@ Windmill

Thank you for the first half of your comment so I can move on to the post.

Thank you for posting the interview, great stuff and looking to hear more about Insomniac.

For me, my first console I owned was a Gamecube so I could own and finally play every CONSOLE Zelda game (I picked up a Gameboy Player so I could play A Link to the Past). Sure, I had friends with PS1's/PS2's, but there was a connection - and substantial time investment - I had with the Zelda series that was more than the "power" the competition brought. My next console was a Wii, again, so I could play the SAME FRIGGIN' game (Twilight Princess) but with Link right-handed. Good times...

When looking/debating between a 360 and a PS3 a year ago it was a toss up because most of the games were released on both consoles. In the end it came down to what my friends were playing on so we could share games, online, etc. and, for me, that happened to be the 360. Yeah the PS3 has more power, longer cycle (*TBD), Blu Ray, and everything else, but the CONNECTION with friends tipped the scale to the 360. Oh yeah, price didn't hurt either. What's really unfortunate is that I got a Blu-Ray player for Christmas (wait, how is that unfortunate? Keep reading...) but was able to return it for store credit and "upgraded" to the PS3 for NO OTHER REASON than it only cost me $85 out of pocket to have a blu-ray player that plays the exclusives I was missing. Now don't get me wrong, Uncharted, inFamous and Ratchet and Clank are all incredibly fantastic games (tips hat to Drake, Cole, Ratchet), but IN MY OPINION so is Batman Arkham Asylum, Assassin’s Creed and Bioshock all of which I are/were original IP, single player games that were multiplatform and I was able to borrow from a friend before spending any money myself having already invested in Gears, Mass Effect and Left 4 Dead. Advantage multiplatform.

The ONLY part I don't like about this split is that Ratchet stays with Sony. Being a new member of the Ratchet and Clank fanclub it makes me sad to think Insomniac won't be able to do something like Sony did with the God of War franchise and put out a Ratchet and Clank: Collection. As someone that loves established franchises (remember, Zelda, Gameboy Player, right-handed Link) it makes me sad inside to think that day would never come. Actually, it makes me sad inside and out. A LOT.

So, yeah, in the end, I glad for the move specifically so I can share the Insomniac games to come with my 360 brethren, but indifferent the rest of the way because I am very fortunate not to have to worry about what console has an exclusive... a luxury I know a lot of gamers don't have.

Alright! Multiplatform is good for all gamers because companies have to make a good product in order to sell. No fanboys allowed!

True, I don't wish any system to fail, competition drives innovation and quality for both consoles and their developers.

I don't think is a loss for Sony or a gain for Microsoft but a win for gamers.

"And to those of you who think God of War and others come out solely for PlayStation b/c they love you so much, they really do it for the extra money they get from Sony for making it exclusive."

:/ Actually Insomniac is close to sony, so they get extra funding from Sony and help from Sony and in returned made thier games exclusive, but they always wanted to go multiplat at some stage and they can do.

The god of war statement doesnt make much sense, God of war ""IS"" Sony's, not because the devs love sony fanboys :/. Its a first party title, theres no love involved, whether or not they loved sony fanboys makes no difference, it would still be on PS3.

Devs don't care, yes, but the console companies do. I like exclusives. Not for a fanboy vs fanboy cause, but for personal preference and having a choice. What would be the point of having the 360 and PS3 if they had the same exact games? I see what you're saying, I'm not arguing that, but I'm just going along the topic.

Gamers would just choose one console and stick to it, otherwise, our consoles will satrt getting silly additions to make up for the lack of exclusives. Built in toaster, PS3s attached to Bravia TVs, Xboxes with Word Processor...

I think a better example would be the original Bioshock.

The original Bioshock was pretty much a timed exclusive so that they could not only get a big fat sweet exclusivity bonus check, but could also still make money off of the PS3 version down the road.

Hm-- That's good for Insomniac and they've still talked of doing exclusives for the PlayStation 3, so it isn't as if they've blown Sony off and though Sony is bummed they're losing a solid developer, as far as exclusives go, well.... But. I don't think Insomniac is particularly impressed with the Xbox 360 Hardware. Their games have been solid on a console that's been renowned as "complex." The Xbox 360 will feel like a walk on the lake because it'll be so simple. But, Insomniac can't let that get to them, or their game quality will drop. Its like an experienced composer going to work at a High School. You let it get to you and the influence engulf you, then when you go back to compose, you've lost your edge.

