They also offered a generous pre-order bonus at Gamestop, another sign the game might not be that good.

Yes, but the game still sucks. The bonus just looks like it is trying to draw people in. Also, and correct me If I'm wrong, I think people didn't think RDR would do well either.

If you have to subtitle your game "The Espionage RPG" just so people know what it is, you know you're in trouble.

They did that in order to get people off the street who haven't heard of it to buy it, because they know that almost no one who has read the reviews is going to buy it. Because it's not a good game.

@WINterfang

It does when the publisher knows that the game in question won't be able to benefit from any positive word of mouth. The same thing happens with movies. Not expecting good reviews? Advertise the hell out of it and hopes that drowns out any bad reviews.

Aaaaand there it is. Ever since they started ramping up the publicity with the recent videos, and I saw how awful the combat looked and how janky the animations, this was a big 'no thanks' for me.

I just can't believe that they didn't take that time when it was delayed to polish it. It's just not good when a whole paragraph of the review is dedicated to telling you it fundamentally doesn't work. Yeesh.

I was REALLY looking forward to this, and then I was REALLY hoping it wouldn't suck. Maybe I'll still pick it up when it hit s $20...

I came to the same conclusion too, watching videos of gameplay.

I went looking for videos of it lately trying to get myself psyched for it, and I just couldn't after watching it. Everything it's doing has been done (granted, that's no an indication of a bad game, IF they actually do something new with it or improve upon it), and even their claim of first spy rpg isn't even true (first modern day, yeah). And don't tell me that crap about you have to play a game to know if it's fun - so many people feeling turned off by the videos and it turning out to stink is an indication that it's not true.

Anyways, there doesn't seem to be an improvement on existing conventions, and the different game mechanics don't even mash well (still lack polish) - shooting sucks, melee sucks. The whole game just look like an Xbox original game.

Yeah this doesn't bode well for New Vegas, I really hope New Vegas is good, since I fell in love with Fallout 3, but Obsidian's track record isn't the best.

If you take out the spy theme and replace the name Alpha Protocol and change it to fallout 3, most of the description could fit. The combat being awful and overall jankiness fit FO3 to a tee

@ Nok-su-kow

Since New Vegas is running off of the same engine that Fallout 3 was I'm not too worried about it gameplay wise. And when it comes to the story, that's the least to be worried about as they tend to be really good. Even being unfinished (Which was Lucasarts fault and not obsidian's) Kotor 2 still has some of the best writing in the entire star wars EU. Kreia is probably one of the most well written characters I've seen in an rpg.

Not to mention that half these guys are people who worked on the original fallouts, so NV has a chance of being what Fallout 3 should have been.

Same here brah. So much potential so tragically wasted. I still want to pick it up and try it, but if Justin is accurate, that'll happen during a Steam sale or something.

I don't like bad games; they don't benefit neither the player, neither the developer. They're just a waste of time. I wonder how different/better the game would have been if those 6 months were used to polish it.

My heart aches for you, A.P. Thanks for the iPod touches, though.

@Tony you could have just said you didn't like Fallout 3. Because really, both being bad does not count as a common bond. AP is a linear choice based spy thriller with ME1 style combat. Fallout 3 is a post apocalyptic RPGFPS that has more sidequests and random stuff than it does main quest, they're really very different

@ Nok-su-kow

I get what you're saying and agree, but again that blame lies on Lucasarts for pushing the game for a holiday release rather than giving Obsidian another 6 months like was needed. Storywise it would have been set and instead the plot was janky and unfinished, but what was there was really good, not to mention the writing gave a pretty good deconstruction of the standard star wars morality.

Was just pointing out that story is usually Obsidian's strong point. Kotor 2's problems weren't their fault.

I just downvoted you for pointing out that you were downvoted.

You were probably downvoted for insisting something was someway without having a first hand experience with it. Just because you turned out right doesn't mean you didn't deserve to be downvoted.
