its been 3 years, i doubt they are working on ep3 since the past 2 episodes everyone bitched about being too short and too long dev time, which leads to believe full blown hl3

Actually Acosta02 is right, they said they might just continue the story with Half Life 3 instead of Ep 3. Either way is fine with me! Bring it!

What am I, a valve employee? I don't know anymore than you do, it's just a rumor.

...I should have specified that the first "they" in my sentence was a general "they," not valve.

Gabe has said before that the Episodes are Half-Life 3:

"Half-Life 3 [a.k.a. Episodes One to Three] is about the relationship with the G-Man and what happens when he loses control of you, when you're not available to him as a tool and how he responds to that, and what are the consequences of that."

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/i_valve_060606

Then again, they could just say "Eff It," and throw HL3 our way.

He has, but it's not like they're going to call the next one Half-Life 4.

Another short ass episode using a slightly updated engine after 3 years would be insulting.

In the time since Episode 2 came out we've had 2 Assassin's Creeds, and 2 Mass Effects. Mass Effect 1 AND 2 have come out since Episode 2 was released. The surprise better be Half Life 3, not Episode 3.

They were considering the episodes to be half life 3... there is a difference. This is a strategic marketing tool to get people to stop asking them about half life 3 so that they can actually start development on it without having to talk about it. Valve has tried to be really tight lipped on thier new projects until very close to release ever since thier security breach on half life 2. announcing the episodes as half life 3 simply allows them to devote a team to pumping out expansions while they start work on a new engine\game. The guys that worked on the improvements to source for the last few years are most likely NOT the same resources that would be used to develop a new engine....... what do you think those guys have been working on for the past 6 years? I'm really excited to see where this goes... I've been expecting that they would be doing this ever since the episodes were announced I just thought they would have gotten episode 3 out by now but they may have decided that baking that content into HL3 would make more since for them because the episodes took much longer than they expected.... remember Valve has also claimed that Episode:3... (at this point probably just a code name like natal) is "Very ambitious" if Valve is calling something that then I can't wait to see what they have in store for us.... just a little food for thought. Again this is all my opinion.... it's not like I have any conections with any members of the development team at Valve or anything.

@ w1n5t0n,
This is totally off-topic, but is your username from the novel Little Brother perchance?

On-topic:
I wouldn't be surprised if the whole cancellation actually fits into the event. Maybe they'll reveal that GLaDOS was really behind the cancellation of it or something. Who knows?

Hey if they have a giant animatronic GLaDOS lower from the ceiling and spout off gibberish about "Deadly Neurotoxin" and then start pumping chemical smoke into the auditorium ....... they will officially win the best flagrant use marketing dollars ever in the history of mankind.

(even if I am against spending more on marketing than goes into developing)

Why would the even think of TF3? T They have still the engineer update to release, and TF2 is not even close to be outdated enough to need a sequel. TF2 still has a lot of potential, and does not need any sequels.

I hate to say it, but look what they did with L4D. It wasn't outdated enough for a sequel and they hadn't finished all the updates/DLC.

Actually Alphathonm i remember a Valve dev saying the reason they made L4D2 so fast was because L4D was in their opinion, not what the fully imagined. Besides that versus based shooters last much longer than games like L4D (l4d versus is so unorthodox it does not count)

I know a lot of people expect HL2:E3, or maybe even HL3.
But that would hardly be surprising, so I don't know what to expect. L4D3 would be surprising, but I know a lot of people would be pissed.

The full email:

Dear Subject Name Here,

Aperture Science is pleased to inform you that we have partnered with Valve to announce the gala CANCELLATION of the June 14 Portal 2 event at the Regal Theater. The event will be replaced by a surprise. And even though the cancellation of the event certainly counts as a surprise, we are pleased to further announce that the cancellation of the event is not THE surprise. However, per International treaties regarding the definition of the word "surprise", of which both Aperture Science and Valve are signatories, the time, date and content of the actual surprise will only become available as you experience the surprise.

If you'd like to ask fruitless questions about the E3 Portal 2 surprise or, more fruitfully, schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's Special Envoy to Surprises, Doug Lombardi.

Thank you for **RECORD SCRATCH!!!**

PS: The surprising record scratch is also not the surprise.
