Hey Nintendo, pay attention: If you really want to find a direct line into the nostalgia centers of our brain, you could learn a few lessons from Super Mario Bros. X. The recently updated game borrows elements from the entire Super Mario franchise (not to mention a few other Nintendo properties), allows for co-op play, has some kind of time distortion gameplay mechanic, includes a level editor and occasionally lets the player navigate the Mushroom Kingdom using the eraser from Mario Paint. It is all kinds of crazy.
You can download the game here, or check out a 10-minute gameplay trailer posted after the jump.

That's because Nintendo's new 2D Mario wasn't half this creative...or free. Not that I didn't like the game.

I don't know about you all but I don't think the new Super Mario Bros. even hold a candle to the old ones. It just seems too floaty for a Mario game.

er... this looks more like a tech demo full of "look what I can do!" rather than a single, cohesive game.

Absolutely awesome. But I guarantee you they get a cease and desist order to take down the game and whatever site or server they run or own, and a lawsuit for copyright and trademark infringement. Best download it now while I still have the chance, lol.

What was the music at 6:40 from? It reminded me a lot of some of the music from Kirby games.

I downloaded this demo and now whenever I try to start anything up on my computer it minimizes instantly, and if I try to open it back up it minimizes instantly, forcing me to go into task manager and end the process.

What impress me the most about this game is that the author(s) of this game successfully created seamless coop transition when players get apparts from each other and it seems to be working very well.
Why can't nintendo came up with something like this with Super Mario Bro Wii?

Grabbing before Nintendo tells them to stop being awesome.

Grabbed in anticipation of the imminent cease and desist, even though I have no Windows machines.
Wish they would have released the source so that when that happens, someone could make a decent original platformer out of it, since a VB game is unlikely to have nicked any actual code from any Nintendo games.

Im probably a minority in this opinion but too much Mario Bros. 2-3 and not enough Mario World. The music for some levels ive seen just dont fit the game.

Why haven't they made the doom ship into a SSB level yet? That would be AWESOME!

I am on the final boss with all completed exits on all levels and I can honestly say thatin my opinion this game is better than the originals. There is an incredible amount of fan service, good co-op play, and interesting levels all throughout. I loved every second of it. It is designed to be a lot harder and you will die a lot. Luckily for me this is how I like it. It could use some more polish and I noticed a few bugs but I've been having the greatest time with it and have already put 8+ hours into it. I set it up on a TV with Wiimote/CC and had it out for my brother's graduation party. Lots of kids dug it and people sat around for a long time watching and trading off playing.
I couldn't recommend this game more. But play it with a proper controller that mimics a snes pad.
