That, I have to say, was cool. I still remember seeing the original in 84 and it gave me shivers as a 10 year old kid. Fond memories of a days when computers were still magical and the world held mysteries and horrors.
Any how, enough waxing poetic. Pretty neat.

Good news. I'd rather see Alyx do a rendition of Ellen Feiss (the stoned-seeming switcher ad girl).

This would be great, but I won't install Steam until they move the "Steam Content" folder out of the Documents folder.

Wow, a picky mac user, nevermind you don't get the service at all.

Not picky at all, just don't like Time Machine or Dropbox backing up several gigs of data that I don't want backed up. There is a workaround for TM, but not Dropbox. Right now, I have to choose between Dropbox sync or Steam. Steam loses, which is a shame because I loved Steam on my PC. There is no reason to put that folder in the Documents folder. Thankfully Steam is working on a fix, so I will wait for that.

Tom, that is the workaround for Time Machine, but Dropbox will follow symbolic links. So, unfortunately, Dropbox will still sync the Steam Content. The real problem is that it never should have been put in the Documents folder from the start.
But as I said, Steam says they have a fix, but there is no clear timetable.

@HighFiveJesus: Think of it as photoshop putting a massive cache into a folder that can only take so many gigs, that couldn't be relocated. On windows, putting the steamapps folder in Program Files isn't really an issue, but putting steam crap into a directory that other apps use frequently, and at that something that the user doesn't need to access, is kinda lame. Application Support is built for this kind of stuff, and Valve isn't using it. (yet)

If I were you I would be blaming dropbox for not giving you t he choice to exclude folders from being backed up.

Sorry, but I'm confused here... but what does DropBox have anything to do with the Documents Folder in OS X? DropBox has it's own directory. None of my Steam stuff is getting synced via DropBox, so I'm scratchin' my head on this one.

dastranger, in order to make Dropbox more useful, many OS X users will put a symlink to the Documents folder in the Dropbox folder. This way whenever I edit or add anything to the Documents folder, it instantly syncs with Dropbox without having to make sure the file is in the Dropbox folder. It makes Dropbox an extremely useful tool that I could not be without. It would be nice if Dropbox had an option to be more specific about what to backup, but that is not really how the service works.
Let me be clear, I love Valve, and I am very happy to have Steam on the Mac, but I need to wait to install it until they move the Steam Content folder. Dropbox only allows 2 gigs of storage for their free accounts and Steam Content will fill that with one game. The whole reason I am a bit upset is that the Documents folder is supposed to be for documents, not games. Steam says they wanted the Steam Content to be very visible so it was easy to delete. However, putting it the Documents folder makes no sense, since it clearly is not a collection of Documents.

Why not just put another folder in Documents to hold everything what was previously in Documents, and point dropbox to that? It's not as elegant as simply having a documents folder, but it allows dropbox to continue functioning well for you while allowing you to use steam.

Actually they gave a very good reason as to why they put it into the Documents folder. It is explained here: http://store.steampowered.com/news/3857/ in case you'd like to read.
But, as you said, they are working on a "fix" so you'll be steaming it up soon.

@Not THAT Matt: We had good reasons long before Steam came around, and would continue to without it. You'd think that Valve taking Macs seriously would sway some mindsets, but apparently some PC users seem threatened.

Unless you want to play a Half-Life episode whose sequel is on the backburner while valve churns out more tired zombie games, don't tease yourself with the awesomeness that is episode 2.

Oy. I love valve's "zombie games". Anyway, not having a sequel yet does not diminish how good this game is in any way.

I'm hoping so. Have you tried the counter strike beta? They brought a bunch of engine updates and little tweaks to CSS. The game feels a lot more modern now.

Behold... the source of anti-Microsoft sentiment. That commercial. Everything else has been twisted to fit that view of the world, though Apple has proven themselves no better.
But, whadda I know.

Except the commercial predates Microsoft's monopoly of desktop computers. They were referring to IBM.
