Charles Martinet explains the evolution of Mario's voice

Charles Martinet may have the happiest job in the world: being the voice of Nintendo icon Mario. How did the actor find his voice, though? Asylum chatted with Martinet and discovered the surprisingly gruff origins behind the voice.

That may be the simplest explanation as to how a voice actor found the correct voice for a character that I've ever heard.
And yet, there isn't really anything wrong with that...

Okay, the Mario voice is definitely iconic, but I find it funny that he is an Italian stereotype that has yet to do anything that is stereotypical. Has Mario even held a plunger or done a plumbing job in any of the games?
Oh, and Wario's voice totally should have been the opposite extreme. Imagine Wario's dialog if he was the Italian mob boss stereotype...

Yes, and sort of.
In Yoshi's Cookie for the SNES Mario makes a plunging action with what looks like a plunger.

In that scene Yoshi is holding the more plunger like object, but still...
Also, the movie itself had him as a plumber.

@Lerkero In Mario and Luigi you have to do some plumbing puzzles

Not to be THAT guy who says this isn't news, but I feel like I've been hearing this same exact interview with Charles Martinet for years. I can't tell you how many times I've heard that explanation... I thought this was common knowledge at this point. Once again, sorry for being that guy... I'm sure it's new to some of you.

Ah Mario, I want his bit of making spaghetti to be my alarm clock.
Waking up to Mario telling me to go get spaghetti...my dreams will have finally come true.

I love this guy. The voice he gave to Mario was so perfect.

He must be tired of repeating that same story for over 12 years.

I've seen so many videos of this guy and it always strikes me how high he voices Mario. I think they reduce it somewhat for the games, it sounds much deeper than this in Galaxy 2.
On a side note, what the hell is with Yoshi being so high-pitched in Galaxy 2? Even in Mario Kart Wii he wasn't that high!

I bet Charles Martinet would be really annoying to know in real life. I can imagine him doing the Mario voice all the time.

Martinet is the man, the host on the other hand is a douche.

I just wish his voice would have stayed the same over the years. Mario went from having a moderately high voice (in 64) to sounding like a castrato being poked by a white hot cattle prod (in SMG and SMG2).

I prefer the voice of Captain Lou Albano over his.
