That may be the simplest explanation as to how a voice actor found the correct voice for a character that I've ever heard.

And yet, there isn't really anything wrong with that...

Okay, the Mario voice is definitely iconic, but I find it funny that he is an Italian stereotype that has yet to do anything that is stereotypical. Has Mario even held a plunger or done a plumbing job in any of the games?

Oh, and Wario's voice totally should have been the opposite extreme. Imagine Wario's dialog if he was the Italian mob boss stereotype...

@Lerkero

Yes, and sort of.

In Yoshi's Cookie for the SNES Mario makes a plunging action with what looks like a plunger.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbnMlDsbsvs

In that scene Yoshi is holding the more plunger like object, but still...

Also, the movie itself had him as a plumber.

You ever played Mario Bros? You're job was to specifically flush crabs and turtles out of underground pipes. It was where the pipes and koopa troopa characters scattered throughout Super Mario Bros originated from.

Not to be THAT guy who says this isn't news, but I feel like I've been hearing this same exact interview with Charles Martinet for years. I can't tell you how many times I've heard that explanation... I thought this was common knowledge at this point. Once again, sorry for being that guy... I'm sure it's new to some of you.

I know he can't really come up with a new story... my point was that the interviewers keep asking him a question that he's answered many, many times. I'd be interested in hearing some more about all of the other Nintendo characters' voices he does.

I've seen so many videos of this guy and it always strikes me how high he voices Mario. I think they reduce it somewhat for the games, it sounds much deeper than this in Galaxy 2.

On a side note, what the hell is with Yoshi being so high-pitched in Galaxy 2? Even in Mario Kart Wii he wasn't that high!

Wow, that reply didn't even work a little bit. I know I clicked TheMainProtagonist too because Joystiq automatically added @TheMainProtagonist to the textbox. Looks like there are a few bugs to be worked out...

To clarify, that was supposed to be @TheMainProtagonist. The new comment system, although set up like Engadget's, is not nearly as bug-free.

Oh, good, now it posted my explanation that I thought it had deleted in an even more wrong spot. I'm gunna stop spamming the comments with my explanations now, but hopefully some one at Joystiq takes notice. Replying to a reply clearly isn't working.

I bet Charles Martinet would be really annoying to know in real life. I can imagine him doing the Mario voice all the time.

I just wish his voice would have stayed the same over the years. Mario went from having a moderately high voice (in 64) to sounding like a castrato being poked by a white hot cattle prod (in SMG and SMG2).
