Why wait for E3 to announce your biggest game of next year, right? First, Sony goes and reveals Killzone 3, and now Nintendo has revealed North American release plans for Pokémon Black and White for DS. The next generation of Pokémon will be released in spring 2011.
There are few known details about this new Pokémon game, other than the existence of a new city environment, the designs for the new starter Pokémon, and the fact that the Black and White versions are supposed to represent a "rebirth" for the franchise. Today, along with the North American release window announcement, Nintendo revealed that the box art for Pokémon Black will feature the legendary Pokémon Reshiram and White will feature Zekrom; as seen above (via Pokemon.com). So, you can start planning your purchase based on your preference between two freaky winged things.

Zekrom will be Dark/Steel type, Reshiram Ice/Flying?
If pics indicate anything. Would love to hear some news on what part of this game dictates "rebirth" though. Aside from the weird view change, that is.

Man, I hope they're just not Dragon/Flying or something that's got a double weakness to Ice. Seems like half the damn Legendaries in the games are weak against Ice . . .

I agree, not much of a rebirth.
What I would like is an open world RPG developed Western style, without random encounters and 3rd person perspective or something. With a mmo-ish online component. That would be awesome.

Yet it will still sell well despite that, because everyone loves sequels.

Dark/Steel = fail VS Aura Sphere, Close Combat
Ice/Flying = fail VS Rock Slide, Stone Edge
EFFFFFFFFFFFFF 4X weaknesses to common attacks. I hope that's not what they turn out to be.

Stormchaos, Cheater,
Ya, I get that NOW. When this article was released (5/28/10), that information wasn't released yet though. That was my guess based off the photos.
Why are you commenting on a 2 month old article?

... this article was posted BEFORE they put that information on Serebii. Serebii has it now, I know this. At the time this article was printed (5/28/10), this was the only information about them. Their picture. No other information was released at this time. NOW, much after, information has been released and sites like Serebii have reprinted it.
Also, Serebii is a very very unofficial pokemon site. It's not own, maintained, affiliated, or has anything to do with Nintendo or GameFreak. It's just a *VERY* well organized and run fan site.

Bidoof's Unaware ability completely negates the enemy's Swords Dance, Calm Mind, Iron Defense, and so on.... I'd love to see a better Pokemon make use of that.

We all know they're going to use the same formula. I'm too old for pokemon anyway, but will gladly revisit the franchise if they'd just take it in a new direction (e.g. real-time combat that doesn't require that I jack up my pokemanz with HMs).

They've played turn-based combat to death already. I think real-time combat along the same vein as, maybe, Smash Brothers (e.g. 2D fighter-esque) or a D20 system (e.g. NWN, KoTOR, DA:O) would be a welcomed change of pace. They can keep all of their paper-rock-scissors, their 4-attack moves, etc. and simply add the need for some skill.

Because Pokemon is a turn-based game. It doesn't make any sense to make it realtime. Maybe a time gauge or something at most. There's lots of changes the series' needs; the obliteration of HMs, being able to re-IV your Pokemon, make breeding less tedious, more world to explore (for a game based on wild animals there is almost no wilderness to adventure in), changing up the gym format (tournaments with powerful trainers that use all different types of Pokemon like in battle tower makes more sense than gyms you can one-Pokemon your way through) ...
I wrote a huge document about this once, but I doubt anyone here is interested in that.

They need to make changes sure, but keep the core the same. And that core is the turn-based battles and all the stats, movesets and stratedgy that affect the outcome of battle.
I think this 'rebirth' is making the game for an older audience. Original Pokemon fans have grown up, many of the people you see on Smogon and GTS are in their late teens/early 20s. These scary looking legends reflect that.
