You're likely accustomed to hearing a certain pitch when purchasing a game at GameStop. It goes like this: "Would you like to buy the strategy guide for this too?" And, of course, you have your canned response. Something like, "The answer is still no -- just like last week and the week before that, and every other time I've been in this stinking store, Mike." Or perhaps just, "No, thank you."
Now, thanks to the wonders of the internet, you can play out this same dramatic non-transaction online. Valve has announced that digital versions of Prima strategy guides are now being sold through Steam. Readable inside or outside of the games, the guides include the expected tips and tricks. Unlike their printed counterparts, they also include videos.
To celebrate the launch of Prima guides on Steam, the first set -- including Splinter Cell Coviction, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Just Cause 2, Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age: Awakening -- can be purchased for $10 per guide, 50 percent off the normal $20 price.
In other news, we'd like to announce the continued existence of one digital strategy guide search engine. This innovative service lets users search for almost any game ever created and includes guides, videos and even historical information. The best part: It's absolutely free. Just follow this link and start searching!

How many people here use strategy guides? I don't. The only time I ever bought a strategy guide was for Super Mario 64 and GTA 4. It's a nice option on Valve's part at the very least.

I bought them when I was a kid. Now I try to avoid them. If I really need help in a game, the internet is free.

I am the same as Wiizer mostly. I only bought a handful of strategy guides in my life and all of them were for long rpgs. I buy them for the convenience of having them in hand and the artworks. I don't have a laptop so it is very convenient for me to have one sitting next to me. Don't know why you would buy it for a game like tomb raider though. That just takes a quick look at gamefaqs.

It seems to me that having the internet access required to use Steam would void all need for a $10 downloadable strategy guide. GameFAQs is only a few clicks away.

Layout, tactility, art, and professional writing is all I need to know that Strategy Guides > Internet FAQs.
Internet FAQs can be great, but if I'm really into a game and I want to experience more of it (NOT overcome challenges too difficult for me, or find out where to go next), Strategy Guides are the only way to go. A better bathroom reading material, I know of none.

I used to buy strategy guides. A few publishers posted really good details, but most skimped. Which is why I like user-written reviews; most of them are so over-nauseatingly detailed that you can't fail. The rise of people doing complete YouTube walkthroughs is really becoming a favorite, too. Honestly, I would not buy any guide any more because what's out there for free is often better and, thanks you the powers of YouTube, a real account of the game.

I'd also like to remind the makers of Prima Strategy Guides about a site called GameFAQs.com. And if you're into pictures in your guides, try the IGN and GameSpot(bleh) guides, which have all those pretty pictures you need to beat your games!

I thought the link in the post was going to lead to gamefaqs, not google.

This is a dumb idea. I do like strategy guides, because I like having the physical keepsake to go with the big games. yeah, I can get the same stuff online for free, but I like having the book to flip through. And you can get them half off at Amazon. But I see no benefit in paying for an online guide when I can get the same thing for free online.
I would like to see them evolve these online guides to 'truly gamebreaking'. They could implement a gps-like device that tracks your progress and offers up clues and hints based on where you are in the game, as well as locations of treasures you might miss, maybe an arrow you can toggle on and off to show you where to go. Maybe an option to switch to video mode where you can watch the guide play through the hard parts for you.

So you want someone else to play the game for you? The whole point of hidden stuff is the sense of accomplishment you get from finding it. That and extra points, but they're supposed to be earned points, not free points.

The ironic thing is the guides are being offered on the thing where every other guide is free, THE INTERNET.
You want an in-game guide? Hit Cntrl+Tab, bring up your favorite FAQ site, bam, your in-game guide.

You registered today, you made a single vague post that doesn't say anything specific about the topic you commented on, with a URL listed right below. I can't tell if you're a spammer or not.

I have never owned a guide, except for when I bought a magazine (ages ago) and got the Driv3r guide, which was quite helpful.

The strategy guide for L4D2 (in the screenshot) tells you to reload before picking up ammo. But L4D2 will give you the extra ammo needed to replace any empty space in your current clip. This tip would be good for L4D, but not this. Did they just copy this from an L4D strategy guide? And they expect people to pay for it?

I only have purchased strategy guides for RPGs, like many other people have said. I think the last one I bought was for Dragon Quest VIII for PS2. We only had one PC back then, and the guide was much easier to deal with. My friend bought the Fallout 3 special guide for reasons I don't know. All he does is brag about how awesome the guide is, yet never 100%ed the game like I did :-/ . YT and GameFAQs helped much more.

buy UNofficial strategy guides. I haven't since Resident Evil 3, but it was the funniest poker at the game, while providing everything there was to know. They even had a top ten of the funniest stuff in the city background. "mo muffins" and some metallica references were discovered in the pre rendered backgrounds of the city.

I like that these are available in game. Some games do not work well when alt tabbing, such as Mass Effect which crashes when I alt-tab so a strategy guide that I can access in game would be pretty cool.
I might be willing to purchase these every now and then if they were less then $5, and perhaps rather often if they were $2.50. I will not purchase one for $20 ever, and certainly not for $10. Some sort of low cost monthly subscription offering access to all the guides might be interesting.
