Joy Ride MIA, but Microsoft insists 'BigPark's vision' will come to life in 2010
64
It appears that Joy Ride has been wiped as cleanly as possible from Xbox.com. Its game page is missing, and even the link to it from MS's E3 page has been removed. Joystiq contacted Microsoft for clarification and a spokesperson responded, "We're excited to bring BigPark's vision to life in 2010. However, we have nothing further to announce at this time." We followed up, specifically asking if "BigPark's vision" was still Joy Ride, if the game was currently in development and if it'd be shown at E3. The company has yet to respond to the request for clarification.
The latest on Joy Ride's status after it missed its 2009 launch was that it was going to be released sometime in 2010. Microsoft purchased Joy Ride developer BigPark last year and announced the kart racer with Avatar support at E3 2009. We'll update if Microsoft decides to let us see what's going on under the hood.
[Thanks, Pibs]

I remember this game from last year's E3 and was looking forward to it on XBLA. Seem to recall it was going to be free and have avatar support.
That this game and modnation racers were announced back to back, made me wonder if they decided to retool the concept or add additional polish. Whatever the case, it certainly missed it's 2009 release window. I can only hope they're making it better. Perhaps it'll have Natal support....

Microsoft needs more and better internal development studios. They look plain ol' bad compared to Nintendo and Sony.

I think their strategy was to actually get rid of most first party studios and just buy out third party exclusivity.

How many in-house exclusives does Sony really have? The only one I can really think of is God of War and Gran Turismo (if it ever comes out). They obviously do not own Insomniac, as they have gone multi-platform, and I am pretty sure they don't own Team ICO, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, or Quantic Dream. I could be wrong though, and if so feel free to correct me. Anywho, if I am right, Sony mostly has third-party exclusives as well.
Nintendo on the other hand...

@ Liquidfingers - Team ICO isn't technically a studio, it's an internal team at SCEJ. So yes they kind of do 'own' Team ICO. Naughty Dog most definitely is a part of SWWS, they are a wholly owned subsidiary along with Polyphony, Clap Hanz, Guerilla, Media Molecule, and Zipper, along with various studios (including Psygnosis) they've renamed under the SCEI branding and merged amongst themselves.

Cool. Thanks for clearing that up for me. It's difficult to know who is owned or who is just bought out these days. Not sure who Clap Hanz is, but God damnit Psygnosis needs to come out with a NEW WipeOut!!!

These are Sony's First-party studios:

and Psygnosis is now SCE Studio Liverpool, who fairly recently released the WipEout HD Fury expansion.

Which is a crappy strategy. And I'm a pretty big 360 fan, btw.
Good first party studios is where you get your best exclusives. And unlike 3rd part "exclusives", they don't move to other platforms. As much as Microsoft thinks it doesn't hurt, the timed exclusives do hurt their platform. They need new IP's exclusive to their system.

As some others have mentioned, my guess is that's it's being re-worked for use with Natal.. possibly launching alongside Natal.

It's been canned, sorry guys but MS remembered that "free" is equal to zero.

BigPark has been constantly hiring people here in Vancouver for at least 6 months. Surely they're working on something else.

My guess is that it will still come out, and still be free. But only with the Natal, they're gonna need to put something that doesn't look like a tech demo in the box. If they give it away free to everyone or even Gold members I'll be pleasantly surprised, but I doubt it.
