I hope to god its Half-Life 3, just episode 3 wouldn't be a big enough announcement imo unless they announced Counter-strike 2 at the same time.

I doubt we're getting Counter-Strike 2. Why would they, if they're in the process of revamping CS Source?

I have a feeling they're going to just skip episode 3 since its been three years since 2 came out.

I'll take a Half-Life announcement over Portal /any/ day.

Unless GLaDOS is actually there to announce Portal 2, then that takes the cake (pun partially intended).

I've convinced myself that they scrapped HL2 Ep3 and turned it into HL3. I mean, what else could possibly been taking them so long on Ep3?

Mostly though, I'm hoping they announce they've developed a new engine. Source is really showing its age.

I wouldn't be opposed to an entirely new HL3 game so long as the engine is new. Granted, with proper modding you can get some pretty fantastic things from the Source engine these days. But the original "wow" factor of the engine was based on physics and lighting, and plenty of games since then have realistic physics and HDR lighting.

If it was an entirely new game (with an entirely new engine), chances are we'd still be waiting another year or two to play it, depending on when(/if) the decision was made to make it HL3. It's been almost a few years since the release of Episode 2, so if the decision was made right then and there to develop a new engine for a full-length game, then it may not be very far off. But when it comes to Half-Life, I've always had the mentality of letting Valve take as long as it needs to get it right. I just have a hard time believing that they've spent 3 years making an episode with a 4-5 hour play time. That, to me, is evidence enough that something big is bound to be announced.

I think it would be a little lame for HL2:Ep.3 to be HL3. To me, HL3 should be a big jump in universe - just like 2 was.

episode 3 instead of HL3 would be extremely disappointing, 3 years is more than enough time to make a huge epic game, 3 years to make another 2-3hour episode would be completely ridiculous.

To make up for the 3 years, they'll announce Episode 3, Half-Life 3, and Half-Life 3: Episode 1, all coming 2011.

Are you listening, Valve?

@Keen that's crazy. HL1 barely had any characters let alone good ones, but the hugest part of HL2 being so excellent was it's atmosphere and characters. Jumping forward another 20 years when we're finally getting close to resolution with said characters would be awful!

My guess: Episode 3 is built on the HL3 engine. Released seperatly Q3/4 2010, but then also included with HL3 in 20-whenever.

Half Life 3: Prolouge, if you will.

There is no source for this thing at all. It just popped up and is getting all this buzz. I sometimes hate all this pre E3 rumor crap. Theres even hype over Ninja Gaiden 2 images that were cropped, darkened and zoomed in and people are freaking out thinking its part 3 of the series.

Yes!!! As happy as I am for this announcement, Valve's shunning of the PS3 causes me not to get my hopes too far up. I'm still happy it's at least in development though.

While Hugh Laurie does look a lot more like Gordon Freeman, Nathan Fillion makes almost anything he's in better.

Hugh Laurie is way to old to play Gordon Freeman. He's like 50 years old while Freeman is 27.
