Warner Bros. announced a new Mortal Kombat game this morning, and Seven of Nine is nowhere to be found. The game, called simply Mortal Kombat, appears to be a return to the classic Mortal Kombat 2/3 style of gameplay -- extremely quick, 2D fighting -- which has been given a fresh coat of 3D paint and a very noticeable 60 frames-per-second framerate. It also features a man being sliced open at the groin with a spinning hat.
It adds a new tag team mode for up to four players, allowing teams to play through a "co-op arcade mode" or compete online against other pairs of e-murderers.
The game is being developed by Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon and NetherRealm Studios (the former WB Games Chicago) and is slated for launch on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2011.
Here how about this? We have different taste. I prefer 3D fighters because it's easier to dodge projectiles and to get out of corners. There. You prefer 2D fighters for whatever reasons you do. Also when I play a fighter I don't want to have to study. I get enough of that from school.
Essentially, a return to roots of sorts for a somewhat floundering franchise, and I absolutely love it!
I just hope Boon keeps his word and keeps the mature rating. I hope that there's many unique fatalities (and multiple one's for each character!). I hope there's tons of old kombatants and new kombatants. I hope there's a good opening and ending for every character so we get a storyline every time we play through with a different character. I hope they finally through a few boobs into the mix - Sure, we've seen characters flash an opponent to death (Orchid in Killer Instinct), let's see a similar move, but actually see what's behind the curtain ;) Let's see some cameo's from other WB franchises - maybe the Joker or someone else in the DC universe? Stuff that game with as much crap as possible so that it's the go to "2D" fighter for the next couple years.
I can't believe it took them this long to make this: what we actually wanted. THANK YOU. Next on the list? Sonic? oh, right they're doing that too... Castlevania? oh, right... I guess that one is only a rumor though. How bout 2d Metroid?
"www.themortalkombat.com"? Who registered that domain, my dad?
Anyway. I've never been a big MK fan, but this and the live-action movie test footage whatever are really making me nostalgic for it. WB Games is doing something right.
It's a very Mortal Kombatey kind of game, with lots of inspiration from Mortal Kombat.
Naw, I mean it's cool. It's...Mortal Kombat and not a lot of surprises there. Not even new characters, or nothing. I guess they finally gave up on trying to create new characters after the whole Taven and Daegon fiasco.
Co-op Tag team seems like a nice Idea. I'd actually been trying to get Capcom to do something like this, which they haven't since Dreamcast MVC.
Nothing really new here. This engine at least on the surface looks exactly the same as the engine for MK VS DC. That's not a bad thing mind you because that game was pretty tight, just not really a WOW factor type video for me because I've seen this before. It'll be a cool game though.
Now if they can just used Digitized actors again this game would be perfect. However, I understand the costs of that are far higher and thus, will never happen. Do want and will buy.
Graphics look "meh" (but it may be just because of the video) and animations look as jerky as ever, but man... everything else is just AWESOME. The UMK3-like gameplay, the classic stages, the violence... it's like a love letter for MK fans of old. Preorder for me.
The newest chapter of the iconic fight franchise marks a triumphant return to the series' mature presentation and a reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic. Driven by an all new graphics engine, the fan favorite Fatality is back and presented in more gory detail than ever before. In addition, Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game-play features including tag team and the deepest story mode of any fighting game. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game's iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several new game modes.
