Bigpoint turning The Mummy franchise into browser MMO

In what may be the most puzzling film-to-video game adaptation partnerships in the history of mankind, free-to-play game developer Bigpoint and Universal Studios have announced plans to create a browser-based MMO set in The Mummy film franchise. We've been sitting here, staring at that sentence for a good ten minutes now, and we still don't know what to make of it.

A recent press release announcement describes The Mummy Online as "a free-to-play Action-RPG MMO game" where players "take on heroic roles as adventure seekers," all the while exploring the tombs and crypts of Egypt in the early 20th century. Players will interact with characters from the films, will engage in battle against "ancient evil," and, presumably, will periodically be forced to exclaim some variation on the following:

The funny thing is Activision is technically paying for our right to enjoy joystiq and it's community as a whole. Even your ability to post the comment you just made was partially funded by Activision. Oh the irony!

I don't have anything against Activision, It's just to easy i can't resist.

This is so crazy, for no reason at all, I got on to read Cyanide & Happiness and Joystiq, and after I finished catching up on C&H, I come here and see Pre-Mature-Ejaculation Man...it's all like an episode of Lost!

Now there's a franchise that was screaming for the MMO treatment...

I'd rather pay to play a GOOD Mummy game.

Eventually, the last idea gets pulled from the hat.

this series needed to be embalmed and placed in a tomb after the second film

i am sick of these mother----ing mummies on this mother---ing plane.

Thought I should mention, this game is to run on the Unity Engine. This means it should be 3D, along the lines of Tiger Woods Pro Golf Online (EA's newest free online sports game offering) and it looks wonderful. So, I'll be on the look out for it. I mean, it's free, what to lose?
