That doesn't mean they didn't pick it at random. Random doesn't mean arbitrary, nor does it mean bad.

@Alpha: They didn't pick it at random. Do you know any graphic designers? They'll spend ages picking a font and coming up with adjectives for how it contributes to the brand ethic and... (Of course, that's just bullshit and the real reason is 'because I thought it looked nice', but still, it wasn't random. :)

And random doesn't need to mean bad, but it does mean arbitrary. That's pretty much the definition of random.

"Do you know any graphic designers?"
Yes. In fact I do some myself (along with web design/development and some photo manipulation on the side).

"They'll spend ages picking a font and coming up with adjectives for how it contributes to the brand ethic and... (Of course, that's just bullshit and the real reason is 'because I thought it looked nice', but still, it wasn't random. :)"
Sometimes, yes. Those aren't mutually exclusive though. You can choose a font completely randomly or with a specific shape and style in mind, but either way you can still justify your use of it. Even if you pick a font at random, which I'm sure few designers do, you still have to defend and/or convince your employer/whoever contracted you that it is the right choice, no matter the method of choosing.

"And random doesn't need to mean bad, but it does mean arbitrary. That's pretty much the definition of random."
Actually, no it isn't/doesn't. They have similar outcomes but something can be random without being arbitrary and vice versa. For example if you pick a number at random between 1 and 10, the number must be no larger than 10 and no smaller than 1. Within the confines of 1-10 they number may be arbitrary, or may be chosen by a set of rules (some kind of randomness algorithm). Arbitrary is where something is chosen without rules/confines or without reasons for the rules by an "arbiter". In this example, a person won't be arbitrary (or truly random either) due to the internal sub-conscious desire to not choose 1 or 10, to not be too close to the middle and to appear to be random (in reality 2 and 7 are usually picked for pretty much this reason) while a computer is much closer to true randomness but is using a set of mathematical rules to choose so isn't arbitrary.

In this case they could have picked a font at random and thought "does that look good?" At that point it ceases to be arbitrary, but is still randomly picked. They could also have made a short list of fonts and then picked at random from them. It is unlikely to be the case either way, but is certainly possible.

It's one of those things (confusing random and arbitrary) that is done so often most people think it is true, similarly to incorrectly using surreal to describe things which are incredibly unlikely. Surreal things would generally be incredibly unlikely, but that is not what it means.

I read OT as on-topic and got confused.

But no, it doesn't look weird to me. As far as I can see it looks exactly like my Xbox 360 Elite. The only odd thing I suppose is that in that picture you can't see the hard drive on top.

Attention Rare: How about a little less new logo-making and a little more porting the arcade Battletoads game onto Xbox Live Arcade?

Can we get Microsoft to sell it back to Nintendo? It seems like they haven't had a lot going on since Microsoft bought them.

Woohoo, let's jump on that Rare hate bandwagon!

What nonsense. I know it's fashionable to moan about Rare and how you miss the 'glory days' but I've been playing Rare games since the NES and I've genuinely been happier with this gen's output that any other. Rare are still a legendary studio, they've got the same attitude and talent even if the individual staff are different; and I'm really excited to see what they pull out at E3.

Nuts & Bolts was brilliant, and Viva Pinata is a truly great game, easily one of the top 5 this gen - it's criminal to dismiss it out of hand. Lush visuals (which will age well, unlike fashionable brown'n'grey shooters), easy to pick up and play but also deep if you put in the effort (as anyone who has managed to catch a Galagoogoo will tell you), great music, great writing, great gameplay. Don't ignore it just because your friend said it was for kids.

You can't be serious. You're happier with this generation's output that any other? So you'd rather play Viva Pinata and Nuts & Bolts instead of Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong Country, Jet Force, Conker, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Battletoads, and Blast Corps?!? I hate to be that guy that rags on someone's opinion, but... your opinion sucks.

@Uncle Jesse

"So you'd rather play Viva Pinata and Nuts & Bolts instead of Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong Country, Jet Force, Conker, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Battletoads, and Blast Corps?!? "

I'm going to go against the grain and agree with him somewhat. I personally think many older Rare games are a bit overrated to begin with. KI blow. Sorry, it does. It's a pitiful fighter and I'll never understand why it's so popular. DKC was a boring collect-a-thon. No where close to the original BK. Speaking of BK... the first was fantastic, the second much less so. It was still OK, but not great. JFG... never could get into this. Boring IMO. Blast Corps... fun for a while, but ultimately tedious and zero replay value. GE is great, PD was not. The game lost its soul when they lost the Bond license. PD wasn't remotely as good and ran like shit anyway. Conker is utterly average. This game wouldn't have been gained nearly the attention it got if it weren't for the toilet humor and the striking contrast that humor set being on a Nintendo platformer. At it's core it's a completely average and rather boring platformer. Similar to how Mortal Kombat gained a big name in the fighting genre by being over the top violent even though it's a sub-par fighter.

So, IMO, there 360 games are largely the same... a mixed bag. PDZ was OK, but sort of behind the times as far as shooters go. Kameo is OK as well. Not great, but not bad either. The VP games are very good. Some people are turned off by their kiddie appearance, but the graphics are lush and gameplay addictive if you give them a fair shot. N&B is highly underrated. So many people wrote the game off or went into the game expecting to hate and thus they did. I know many people wanted a traditional platformer, but what they were given is a deep a fantastic vehicular based platformer that I think many would have loved if they had given it a fair shot. It's easily in my top 5 this gen for the 360.

Anyway, this is all just my opinion... but my opinion is that Nintendo's Rare is vastly overrated and MS' Rare vastly underrated. The truth somewhere in the middle.

Like I said, we're all just stating our own opinions. I loved all those games. I just remember the announcement of a new Rare game being met with so much anticipation and hype. It was like guaranteeing a brand new AAA title was coming out. Microsoft scooping them up was such a huge move at the time and everyone thought that MS would have this killer lineup with all these amazing games. Now here we are today with people writing off new Rare games before they are even played. Maybe I'm just butt-hurt because I miss the old Rare. *Single tear*

Trust me, I sincerely hope that they prove me wrong in the future. Preferably the very near future.

as a graphic designer, i'm not feeling this one. the old one had character. this has no punchline what so ever and it's pretty generic overall. i mean at least they kept some of the old logo but as far as "innovative" and "creative" it is not. plain jane magazine cover font.

This logo is pretty bland and I feel that a lot of the design decisions were just based on current logo trends. The old logo was so much better and so much more memorable. But whatever it's not like they make good games anymore anyways so they are allowed to have a forgettable logo, as they will be forgotten.

Any one of you that says that Rare hasn't put out a good game in years hasn't played Nuts & Bolts for more then 10 minutes. The way people write that game off just because it isn't EXACTLY like the old games just pisses me off...

I don't think I've had a single more exciting experience in gaming (for a long time, anyway) than first building a vehicle with the folding wings part. It was at that exact moment that I completely fell in love with the game.
