Sony Online Entertainment, in an attempt to capitalize on the madness that stirs men's souls to purchase in-game items with real-life money, recently added three colorful Everquest 2 mounts to the Station Marketplace. For $25, you can purchase one of two versions of the mount: a Fierce Prowler, which improves its rider's combat abilities, or an Arcane Prowler, which boosts spellcasting abilities. You can check out a video of the mounts over on Shacknews.
SOE representatives claim the mounts were added to the storefront due to "player demand," which, if true, means the world has gone entirely bananacakes crazytown. We're going to go buy an economy-sized pallet of water bottles, board up our doors and windows, and go hide in our mattress fort.

I had no idea that people still play Everquest.

Well, to be fair, people paid the same in WoW. It's not like WoW is inherently more valuable than Everquest, it's just a far greater amount of people agree to waste their time and money there. Can't judge Sony for wanting to try something like this.

The WoW mount you can buy doesn't give you inherently better combat abilities just for owning it.

If EQ2 were so superior to WoW as you say it is, then it would have the player base. Which it doesn't.

I've played both as well and must disagree with you Arcaria.

Because drunken college frat boys and middle schoolers play Warcraft. Being popular does not make something better. This was also vastly popular about a decade ago.

I hear HPV is quite popular too. Surely that makes it good too.

You're all kind of dumb considering they're both practically the same damn game. :/
I'm sorry, but I'm going to wait for the real MMOs: Final Fantasy XIV, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and maybe Blizzard's next MMO IP if they ever actually show anything about it to the public.

EQ2 has a more mature audience. IE - Boring adults, wives, and grandparents. The game style usually doesn't draw in the younger crowd since it's slower paced, more group oriented, and doesn't involve ganking or PVP.
I didn't realize this was news to anyone. Kids play WoW, dorks play D&D, people with kids play EQ2, and machines play Eve.
And no, EQ2 and WoW have an incredibly different engine. Look at the system req sometime - Warcraft will run on any eMachine you can buy retail for the past 3 years.

25$ for just 1 incredibly ugly in-game model?
daym...can't believe there are ppl out there who buying such crap...
For that amount you can easily buy a good game and would still have a few bucks left.

If it worked in Warcraft, why wouldn't it work in EQ2 where the players on average are older, more OCD about collecting, and loyal?

This is where EQ2 and WoW differ. WoW cash sold items are purely cosmetic, offering no in game bonuses or advantages over other items. EQ2 items offer an advantage against a player who does not have it.
If your going to copy Blizzard, do it right.

ya. You're right, I rather pay $25 for something that does nothing. What have I been thinking all my life? I think I'll start buying video game cases instead of getting that crap that comes with a disc inside.

I think the point was merely that in a game where the playing field is supposed to be determined via in game decisions and participation in the game economy, they don't want to futz it up by letting richie riches come to some store, run his daddy's credit card and instantly have a badass character that surpasses what some other dude worked for in a legit "game" manner.
one played a game, the other bought a virtual barbie to take a dump all over the other person's accomplishment in the game.
at least in wow, the advantage is never given to the superficial richie riches.
that said, I tire of the MMO model. I hate it, it ruins games, it ruins the life of other genres which that game came from.
I'll eat my words if you ever see a Warcraft 4 RTS, or when fallout finally comes out with theirs, if they ever come out with a single player fallout game (shooter/strategy/rpg, that game gets around)

I started chuckling at the thought of people paying $25 for something so ridiculous then took a look at my gaming/collectibles shelf.
If you get $25 worth of entertainment out of an EQ2 mount, more power to ya. I wouldn't want somebody making fun of my spending habits.

Gaming collectables? LOL!!!!! Just kidding.
As an EQ1 and EQ2 Vet, EQ1 was vastly superior, simply because it was more hardcore (then again i only played it when there was only one expansion pack, and now there are like a bazillion, so who knows what it is like)
and crap like this didn't happen....
I'm going to say the same thing i always say about things like this. IF PEOPLE DIDN'T BUY THEM THEY WOULDNT EXIST. Like Bad DLC, Hookers, and crappy weight loss products. But the fact is: Hookers are fun, some people will buy anything for their favorite game, and most americans will do anything to lose weight.

While I agree that it's quite possible some people will get more value out of this than they could potentially get out of a console game that wasn't to their liking, I guess the aspect that's ridiculous is how little effort Sony had to put into releasing this and how much money they'll get in return for it.

@mtlyoshi9 Blizzard put about as much effort into the star horse. They had already made the model, they just put a different skin on it.

I hope people do know that EQ2 has been doing microtransactions long before WoW and that these mounts are only usable on Station servers.
