awesome too see QMJHL ( Quebec Major Junior Hockey League ) involved into it, our team is The Halifax Mooseheads but the sad thing is i stopped caring for our team as alot of other people cause our team just sucked alot over time. i remember back in the good ol days ... Jean Sebastien Gigure ( played for Anaheim Ducks and now Toronto Maple Leafs ) was our Goalie.
anyways i think it would be cool if QMJHL was involved then have Brodeur or Gigure ETC play a NHL game but with their Juniors Jersey's but good for the CHL i'm happy for them.

Not as much bashing the NCAA as I am pointing out it's flaws.
NCAA does not have fighting nor NHL rules, and the games are almost always friday/Saturday doubleheaders. There is no emphasis on the travel aspect at al.
At the end of the day, the NCAA is an education first, hockey second system. I was just trying to make the point that the CHL is a better inclusion than the NCAA.
FYI, players in the CHL recieve a very small stipend, and thus lose all NCAA eligibility. However, players can migrate from the NCAA to the CHL with no penalty.
And lastly for education, for every season a player completes in the CHL, they get a scharship for one year to any Canadian University, so it's not like they are complete anti-school.

@Matthew,
I'm totally with you on the open-box policy, because I once worked for GameStop and know the lengths people will go to in trying to essentially get a "free game rental" by playing their fill for a few days and then returning a game. I have no problem with that at all, or with GameStop for enforcing it.
The issue that I and many other gamers have with this policy is that unlike before, it's going to become MUCH harder to "try before you buy" certain titles through rentals or loans between friends, and if you buy used you're automatically disqualified from being able to enjoy many features (including online multiplayer) that have always been givens for gamers. If you think the stink about EA doing this is bad over a few sports games, imagine what will happen if, say, Bungie/Activision impose the same limitations on Halo or Call of Duty, or any other major franchises with legions of fans are affected.
Everything I wrote above was tongue firmly in cheek, and not so much out of hate for EA as it is frustration and concern. Sure, they're "playing within the rules" as a business to milk the most money they can from their consumers, and if it works then the practice will spread like wildfire. The next level for these developers, I fear, will be in incrementally reducing the amount of content that comes on the $60 disc you buy, to the point that eventually the benefit of XBox LIVE subscriptions and PSN memberships will be rendered moot; you'll be paying through the nose for "map packs", levels, and tons of other content that easily could and should have made it onto the original disc. And what's to keep them from doing it now that essentially they've figured out this online code method of controlling what buyers have immediate access to?
Anyway, I just wanted to clarify. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm wrong about this; it's going to get worse.

If you buy the next crop of EA games used you do get a 7 day trial on that title for your gamertag - which happens to be GameStop's deadline to return a used game; so 'try before you buy' isn't that hard after all.
