Final Fantasy IX 'Fight, Magic, Item, Run'-ing to PSN next week
69
The final (and some would argue best) installment of the Final Fantasy franchise on the original PlayStation will, at long last, make it to the North American PlayStation Store next week. Final Fantasy IX will mimic the $10 price point of the other two PS1 Fantasies currently available on PSN and will be added to the storefront with the update next Tuesday, June 15.
If you skipped out on the ninth entry in the long-lasting series -- which isn't too unlikely, considering its sales numbers clocked in well below those of FFVII and FFVIII -- the PSN re-release is your chance to find what all the fuss is about. We wish we'd have some time to reinvest into IX next week ourselves, but, well, we might be kind of busy.

Probably the most under appreciated title in the series and my favourite in the numbered main series.

Well, of course you liked Tactics. You have Laharl as your picture! They're the top two games in the genre.
But I most definitely agree. Tactics is by far the best game in the series.

I'm trying to decide between FF VIII and FF IX. Can somebody help me decide which one to buy, if I can only pick one?

Do you want a futuristic RPG with weird magic system (No MP, the magic you hold determines your stats depending on your junctions) but more to do in terms of sidequests and an okay story
Or a medieval RPG with a great story, likeable characters, and fuses the best parts of SNES FF's and PS1 FF's?

since when did FFVIII have more sidequests than FFIX? If anything they are equal or 9 had more stuff to do. This comment is meant for Zexion, but since replying to a reply is all but impossible I have to do this. Dammit Joystiq, whenever you fix something another problem comes up.

"Great" story is highly exaggerated... I don't want to spoil anything, but it completely falls apart in the end. Some of the best animated cutscenes though...
Also, Quina kind of killed the character roster for me. Most ridiculous character in any FF ever. Could never get that one....
Overall, I think your best choice between the two is probably IX, since it'll obviously have better graphics, so it'll hold up better. The intro to that game was pretty awesome too.
Of personal preference, though, I found VIII to be better... but I liked that one better then VII as well.
Of course... you could just... you know... get them both.

Git this 2 weeks ago being in the UK :P
I didn't get to play it first time around since my third PS1 decided to break and I never bothered to replace it, next console I had was the original Xbox, although I still had (and have) my Saturn. I went back to my Mega Drive (until the Xbox)

Yes! I'm in the category 'that didn't get to play it because he had a n64' (which I don't regret!) so I can't wait to play this. I also got 7 and 8 for the same reason and loved those (well, 8 not so much, but still enjoyed the story)

Was never one of my super favorites (I'm a FF7 diehard), but for sure underrated, and a great deal at $10 like the other FF games.

FF III was pretty sweet as well. Tactics kicked off a whole new genre of yumminess which I think Disgaea is certainly king at this point.

@Grey. Wait... lol whatever, it's going to take some getting used to.
I felt there was more to do at game's end in VIII in comparison to IX. More than one strong secret boss, IX's Ozma compared to Bahamut, Gigantuar and King Tonberry, and Ultima and Omega Weapon.
Plus gaining more GF's and items and searching for the Ragnarok. But hey. That;s jsut what I remember.

How are the loading times for this game? FFVIII was completely ruined for me because of the long load times.
Also, can I skip the summons (are there summons?) or do I have to wait like in FFVIII?

@(Unverified) In FF IX newly acquired summons perform their artistic damage to the fullest initially then only again once in a while. Most of the time it's a shortened version.

@(Unverified) Based on the disc version, the load times were pretty much non-existent from what I recall. Also, Final Fantasy IX was the first one to start doing "abbreviated" summoning sequences. Your first time summoning them will always be the long version. After that, it has a chance to be either the long version or a shortened version.

How about how the story progresses? Are we talking open world from the start much like FFVI? Or FFVIII where you have a main "base" and do missions?
Sorry for asking too many dumb questions. Just felt completely dissapointed with FFVIII, and don't want to get burned again.

It doesn't matter how much IX cost, its only 1 of 2 games I'll happily pay any amount for. The other being Chrono Cross of course.
