We're wary of video game-derived movies, which is a pretty fair stance for a genre that has Mortal Kombat sitting unchallenged atop its pinnacle, but the effort to bring Mass Effect to the big screen sounds legitimate enough to pique our interest. THR reports that the film rights have been picked up by Legendary Pictures (the studio behind 300, The Watchmen, The Dark Knight and the still-in-development Gears of War). BioWare's Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Casey Hudson will reportedly be brought on as executive producers. Mark Protosevich, the writer behind I Am Legend and the upcoming Thor, is in talks to pen the adaptation.
The question, of course, is who will play the game's lead, Justin Shepard, the brave space adventurer that bears a striking resemblance to a slightly handsomer, moderately more chiseled version of Joystiq's Justin McElroy. The author of this post thinks the choice is clear.

Mass Effect is one of those properties, like uncharted, that makes perfect sense for a movie. It needs to be done right and that's the biggest concern. The new PoP actually looks good but it hardly resembles the game at all.

Considering Uncharted is basically an amalgamation of the Indiana Jones subgenre of action-adventure films realized in video game form, how is it perfect for a film adaptation? Wouldn't it just be better to make a new film in that genre rather than potentially spoiling a great game?
That's the same logic that got us Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game.
"Gee, that film had tons of fighting and ridiculously dressed characters, let's make a game out of it!"

Me!
I play Mass Effect with the default shepard because he looks like me. My fiance wanted to know why he, Shepard, "looks like you."

Are you by chance Mark Vanderloo, the guy that Shepard was modeled after? http://ui07.gamespot.com/710/shepardreallife_2.jpg
He'd be great for the role if he didn't have such a thick vaguely-Dutch accent.

My Shepard looked vaguely like Donnie Wahlberg (I think), maybe he can play Shepard:

Or we can fall on that easy Matthew Fox one, if he'd be game for such a meaty role.

Hello everyone, I'm from the future. Here is a quote from the director and writer, stated a week before the Mass Effect movie comes out.
"Yea I didn't bother playing through the games. I had my assistant play through and tell me some things, it's just if I started playing id get too addicted and I dont have time for that. Just know I saw the back of the box, so im ok."

Its not a surprise, and probably one of the better attempts to move a game to the big screen. Where the story comes from will be interesting to see (game, books)... whether Shepard is even the main character, I could see Capt. Anderson's back-story making a fine movie too. Casting will be debated endlessly with no concensus, so maybe it would be better to work on the fringe of the game world.

First they will need to create theaters that have consoles at the chairs that allow you to choose conversation choices and actions. The choices with the most votes will determine how the movie progresses.

Javier... not. Henry Cavill from the Tudors looks the part though, especially in the first season of the Tudors.

ppl forget about resident evil, they've made 3 full length features and one animated CG movie. and a new one is currently being made.
It is by far the most popular game series which has been adapted into a movie.

have to disagree. Resident Evil series was sweet. It doesn't represent the game to a T, but it's still a great set of movies that well outdoes the acting of the first three games easy.
Wing Commander was good too. Not saying these are oscar films, but they're entirely watchable.

If anyone knows who Tomas Plekanec is from the Montreal Canadiens should know that he looks remarkably like Sheppard:

sadly i don't think it will work. main plot line is rather generic. The main reason I like mass effect is the depth of characters. with the time limit avaiable of probably 2 hours at most. getting people up to speed in the setting and the main character motivations will take too much time that we don't get the deeper part of the crew's stories. also i want a female shepard just for a change in scifi staples and not the i wearing a space bikini kind i want my hulking armor shepard.
i think they were better off adapting KOTOR to a movie. you don't have to set the stage as much and can focus on the charcter interactions. only problem is the twist will be ruined as everyone in the community will know.

It's the only time I will say Sam Worthington should be cast in a role, but he should play Shepard. His empty, aloof demeanor make him perfect as an avatar of the audience.
On the other hand, I DO want a female Shepard. And for her to boink with Liara. But I'm not betting the farm.

My vote is for Henry Cavil from The Tudors series. Dude looks like he could be Shepard's twin. Good actor too!
