Keyboards a totally underrated. I'm glad there will be fewer Rock Band songs where you play a completely different instrument during the guitar section.

Now where's the Radiohead?

Log out and log back in to change "(unverified)" to whatever you want. (can only be done once)

As far as changing your avatar, I can't seem to do it either.

You seem to have worked out changing your name.
To change your avatar just go to your profile page and change it there.
You get there by using the button above the comment form or by clicking on your name in the top bar.

@kenny goo While screenshots aren't too great, the background and characters look pretty great to me in the video. However, I do agree that the new note highways and notes look a little more plastic.

Man, the integration with MIDI looks really interesting. Imagine having a decent electronic drum kit and being able to calibrate it to Rock Band. That would be the ultimate way to learn.

@looksideways the MIDI announcement just made me seriously excited. I've never had any musical ability, but bought some roland v-drums about a year ago after playing the rock band drums since 1 came out, and now I can play about 95% of the songs along with rockband, on my drums, transcoding the colors to the real drums. This new game is just going to take out the guess work for me!

@looksideways Not that RB3 doesn't look like it's going to kick ass, but GH:WT drums have MIDI in, and even before that people (myself included) were using MIDI to signal converters to build their own controller interfaces.

@looksideways I've been doing that since Rock Band 2 times. There's been already a few ways to plug in your real MIDI drums to Rock Band on the PS3 and the Wii.

ok, the keyboard stuff actually sounds pretty cool, although I don't see how "pro" mode or "expert" or whatever is going to be 1:1 in terms of notes when the peripheral only covers 2 octaves.

also, I really don't understand the "pro" guitars. I play music games for a sense of enjoyment and a quick thrill - I can "master" complicated songs quickly, and I play a real guitar (or a real piano) when I want to dedicate serious time to a piece. A controller with 120 buttons sounds awful. At that point, just play a real guitar. Also, how are they going to change the note track to make that work?

@TheyDidItFirst

I agree that if you're going to spend the time to learn a song on Pro mode, you'd probably be better off playing on a real instrument. However, I think playing in Rock Band is exciting because it offers the opportunity to play in a band setting, in lieu of real bandmates.

@TheyDidItFirst What about the people that would like to learn to play guitar for real, but have no clue where to start? Easy mode on Rock Band Pro seems like an easy way to start, and on real songs to boot. Imagine coming out of playing Rock Band playing the songs on your own for real! For those of us that aren't 'professional' musicians, it might seem like a good deal.

Part of me feels like they did this just to shut up the people who say you just go out and play in a real band (these people are obviously idiots). In the pro-mode you're no longer just playing with toy guitars, you're actually using six strings and a load of frets, but at the same time this nullifies the whole point of the game and that's to give people who have no musical ability at all the chance to feel like they're playing instruments. while it looks like it might be a gateway for people to learn real guitar and other instruments it's going to be way to complex for most non musically minded people because of the mind splitting ramp up in difficulty.

Keyboard goes from 5 buttons to potentially 17 keys! Guitar goes from five frets and one string to six strings and more than a dozen frets! you're looking at more than a 3x ramp up in difficulty and that's not even counting cords with multiple notes! I dont think even the people who play these games competitively will be walking through the park on normal difficulty in promode unless they already know music and how to play the songs.

@Beatz I think the important thing to keep in mind is that its GH 6 vs RB3 ... 6 guitar hero releases to rb's 3.

Also, as an aside, i like how all the old jokes about the next guitar hero/rock band is going to be real instuments, whats next Roadie Hero?

@(Unverified) So far it doesn't sound like a regular guitar will work. The Squier sounds like it has special sensors in the neck and bridge area to pick up on what exactly you're fretting and strumming, and the Mad Catz guitar just has a ton of buttons. I'm bummed because I'd love to play along in pro mode on my real guitar and I really don't want to go out and buy another, crappier guitar that will work with RB3's pro mode, but I guess we'll see what options are available before too long.

Also it provides additional motivation and gratification to "learning" purely because of the game setting its in. I'm sure that learning the pro mode is going to be more fun than looking at a book of sheet music

and this is the thing with these music games that have always turned me off... the fact that they couldn't really translate learned skill from GH or RB onto a real instrument. I have always seen these guys as party games, and any time invested by someone playing on their own 'perfecting' their run on Expert should be spent learning a real instrument.

Now allowing the possibility of ANY MIDI instruments, like the keyboards 1:1 and drums into the RB arena to be controllers is damn exciting. Imagine primary school, where in music class you break kids off into groups and make them jam on real instruments in RB over a fortnight only to have them 'battle against each other in a classroom assessment. They have fun, but at the same time learn foundations of musicianship. In your case, using a real (virtual) drum set could be accurately translated into musicianship learned (mind you the drums are easily the most accurately translatable instruments as it is). Music + technology = greatness.

But, but... Guitar Hero has monsters!

On-topic: I really hope they've improved the cymbals from the previously released add-ons. I bought them for my BR2 kit, and they were loud as all hell. I took them off and threw them in my closet after a few weeks.

Other than that, everything looks absolutely amazing, and I can't wait for info next week.

I think the note highways look like complete crap. Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero 5 (to a lesser extent) had really great, clean interfaces. As far as the actual band members and graphics are concerned, I think they tried to take on an art style that's just not working. It's almost as bad as the old Guitar Hero characters. Not to mention the animations are terrible. Just look at the drummer. This game has completely fallen into the uncanny valley.

Is it the end of the world? No. What's important is the music and the gameplay, but it's still a tad disappointing at what a step back this is in my opinion.
