My god, will it ever end? I know the game's story was good (ok, decent) but thats about it. Not really worth many merits in my opinion.

I think anime is more or less defined as "east asian animation". Way too much variety in it to consider anything stylistic or genre-wise in the definition. By that token, no it isn't anime, they're just using that term because of the so called "animation age ghetto" - can't call it a cartoon, because then people will think it's for kids, and simply calling it anime makes life easier than trying to create a new, also respectable term for it.

just my $0.02

I'll coin a term. You say it's Canadian? How about 'Canime' or, bear with me, 'Canim, Eh'

Sorry.

Given that "anime" is simply the Japanese (loan)word for animation, regardless of its source, it's applicable.

Considering the entire industry, especially visual style, is an extension of 1940s American cartoons, calling it anime is just fine.

Most things that come on Adult Swim, really. They have good taste. Fullmetal Alchemist, Deathnote, Code Geass, so on.

(I'm actually not a huge fan of Miyazaki. He tends to get a little too trippy for me.)

Great...a full length MGS on PSP, Golden Eye on Wii, and now a Dragon Age anime. Why do they keep pairing something I love so much with something I'm pretty much roundly opposed to. What's next, peanut-butter and Libertarian cookies?

Funny that an anime based on a WRPG is the only thing that could get me interested in the game proper. I'll be looking out for it.

I hate WRPGs. There's too much to do without meaningful direction, and they rely too much on your own imagination to make mundane actions seem cool. Stat-crunching may be cool with some people, but without a compelling narrative (i.e., does not get stuck in a rut because you're expected to do a shitton of sidequests to grind for story missions) and possibly pretty visuals and animations...

Anyway, if this gets me into the game's story and world, my opinion of it may change.

whoa whoa whoa, you're saying you don't like WRPGs, and grinding and non compelling plots are your criticisms? Are you sure you have the right genre?

Well, I can see his point. When I think of most WRPGs, the plot is... well, not exactly a strong point. For all it's spiky hair and improbable weapons, JRPGs (usually) know how to tell a story. It can get a little repetitive in the gameplay mechanics, though. (CoughLostOdysseycough) Still, you can just kill a few monsters, gain a few levels, and be able to plow through the main storyline.

On the other hand, Diablo, Borderlands, and yes, Dragon Age, all focus on loot, proper stat placement, and generally speaking are more about the gameplay than the story. It requires much more skill and effort to create a character due to the wealth of potential equipment combinations. They usually, and I'm not trying to flame here, don't have much in story. Bioware does exceptionally well, but they're nowhere near Final Fantasy X, Xenosaga, or Lost Odyssey.

I'd be hard pressed to really consider Borderlands an RPG anymore than say, Marvel Ultimate Alliance is. As much as I loved, loved, loved Dragon Age, the combat, at least on the console versions was really not the focus, at least not in my opinion since I thought Dragon Age had an exceptional plot, or at least exceptional writing and voice acting.

But anyway, in my opinion, the gameplay SHOULD be the focus or at least be entertaining like in Mass Effect 2, whereas with damn near every JRPG i've ever played there might be a delicious chewy story center, instead of a candy coating, it's usually buried under layers of awful combat and awkward voice acting and dialogue.

But all those points aside, I've flat out never ever ever had to grind to continue with the main story of a WRPG, certainly not with Dragon Age. They're sidequests because they're (imagine italics on this next one) on the side! Even if i was pressed into doing them to get buy, at least they provide a bigger morsel of story and interaction than walking in circles waiting for "A CHALLENGER APPROACHES!" sorta deal

@Deuce In Japan, certainly. All animation is referred to as anime there. But whilst that was a loan word from the west, meaning 'animation', so too 'anime' has become a loanword from the east to mean 'east-asian* animation'. Anime = animation, but not all animation = anime. The term has evolved.

My line of thought in the original post was similar to how there's a distinction between 'comics' and 'graphic novels', as arbitrary as it is. Instead of calling it a cartoon, why not (say) an 'animated series'?

* I say east-asian because whilst the vast majority comes from Japan, S.Korea has been making a name for itself recently, amongst others.

They'll give you the first 12 episodes and a code for the next 2, but you have to pay $40 for the last 10. Filler episodes are also available from $5 to $10. Also, it won't sell as well as other anime, prompting Bioware to criticize other anime and saying that they aren't actual anime.

Jesus, no. I don't particularly care for anime on itself, but I can understand why people do and even enjoy the truly great "classics". But shit, these video game adaptations have been universally terrible, especially Halo Legends.

"Anime", when not used in Japan, denotes Japanese animation. So, using "anime" for this is incorrect.

I don't know if the "anime" will be drawn/animated in the US or in Japan. The press release doesn't really make it clear. So the style of the character art is really up in the air.
But I'm guessing it won't be very "cutesy" considering DAO's M-rated nature.

The Halo anime was pretty crappy I thought. The collection of short videos idea just didn't work, IMO.

Dunno how the Dante's Inferno anime was. The game was too crappy so I didn't check it out.
