Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded for DS revealed in Square Enix E3 lineup

Square Enix has announced its lineup of games to be shown at E3, and, while there may be surprises yet to be revealed, the company has already unveiled a rather big one. Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded, a new DS game by 358/2 Days developer h.a.n.d., will be on display at the show.

The game sounds like an action-RPG remake of the Japan-only mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Coded, in which a virtual Sora retraces his steps through the original Kingdom Hearts. "Jiminy Cricket is looking over the journal he used to document his first adventure with Sora when he discovers a mysterious message," according to the description of Re:Coded included in Square's E3 press release. "He didn't write it – so how on earth did it get there? King Mickey is determined to find out, so he and his friends decide to digitize the journal and delve into its deepest secrets. Inside this "datascape" dwells a second Sora who is about to embark on a grand adventure of his very own."

The game currently has a "TBD" release date. Square Enix didn't specify how much of the game would be shown, but considering it's just been announced, we expect little more than a trailer.

I guess I was hoping for too much when I thought the Kingdom Hearts announcement at E3 was going to be number 3

I think this is the 4th spinoff game made after Kingdom Hearts 2. They are really focusing on handhelds lately with the series.

This wouldn't be so much of an issue if we knew anything about KH3.

This is the third made after KH2. First was 358/2 Days on DS, then Birth By Sleep on PSP, now this is on it's way.

You might be thinking of the GBA game Chain of Memories... That was between 1 and 2 though.

actually punk he's right, it is 4. There is 2 KH games they are working on right now, this being one of them, and its been said already the other ISN'T KH3.

And assuming that Birth by Sleep is the 2nd project, it's still very possible that the third project is KH3.

I'd love if square remade the original 2 kingdom hearts games in hd and made them available for download instead of churning out these mediocre spin-offs.

Square keeps saying they only want to focus on main series. Basically, TWEWY is too good to do again.

If there is any sort of god or divine being, there will never be a sequel to twewy.

That is a game that does not need a sequel and should not get a sequel.

It is a game that if a sequel was made, it would cheapen the original.

What they should make is a game that has the same vasts amounts of creativity, effort, and love that is completely new and original.

I think TWEWY would've sold more if:
A: Nomura should've hired japanese people who can speak english fluently and don't slur their words.
B: A more original storyline not a rip off of japanese drama show SHI3UYA.

You definitely aren't alone. I love the fact that Square Enix is expanding the universe a little more. I don't care so much that we aren't getting the next in the main series, any Kingdom Hearts is good for me. Birth by Sleep looks fantastic and I'm glad we're even getting Coded since it was a cell phone exclusive in Japan.

Chrono Trigger is by far one of the best RPGs to date.

i checked the trailer......... not quite impressed......... but kingdom hearts has dissapointed me yet.... so wat the heck

358/2 is probably my favorite KH game in a lot of ways (having a story that made sense of several of the series' mysteries helped) so I'll be interested in seeing what they do with re:Coded.

good news, it is a remake of the mobile phone and not a new confusing entry. bad news, not sure if i care. I have had all about i can stand of Roxas and Sora before kingdom hearts 2, seems like this will be the 4th one! lets see what happens next, not before.

However, I hear KH Fw:Coded is going to be much cooler.

I totally lost interest in Kingdom Hearts about halfway through Kingdom Hearts 2. IGN's review of KH2 was surprisingly accurate.

I'm suprised this is a handheld DS release and not something they would hand over to the iphone/ipod.

That said: I'm getting this.

Nomura said in an interview a couple of months ago that development of this game was progressing quite well and he said that it could very well be released this year, so yeah...we can expect more than a trailer.

By the way, this game is kinda important, since it happens after KH2 and is actually quite spoilerrific because it kinda shows us what happens to Aqua, Terra and Ventus of Birth by Sleep and how this all ties in to KH3.

I used to love SquareSoft. Final Fantasy games were my quintessential RPGs. Lately though I am not overly pleased with some of the crap they have released. I mean, Infinite Undiscovery was complete garbage and they keep whoring out KH rehashes in stead of making a new good one.

You're confusing developers Square with the now publishing powerhouse Square-Enix.

SE publishes games that they have had no creative hand in what-so-ever (as you pointed out, Infinite Undiscovery). The Square that raised you has left and a new rich, abusive, whoring step-dad has moved in.

I wouldn't be so opposed if they game WAS NOT about Sora going back through the original KH worlds. He's already done that in Chain of Memories. Talk about recycling. It's getting old. Bring some new content, not some "Story elements" like 2/3543543 whatever did. Though I admit, it was kinda cool for the co-op and being able to play different people. It was just recycled worlds though. =/

This game seems to have almost no significance to the main story of KH. I'm a hardcore KH fanboy, and I want a true KH 3, or even a release date for Birth By Sleep which seems outstanding. Stop beating around the bush square....it's starting to seem like you're milking KH which isn't even understandable seeing as games like re-chain, chain, 358/2 aren't even huge hits like 1 & 2 were.

i'm just so frustrated with them and this series...it has so much potential now after KH2's awesomeness.

Well, Mr. Fanboy, Birth by Sleep comes out September 7. I think it was announced two weeks ago or so.

I'm a failure for not knowing that...as far as I knew it was set for Summer 2010 release in North America. September 7th is good enough for me, Birth By Sleep seems like a full blown KH game, looks better than KH 2

I want a Kingdom Hearts game where you play as the Disney protagonist of each world (Aladdin, Snow White, Beast, Simba, etc) rather than just Sora and CPU-controlled helpers.

If this is Coded, then it might be good, even if it's just KH1's worlds all over again.

The difference is that SE didn't milk Chrono Trigger. Even the slightest affection would have been nice.

This was supposed to appear on iPhone as well but it's been delayed and will relaunch later in the fiscal year as Kingdom Hearts: Objective-C

When is Square gonna learn they need to stop wasting their Kingdom Hearts game on the DS? In half a year Birth By Sleep has sold over 750k in Japan alone. 358/2 Days hasn't even sold 1.5M in a year in all three regions. Once Birth By Sleep launches in the US and Europe it's gonna double in sales, especially when you factor in the PSN sales we wont even be able to track.

Why is this Coded remake being wasted on the DS? It'd be way better as a PSN title or something. Yea. I give up. Square, do what you want. When you decide to give me something I give a shit about I'll pay attention.