I don't necessarily believe that going multi-platform is "good for the industry" as is stated. It just takes your game to a broader audience, but companies suffer. Look at the PC and its going. There aren't any exclusives for it anymore really. Developers have grown tired of it i.e. Epic Games and have moved on to consoles to reach a broader audience. (Yet they still remain Xbox 360, doesn't make any sense to their logic) but, gaming consoles thrive on Exclusives. Xbox 360 gamers are losing interest to the PS3, because there aren't any exclusives. When they do get one, its timed and eventually the game shows up on the PlayStation 3. With Sony, its a different story. If the game is announced multi-platform before its release, then it goes. But once its locked down, its locked down. (Final Fantasy XIII vs Metal Gear Solid 4). For Insomniac, its good business because they'll make more money because instead of an option of selling to 36 million gamers, they can sell to nearly 80 Million. But for the industry, that's not good. Sony's console sales could deminish as attention is drawn to Microsoft, or in the case of Bungie, sales could stear toward the PlayStation 3, gamers finding "Well, its not exclusive to the Xbox anymore, I'll get a PS3." Microsoft loses its edge." My point is made, but its tough to really explain. So, good for Insomniac, but, could be dangerous for Sony. Good for Bungie, but could dangerous for Microsoft.

I think if you actually bother to research you'll find quite a few 360 games that are not on PS3 and show no signs of turning up there.

Just out of interest, where's your evidence of any of what you just said? Seems to me that the two are STILL neck and neck in sales even though the 360 has been out almost a year longer.

You also seem to assume that everyone is waiting to get a PS3, I have one which I only got about 4 months ago after having a 360 since launch - but I'm still as interested in my 360 as I ever was. Some people actually do prefer the 360 you know, it's not just a case of it's "hanging" on to users.

I just hope it's a new IP. I love ratchet and somewhat like the Resistance franchise, but new IPs by talented developers are always welcome in this age of too many sequels.

Can't wait for this new IP from Insomniac Games on both PS3/Xbox 360. I just hope its a platformer and not a FPS like Resistance Fall of Man. Would really like to see something like Ratchet from these guys maybe something mature?

@ Voshempa

*That is a great question. If there were no exclusives what would the point be of owning a PS3 over a 360 and vice versa.*

And you use this as a REASON to SUPPORT why you LIKE console exclusivity?

Why did people upvote this? Don't you get what you're saying?

"I like watching my TV. But this TV has the feature of being able to be controlled with a remote. I like having a remote. But this other TV can be watched in color. I like watching my TV in color. So then, if both had the same features, I wouldn't get to choose between the two of them. Instead, I could just own one TV that had both features. Therefore, I like exclusive TV features. It gives me choice."

.... uh, *what*?

You would rather have the choice to pick between systems to get features? So for the sake of having "choice", you lose. You get choice, it just means you get to choose between features, instead of having all of them in a single console. Is the fun of choosing which features you like more worth not being able to just buy one console with ALL of the features?! Seriously. Not only this, but in reality, having a console that had all of the features gives you MORE choice, since consumers can have more options in how they use their console they buy, and also have more money to spend elsewhere.

This is not to say that I dislike console exclusives. It is just this particular reasoning for why they are good was so awful I had to say something since people had actually upvoted it.

I myself like console exclusives, but not for the nonsense idea of "choice". Rather, console exclusives foster healthy competition. As a consumer I like good video games. Having competition between systems for exclusives means they each want to have the best exclusives since it sells consoles, and thus chug lots of money into amazing games. Its just another added layer of competition on top of the inter-competition between game developers themselves.

Some of the most amazing games I have played have been first-party games. If Nintendo cut their first-party development parties, imagine all of the amazing games we would never have played. And if Nintendo had to share its games, you better believe they wouldn't have made them, or put the same amount of effort into them. I'm personally willing to make the sacrifices to my gaming options to play the once-in-a-lifetime game like Ocarina of Time.

I'm happy for Insomniacs. It no longer makes any sense for independent studios to stick to one platform, unless they're getting big huge bucks to promote that single platform. Insomniac did more than enough to pay back Sony for their support of Insomniac by sticking with them during PS3's rough period. And I'm glad that they're not abandoning their Sony franchises.

Here's hoping it isn't in the FPS genre. Resistance is alright, but when it's sharing space with half-life, halo, call of duty, bioshock, killzone....being "alright" no longer cuts it.

Exclusives tend to be better games in my opinion, the developer only needs to focus on one hardware unit. Take Uncharted 2 for example, the developer could take full advantage of the hardware and not worry about the shortcomings of others.

Also I disagree that the audience is the same on the PS3 as the Xbox 360. There is a reason why the PS3 is performing a lot better in Europe and Japan - because the console is targeted at a different gamer.

Personally I am going to out on limb on this and say something happened in the relationship with Sony and Insomniac. Please hear my opinion before bashing me...

Why would someone who has had a solid relationship with Sony *I think 14 years, give or take a few* finally decide to go multiplatform? Why didn't they go early on when Xbox had such a big lead against Sony if "money" was the issue? I know it can't be because the 360 has a larger base, Sony is closing the gap really fast and if anything is a HOT item right now.... My theory is its creative differences... Sony owns Rachet and Clank and Resistance... The deal with EA even though its solely for one game gives Insomniac ownership rights... I think as a studio Insomniac is done giving away franchises and perhaps when they asked if they could own the franchises they created Sony said no and they said fine we'll go multi.. I just hope this doesn't turn into another Infinity Ward vs Activision drama...
