Well, I haven't played the game and though the book is translated (?) it wasn't all that "special."

Or not. You should play the first game. I haven't read the book personally, but I have played the hell out of the first game. Hyped? Sure, overhyped? Naaaah, not by a long shot.
Please keep in mind that the requirements for a compelling game and a compelling book are entirely different.

Book was ok and it was different tales then the game. The game had mostly all those mixed + a main story. It is one of my favorite RPG. I started back with Hero Quest and The Witcher was worth every hour I spend on it.
So for the fans I don’t think it’s overhyped or that anyone should skip those.

What?! The game was great... I didnt even finish it, but loved what I played. To me, only needed changes where a whole, unified open world, and more action oriented combat, ala Zelda or Fable.

I absolutely LOVED the first game. The storyline was definitely the best part of it, combat was meh but I endured it to continue through the story. Really excited for this.
