We've seen the Left 4 Dead SDK be used to create some truly impressive, zombie-infested levels, but this one might just take the cake. Three modders recently published a full-length, five-chapter campaign for Valve's original Zombocalypse survival sim, titled "I Hate Mountains" -- a quote from the game's lovable, vested contrarian, Francis.
The campaign, which took over one year to develop, takes players through a number of eerie, lovingly crafted environments, such as a lumber yard and a (likely structurally unsound) mansion. You can check out a trailer for I Hate Mountains after the jump, or download it from the mod's official website.

Played this late night and it's amazing. The levels are more detailed than any of Valve's maps and they're huge. There are a bunch of alternate paths and they even implemented cinematic physics! I think Valve should give these guys some money and distribute the map to all players through an update.

That's a capital idea.
It's to bad that the SDK wasn't released sooner. But then again it would make the case against LFD2 that much tougher.

The mechanics and graphics/gore system are much better in left for dead 2. Despite all the hate and jokes.

@Wiizer [Now with 320 Gigs On My Launch PS3!]
Just that I don't have left 4 dead installed any more. I actually somehow have become more attached to the new survivors now, Except for bot coach.

I know that.. But I don't have much room on my main drive / steam drive. I wish steam had support for an external library because i want to still have cs:s with me when I don't take my external with me.

That's why I have two Steam installs; one on my 1.5TB external drive, and one on my internal drive, for TF2, CS:S, HL1, Indigo Prophecy, Braid, et cetera smallish-in-size games.
Yes, that means that I have to open my internal Steam install every once and a while when I'm online to update everything, but I can also have every game I own through Steam installed at all times on my external.

Something I've learned about Left 4 Dead is nowhere in the world has anyone finished construction on anything.

It's great to see a news post about a new campaign from the modding community - especially one that isn't a just cheap riff on an existing game like Resident Evil. There are a lot of original mods out there that could stand to have some publicity and it's nice to see Joystiq promoting them.

I admit, I am half surprised this isn't on "Big Download", since that seems to be their dumping ground for anything PC gaming.

I'll probably finally buy Left 4 Dead now. Gotta love the modding community!

On the one hand this looks good. On the other hand, Portal Prelude was such utter trash I want it to fail so the team stops making mods for any game. I'm conflicted...

The map could have needed some Valve-esk man off the street testing.
While the scripts are really awesome, and new meshes look great, voice scripting is fantastic, and overall, great work on these parts... It is way to dark, so hard to see where you should go, each map seems to have a split way system, but nothing preventing me from backtracking up the wrong way when I come to a centre point, they have not followed the "lights" rule that Valve has (always follow the light, it will guide you to the right way) so I ended up wandering into areas that were brighter then the surrounding areas, but going the wrong way. I also felt that the amount of loot was lacking. After a tank, 1/3rds of the way along one map, I ran out of ammo, did not find new weapons or a ammo stash before the safe room.
All in all, if they did some minor fixes, this would be on par with Blood Harvest or Mercy Hospital. It's already way better then The Passing and Swamp Fever.
Looking forward to the L4D2 port, better lighting system, weather effects,

Just played through the campaign and was very very impressed. I think the darkness of it added to the ambiance overall, much more spooky when you cant always see em coming. These guys should be very proud of themselves for releasing this little gem, good show and thanks!
