That's some pretty extreme anti-piracy measures.

You hear that, Ubisoft? They beat you.

...there's phone numbers in the Antarctic?

That's what I was wondering. I'd have assumed that all the researchers down there would be using sat phones instead of trying to lay undersea cables.

Well, it is a continent, and their are people who live there to do research.

Actually Xav, the article and the topic was interesting enough for me to read the entire article (which I rarely do) so as a stark contrast to the original post I'm going to say I found this article very informing.

You can stop mindpunching him now.

And yet people chastise Apple for wanting a controlled ecosystem for iPhone software and wonder why they do it.

This is not why they do it I'm afraid. It may be an added benefit, but the reason is so that all apps must be approved, so stifling competition and forcing devs to use Apples products. I dare say a jailbroken iPhone would be just as susceptible to this kind of attack.

Did anyone even read my comment before downvoting/replying? Of course a Jailbroken iPhone would be just as susceptible. I was saying that the App Store *wasn't*.

This wouldn't be affecting the Windows mobile users if they didn't jailbreak their phone either. This was PIRATED software, meaning the phone had to be cracked, unless Windows mobile is like the Dreamcast and comes hacked.

Yes, in this case it was pirated, illegally-distributed software. But a perfectly legit-looking program could very much do the same. Software on mobile phones have the greatly added risk that the software could easily dial out and cost users lots of money, a risk not found on PC platforms. All I was saying is that it's one, large level of risk that the App Store doesn't come with, and yet people berate Apple anyway. That's like going after the government for requiring seatbelts because they're uncomfortable.

If you're trying to justify Apple's App Store restrictions (itunes is under investigation for anti-trust currently by the FCC) by using this story, you won't be able to make a very good argument with it...

iTunes Music Store is under investigation, since there are some reports of Apple bullying record companies into not supporting other services, and the nature of music being device-agnostic but standard iTunes Music Store purchases are locked to the iTunes/iPod platform. I'm not going to defend Apple on that one, but please get your facts straight. The App Store falls under the same marketing laws as XBLM, PSN, WiiWare, etc, and has the same restrictions and freedoms as those services (possibly less - I know XBLM Indie Games has a similar $100 publishing fee, don't know about others, but I know Xcode is the only free, first-party development kit for any system).

I wasn't inferring that the anti-trust investigation had anything to do with the App Store...

Anti-Terrorism game? If it's british then that probably involves playing as Nick Griffin as airport security "randomly" searching brown people

Relax, I'm british, it's cool.

Well the prince of Nigeria still owes me 9 million Euros after I wire-transferred him $10,000 USD.

That was last week, he said he would have it to me in 48 hours ... but he is Nigeria so I'm not sure how the time system works there ... or if they even have clocks!

I could actually pay everyone back who just got scammed from this. Because I'm owed 4.5 million Pounds because I agreed to be shipped a container of priceless art stolen from the Iraqi Royal Palace in Baghdad by some British troops a few years ago.

Oh yeah, not to mention the countless European lotteries I've won.
