Update: Welp, it's confirmed. J. Allard, along with Robbie Bach, have officially departed Microsoft.
According to the Wall Street Journal, J Allard's rumored departure from Microsoft is only the beginning of the story. It's apparently part of a planned managerial shake-up at the company's Entertainment & Devices Division -- which includes both Microsoft's Xbox business and its Windows mobile group -- and as a result of stiff competition from Apple and Google in the mobile space.
The WSJ posits that Microsoft could institute changes at the management level as early as this week. We'll keep you posted.

Get rid of the biggest visionary in the company and re-org the only successful consumer product team.
Interesting strategy.

That's what Ballmer does.
He breaks what isn't broken and if something's already broken, he says he fixed it.
The definition of "fixed" being that instead of two parts, it's in a billion pieces.

All i will say is that no matter what happens w/ this group of people, none of them will have to worry about money issues seeing as how these were MS first investors in the company back in the mid seventies & still part of the company.as for what's going on all companies go thur this, every now & again . as for J Allard quitting cause one of his many ideas were not realized is no reason to quit a great company that is always at the forefront of great ideas & concepts .would be the dumbest move ever, stick around J.

Maybe Microsoft desires a better integration among its mobile and xbox group. If the current management cannot accomplish this, they do need the managerial shake-up to bring new ideas. I am personally looking forward to playing Halo on my future windows phone 7 someday

That picture should answer your question, "Why didn't my parents invest in or join Microsoft in the early years?"

To quote a classic film I once saw: "NERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDS!!"
That picture is a living, breathing, stereotype. From 1977 to 1985, ALL nerds looked like that... Now a days, they manage to blend in somewhat well. They've at least tried to take a stab at being fashionable, in the past few decades. And a good portion of them discovered an invention called the "Razor blade". Sunlight still seems to frighten them, though.. :)
And also, seeing that picture now makes me miss the late 70's/early 80's all the less.

People always look at these things as the worst thing in the world.
How do we know there isn't another great mind out there like him? Perhaps someone very talented whom is unknown and relatively new.
Change is sometimes a good thing, and in this case, we'll just have to sit and wait until we see what happens next for Microsoft in the upcoming 5+ years.
