We reported on EA's plans to reboot its basketball franchise last week and, sure enough, the company has announced NBA Elite 11 today. Set to hit the retail paint in October, NBA Elite 11 boasts "an all-new technology base, a new control scheme and a real-time physics system."
It's currently only in development for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and the new physics system means that players can now move around the court independently without being tied to another player. There's also going to be a new skill-driven shooting system that will require "accurate user input" and have its success tied into player orientation on the court -- no longer will there be "random dice rolls" to determine successful shooting. Finally, EA details a new "Hands-On" control scheme, which promises 1:1 movement, doing away with those long, annoying animations of the past.
Overall, it sounds like EA Canada is rebuilding things from the ground up for NBA Elite 11. But if you're going to do that, why not call it Hoop McGee and the Spalding Boys 11 or Slam Dunkerstein: The Legend of Curly's Gold 11? Why not get a bit more creative, you know?

For what it's worth, NBA Live '10 was probably a better game this year than NBA 2K10... but for the 9 years prior, NBA 2K pretty much owned NBA Live.

No... I'm sorry that is the incorrect answer, Brazell.

I enjoyed NBA Live '10 more than NBA 2K10, but I didn't give either a very long play through.

What this means for basketball games is huge. Basketball games are one of the only games that really regressed from the 16-bit to 32-bit era, and then regressed again jumping to the generation after that. The reason is because of what this physics-like system tries to fix: As basketball games became more graphically advanced, the developers of every basketball game could only achieve the sort of things you see on TV with 1 on 1 animations.... You do a crossover and your defender gets committed to getting beat on the crossover; either the defender gets beat and he commits to the animation, or he doesn't and he holds his ground. There was very little in the game that the players could really effect by moving properly, most of the game -- like the NBA in many respects -- were isolation moves.
It was always too bad because basketball, perhaps more than any other major American sport, has more small interactions between players that make a big difference. In the animation-based formula for basketball games, how can you replicate the hand and positioning battle between an offensive center and the center defending him? You really can't: it all comes down to an arbitrary animation, either performed by the CPU or by switching to the player and mashing a button.
Since the 32-bit era, basketball games have really suffered from players getting locked into animations and not being able to do anything about it. Basketball games were some of my favorites games then, but I stopped playing them because of how scripted everything became... and it's been like this for almost 15 years.
Hopefully the NBA Live/ELite team takes the same successful steps as the NHL '08/09/10 team and turns out an innovative, unique, and playable game.

I would say just rent it but if you want to okay online then that's going to be pointless to do this year.....
But it's just another 4 or 5 years until the exclusivity is up....doubt the NFL will renew that at this point....

I feel u on the licensing contract but I wouldn't go as far as to say I don't like Madden. The last 2 Maddens I had more fun with than ever, and I STILL play Madden 10 to this point which I can only say I've done with Madden 09. Every other Madden lost steam with me after the NFL season was over.
I REALLY hope the NFL doesn't renew the contract with EA. It's supposed to be up in 2013. I DO want to see another NFL2K and maybe even a NFL Backbreaker game in the future.Hell, I want Sony to bring back NFL Gameday!! With the right devs with great talent coupled with the exclusive power of the PS3, meaning that the devs ONLY have to deal with devving the game for the PS3 and can fully take advantage of the tech, Gameday could potentially be SICK! I hope Sony is already planning that game.

Doesn't matter how well they make the physics and everything. Still the same game, but with different teams. Can't make a game of football different after all these years.

Shouldn't this technically be NBA Elite "1"; as it's the first "Elite" title? as opposed to "Live 11"
I dunno, I'll just go back to counting Street Fighters

It's been a while since I've followed basketball and heavily played a basketball game. This upcoming year I was looking to start doing both again, so this is very promising for me!

Live 10 actually kept me from buying 2K10 after all the years of supporting NBA2K. I just enjoyed the level of control and the atmosphere and such. I felt like I was more "in the game" than with 2K10.
As for this new name? Hate it but I LOVE what I've been hearing about the new, real-time physics engine. Think Euphoria Engine, folks, cuz that's what I've been hearing the new Elite 11 engine is comparable to. NHL 11 is going to have the same engine and I would expect Madden 12 to have it, too. Can't wait to see this engine in action.
